It isn't necessarily a good thing to have a super good monitor for graphics work. What you see on your screen is totally unrepresentative of what the end user will see. I'm not saying buy a crap screen, but spending $700 on an Apple display won't help you much. Argue with me all you want, that's fine, I don't honestly care, because I figure you will. I know plenty of graphic artists, and they were the ones that convinced me of what I said above.

" Argue with me all you want, that's fine, I don't honestly care, because I figure you will."

WTF?

Where the F have I argued with you? I'd prefer an older monitor to one of the cheap 1080's my opinion completely. But IMHO I find higher pixel density to be a good thing when sitting close to a monitor. I think EVERYONE should use their own judgement, preferably after testing out some gear in real life scenarios. I'd often choose a pair of old 1050 Dell WPF 20" over a lot of the cheap 1080s, but again, my opinion.

EDIT: I wouldn't buy an Apple monitor in any case, they are now just laptop extensions an not adjustable enough for my tastes.

Calm down already. No need for even implied language like that. I posted that preemptively because most folks here jump all over anyone who disagrees with them.

Ahhh, ok, I didn't realize you were just being a douchebag in case someone was an ass, that makes all the difference. No problem then. =)

Do you think they will ever make external thunderbolt graphics cards that you could plug into a imac or mac mini ? That would really make a lot of pros happy in my opinion , The thunderbolt I hear is as fast or faster than using one internally . I don't know just a thought I guess .

Sony's Vaio Z laptop has had one for a while now, so there's nothing technically impossible about it. Someone just needs to build one, but judging by how poorly Macs have traditionally been served in the graphics card department, I'd say don't hold your breath.

Hello.
About two years ago I have purchased an early 2008 Mac Pro with 4GB of RAM.
Right now I have (it's expensive FB DIMM) 16GB.
It's a dual quad 3.0 or 3.2
I have upgraded the HD from the factory drive to 128GB SSD for OS, apps, and have a 1TB WD black for apps, itunes library, iphoto library, etc.

I could not be happier with this box.
It's running 10.6 and while I have purchased 10.7, 10.6 suits my needs.
I can run several fusion virtual machines at the same time.

I purchased the tower used from one of the online refurb stores.
Running geekbench vs my mid 2012 quad with 3GB ram, factory ssd I have at work my home machine scores better on some tests.

Now for the OP, perhaps get a used Mac Mini intel based. The ones with dual video output are much faster than previous ones. See if that suits you well.
Before my Mac Pro I had a Mac Mini I purchased as a refurb from Apple (and it had same warranty as new, looked the same, etc btw). I installed a SSD in that and it was wicked fast to boot, I think 19 seconds to the desktop.

Here is my suggestion:
1. Purchase a used Mac Mini from craigslist
2. Sell the G5 power supply on ebay
3. Sell the G5 memory on ebay
4. Sell the G5 case on craigslist (some people who have a hackintosh want the look too), G5 case looks very similar to a Mac Pro on the outside.

With the sale of the items you should be able to get back about $150
