I know that there are close to 78 threads on macbook memory. Forgive me for having to start 79. Please keep reading though. Thanks. :p

I have noticed (as many people have pointed out) that newegg. com is selling g skill ram for $79/ 1gb memory stick. All of the reviews on newegg.com look to be positive but I have read on these threads a few negative things about g. skill.

I am trying to decide between the cheaper g. skill 2 gb ($160) or the http://www.datamem.com or OWC. The later two cost about $50 more. Is there really a difference. For some reason I would feel better spending more on the more expensive ram. Is it a false sense of security. They both seem to be good ram. Will OWC or datamem last longer than g. skill?

I'm just surprised by the large price difference if they are practically the same thing. Alright thanks for the help and I'm sorry for having to post another thread like this.
 
You know, it is hard to say what to get at all times, unless everyone is saying the RAM sucks.

All I say is get the cheapest memory with the longest warranty (aim for lifetime). And be happy.
 
I bought the g. skill ram from new egg and it works great. My MB with 2 gigs of rams absolutely flies! I ran a few memory tests and everything came out great.

bought a gig of g.skill (1.25 total)

seems to work great!

And I'd avoid Crucial and their unsavory business practices like the plague...

I trust OWC and Datamem for my purchases. I too have heard complaints about G.Skill RAM. Personally, I feel more at ease buying from OWC or Datamem, so that's worth the extra cash for me.

If you're really on a budget, cheaper RAM may be a good option for you. As others have said, try to stick to ones with lifetime warranties. Lifetime advance warranties are best...they'll send out a replacement as soon as you notify them, eliminating the need to wait for your bad RAM to make it back to their store before they ship out the replacement.
 
Does the G. Skill have a lifetime warranty? I can't find that. I just noticed the G. Skill has an additional $5 off today. Save an extra 10 bucks on 2 gbs. But does it have the lifetime warranty?
 
I bought a Gig of the Corsair from Newegg a week ago and it is great (1.25gb total). It showed up as 667mhz when I first booted with no trouble at all

If you click on the "Return Policy" tab, you'll see that it has a lifetime warranty. In fact, all G.Skill RAM has a lifetime warranty. (I don't think it's an advance warranty, but that's not a huge deal.)

Note that the warranty is with G.Skill, not NewEgg, so you'd have to contact G.Skill if you have any problems. I know that that's standard operating procedure for just about any item you buy, but another I like about OWC and DMS is that it's their own RAM their selling, so they're responsible for everything.

The G.Skill sounds like a good deal, especially today. Might be worth jumping on it.

With a lifetime warranty and so many people talking about how they don't have a single problem it makes it difficult to spend 215 for the OWC or DMS compared to the 150 for the G. Skill. I just know that I would be the person to get the DOA set. Your right, today seems like a better day than any......I might do this unless someone can give me a really good reason why G. Skill is horrible.

could you give a link to the RAM that you might be getting?

also, is 5300 or 5400 better?
 
I really would love to know the difference between 5300 and 5400. Or if someone could just tell me which one is better and why.....thanks.



P.S. I'm impatient.
 
I believe that 5400 RAM is capable of running at a slightly faster speed (675 MHz as opposed to 667 MHz for the 5300), but your Mac will run either one at 667 MHz, so it probably doesn't matter.

Well if that is the case I will go with the cheaper one which happens to be the one that might run faster. I guess I'm gonna do this. Seems like a good price. Now to find out if it will work on my mini.....
 
I purchased 2 gb of the 5400 for a total of $153.00 shipped to my house. Great price and the reviews I have read seem great as well. I will let everyone know how it turns out.
 
I've got a gig stick of G. Skill in my iMac and it has worked fine for the month or so that I've had it. No complaints whatsoever. I bought it from NewEgg.com as well.
 
You said you were thinking of buying a 2 gig stick? All of the Intel Apple laptops do not support a 2 gig stick. You have to have 1 gig on each channel or less. I am pretty sure there was a thread on that before or a news article on it.

He meant 2 x 1 GB.
 
I'm assuming the 5400 will work as well as the 5300 with the possibility of going a little faster. Should I get the 5400 instead of the 5300?

Since Macs do not support overclocking it won't bring you any benefit, but neither will it do any harm either. The faster rams will simply clock at a slower speed in line with the rest of the computer.

Thanks. As long as it won't hurt anything then I'm good to go. Now I just need to find a sleeve, screen protector, and stain remover.....;)
