Not to mention incredibly toxic. The chemical fumes exhausted out of the solder lead, PCB fiberglass, and other circuitry materials is not only a weak solution for the board, but also dangerous to the human. And if you've had the misfortune of having done that in the kitchen oven (where dinner is made), forget about it!
I can't believe this method gained the ground it did in the enthusiast community. It comes at great cost.
Melting point of rosin-flux is at about 100-120°C. The boiling point is much higher, but below the melting point of solder, which is at temperatures higher than 220°C.
So fumes coming from boiling flux (which then may carry toxic metal oxides) are not present, if heating is at about 140-150°C or below, which might be (applied for 10 minutes onto a board) a
temporary but
repeatable cure for *some* faulty GPUs.
BTW 150°C is also the pre-heating temperature prior to real soldering-procedures.
Maybe the fix is caused by rosin-flux getting fluid again and curing some oxidation? Actually, what's happening is in a black box. But it's certainly not a matter of "reflowing" something, while "reflowing" solder needs the high temperatures beyond melting point of solder, and since all solder and flux will be affected, that might damage the mainboard and set off toxic fumes.
After doing some research, I don't believe applying max. 150°C over 10 min will do any harm by toxic fumes and I see no point in banning discussion about this, only because bad people use this fix to cheat others prior of selling their computer ...
I have seen a few logic-boards that look like having been victim of uncontrolled overheating by heat-gun or "the oven", where melting-point of flux was exceeded, plastic was harmed and probably toxic fumes were set free.
One cannot get rid of those misleading videos, where heat-gunners shoot at innocent mainboards, but only prevent people from uncontrolled heating up stuff above 140-150°C. Or prevent people fall for stupid offers, where "reballing" or "reflowing" of a faulty GPU is advertised, while replacing the faulty GPU is the only permanent cure.
So once there's a faulty GPU and fear of toxic fumes, the only solution is to dump the unit or give into trustworthy professional hands in order to replace the GPU with a non-faulty successor.
