Yep. My first iPhone 4 had a slightly angled power button that did not rattle or move at all, and had a horrendous rattle in the camera (that was definitely defective), but my second one has a completely flat power button that has a tiny amount of side-to-side play in it. It doesn't rattle or anything but it's not as rock solid as the first one's power button.

Every phone is going to be very marginally different. The black that they use to dye the bezel on Tuesday might have been mixed by a newbie and so might end up a little bit more gray. There is way too much that goes into the production of things like this to freak out over marginal differences between them.

You do realize that the dye is most likely not done by actual people, and is most likely done by machines.

Yes, the actual application process is probably done by machines, but I'm sure a human has a job that involves some point in the process of creating or applying the dye that can introduce variations.

Hold your horses... Photos are about to be posted, just gotta pull them off my camera.

Okay guys, well, I have a semi-epic fail going on here. The proximity sensor is indeed visible, but once I got both phones into the sunlight, I saw that *both* phones have a visible proximity sensor. /hangs_head_in_shame

*However*, both phones are actually replacements. The "older" one was an in-store replacement from yesterday, and the "newer" one was a replacement mailed to me directly from Apple.

The serial numbers are:

84027****** (older, in-store)
86027****** (mailed)

I encourage anyone whose proximity sensor isn't visible to get it in direct sunlight and look again. Please post photos here if it still isn't visible.

As for the antenna bands, they look identical.

Pictures to follow very soon...

Honestly, at this point I would say that everyone's prox. sensor is probably visible. I still argue that the newer replacement I have had a "more visible" prox. sensor under household light. The problem there is I had a nearly impossible time taking photos of the phone under household light because of glare/reflection. I really couldn't see the sensor at all on the older phone until I got it into sunlight.

I also apologize that the pictures aren't better... If you've never tried to photograph the iPhone 4 (as an amateur), give it a shot. It's actually amazingly hard to get good pictures without glare or reflections.

Both are Week 27 phones. Any difference between them is probably a result of them coming from different factories.

Additionally, all phones being given out as replacements are still new, un-refurbished phones. Apple hasn't had time to refurbish any phones yet - I'm guessing it will be at least one or two months before we start seeing refurbished phones going out as replacement units.

So, based on the serials, they were made the same week, but at differnt factory lines, so it is very possible that the different lines account for any differences.

Amount of time it took you to write that and get the actual pictures you could of gotten another replacement phone from apple..

LOL!

Be nice. He got a little too excited here, at least he's admitting it and not just disappearing.

Aww, thanks ;)

Admittedly I deserve it guys. Honestly I'm not an idiot. Impulsive, maybe?

Seriously though, at this point I'm just curious whether anyone's proximity sensor is not visible, or if they all are.

This.

Sometimes buttons are looser or tighter, plastics and materials feel slightly different. They are producing an insane volume of these things, they all won't be identical.

Some would say the same about a woman and her vibrator. :)

You should apply for a Gizmodo reporter position, I am sure they have a great use for you.

The photo doesn't tell anything.

Put the phones side by side, on a flat surface, reflecting the same background, and we'll see.

If anything...the prox sensor on the right phone is a smidge more visible

One phone is reflecting shadow, the other phone is not.
