Ah, so that's what "Heading Up" means. Man, looks nice, but what's with the super-slow frame-rate? You'd almost think it was streaming the data off the internet.

This demo doesn't do the app justice when it comes to the frame rates, there actually pretty good and are not as jumpy as the demo might suggest. It's actually pretty smooth.

I just recently took a trip to Florida from North Carolina using this app and I was pleasantly surprised on how well it worked. At first I was disappointed by the fact it did not have voice turn by turn, but I found that it did not hinder the use at all. It has a directional for the next turn indicating miles till turn which is pretty accurate. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to magnify this directional when tapped, for greater visibility. I also read that the next update this month will add an alert in lieu of voice turn by turn.

The only thing needed now is the ability to review the route prior to execution. Without this you’re really relying on the apps to route you the best way possible without a quick list view of the route. Yes you can review your route on the map by panning and zooming in at the turn, but a quick list view would be more practical.

With my limited use of it, I feel that it's a really good app and waaaay better better than Maps. My only real concerns are....

1. It seems to get "stuck" at times and not update my position. I was using it last night as a driver was bringing me back from the airport and going through downtown SF. Even though we weren't driving through tall building, it did seem to just stop updating my position a few times and didn't come back. I tried to restart the route just short of the Golden Gate Bridge and it couldn't find me.

2. You do have to make a few setting changes on your phone before starting it like setting the backlight to "always on" and possibly turning off the fetch mail as well. I noticed that I got mail on my phone around the time that it lost my position last night. That might have something to do with it ..... has that been an issue with anyone else? Also, what's the deal with edge vs 3G using this app? It seems to work fine on on edge, but is there a improvement in reliability if 3G is always on?

I wonder if some of the apps problems/limitations are due to the gps chip in the phone. My Nuvi never has a problem with tall buildings.

I'm contemplating buying G-Maps, or possibly waiting for the next update. Also I'm surprised that Tom Tom hasn't released theirs now that G-Maps are out.

This app seems to be currently unavailable on the app store. Does anybody happen know anything about that?

And here is your answer.

Hmmm. I wonder if it's really being pulled for "improvement" or to remove a feature Apple wasn't happy about? Since when are apps removed from the App Store for "improvements"? What about just offering an update like ever other app?

Yeah, something smells fishy.

Yeah, I don't want to speculate too much, but I actually had another reason for bringing it up. A couple of weeks ago, I sent an email to the developer's support address, and somebody there with the title 'Director North American Office' emailed me back with his phone number and asked me to call him. I tried him a few times and got the message 'this number has been changed, disconnected, or is no longer in use'. I emailed him back to make sure he sent the correct number, and have had no response back from him. It may be nothing, just seems curious that it happened at the same time their app disappeared from the app store.
