The main reason for this is that a whole load of new stuff was introduced in 10.3.x that is largely invisible to users but makes dev's lives a lot easier. The same is true with 10.4 though to a lesser extent.
Yeah, I know. I can site examples things like that going all the way back to NEXTSTEP 2.0.

Sadly I can think of a few cases where underlying structures were lost during OS upgrades.

But the reason why wasn't as much the issue as noting the fact that developers move on just like the OS does. And hardware ends up being dropped from OS support

On the subject of the Omni Group, it should be noted that OmniWeb 5.1 runs nicely in Mac OS X 10.2.8... which is note worthy in that OmniWeb uses it's own version of Web Core rather than the one provided by Safari. Apple expects you to upgrade your OS to get an up-to-date version of Safari (which can also mean needing to upgrade hardware and software at the same time), but I was able to get a more up-to-date browser based on Web Core thanks to the Omni Group.

The Omni Group has always been good about watching out for users of older systems. When they were writing OmniWeb 3 for Rhapsody, they still made a version of OmniWeb 3 for OPENSTEP. Granted, it couldn't take advantage of font rendering improvements the Rhapsody version could, or run Java scripts. But those were short comings of OPENSTEP and not OmniWeb.

And I totally understood why they never made a version of OmniWeb 4.0 for Rhapsody... it was only sold to the public as a server platform, and there weren't many users. Still, they seem to be watching out for those of us running a little behind the times. :D

i just sold my dual g5 the other day and i'm kind of regretting it already. reminds me of when BeOS switched from PPC to Intel and all the developers quickly jumped ship and abandoned the PPC. i know Apple says they will support PPC for a while but i think once more ways become available for the developers to optimize for Intel then they'll be getting more excited about that. the fate of a G5 system lies more in the hands of the developers than Apple i'd say. still, the Quads and duals are very powerful machines and if you need to get some work done well, then you need to get some work done. as i said, i miss mine already.
