It's not. I finally got to see it in person ... and it's absolutely awful. It's okay on the phone (though I hate it on the phone too). It is an absolute eyesore on the laptop. But that's my personal thoughts. I absolutely hate it.
Looking at it in the store for a few minutes and using it for months is very different… it’s really not all that bad.

The good thing about the notch on the MBP is that it can be hidden easily by choice of wallpaper. I tend to run dark wallpaper, so it disappears.

When do people stop staring at their laptop notch and actually just start using it?
Very few people need to show themselves to others during online gabbling ;) More people need to work seriously and not to have the upper basic menu and screen in various programmes cut and reduced by some ugly black strip. In case of upper menu you can't put all the things there you would normally need - so it seriously limits you - for very useless and superficial reason. In case of many professional applications you can't view their full menu - some parts are missing. So really great! As I said, it should have been a part of some MacBook Social and not of MacBook Pro. I am sure it will disappear in the same way as that infamous touchbar. But not in the machines we already bought ...

In light of the Continuity Camera feature coming to macOS Ventura this fall, could Apple be trial ballooning ditching the built-in webcam on MacBooks in the future? If your iPhone's camera is obviously of better quality, why fuss with adding a built-in inferior webcam that creates a notch? Apple could move the ambient light & True Tone sensors somewhere else or perhaps they will fit on top of the display where they are now without necessitating a notch.

I understand the convenience of having a built-in webcam & the convenience of not having your phone tied up as a camera. What do you think?

The "future of the notch" ??

It will be there as long as necessary, and until the Apple designers can come up with another way to have both the camera on top and a "small bezel", too.

IMO, the notch was pre-emptively introduced to accommodate for when Apple does figure out how to fit FaceID within the top lid of the MacBook. They probably can make the bezels super thin all the way around while accommodating the camera as is right now, but they don't want to do that to then introduce the notch later when FaceID demands it. In that scenario, it would be a clear step back in design so they're ripping off that band-aid early.

Consequently, it will probably be quite a while before we see the notch go honestly. There is no telling when, but I think we gotta see FaceID in Macs before we can even begin this conversation.

I know this may sound crazy, but... I wouldn't be at all surprised if Apple ditched FaceTime cameras on MacBooks within the next 5 years.

In Ventura we have the continuity camera feature for video calls, which is supported by a range of services (not just FaceTime). Assuming most Mac owners also own an iPhone, there really can't be many advantages to having a worse camera built into the display, taking up the space of the 'notch', when the iPhone camera is superior.
