I didn't know you lived in Austin!

I went to Anderson High School. I went to St. Andrews Episcopal Elementary.

I never liked my Elementary school, mainly because it was really snobbish, but check out what they did:

They gave a 3 million dollar donation back because the donor didn't support a gay themed book, I'm so proud of Lucy Nazro, the principal, even though I didn't particularly enjoy my time there.

Technically Round Rock. Went to McNeil High School, so it must not be where I know you from, unless you were in ROTC, and I might have met you at a competition. Just can't shake the feeling that I know you from somehwere...maybe I'm just crazy.

Messing with chemical levels in your brain is tricky stuff. An old friend of mine got into some hard drugs and that temporarily unbalanced his brain, his parents got him help via western doctors who prescribed drugs which just messed him up even more. So he goes back, what do they do? Prescribe more pills...

Western medicine often reminds me of Microsoft, the product is flawed so they patch it. But that patch causes bug x, so they patch again, but that causes problem y, so they patch again. It's just not a good way to handle problems.

Alternatives

I am pro-alternative medicine (which probably includes but is not exclusive to physical therapy and diet change, things like Eastern medicinal practices/acupuncture). I actually considered acupuncture as a career for a very short time :p.

I've been blessed with very good health, I'm planning on maintaining a decent diet and exercise plan to keep it. :)_Emerson
I find your interest in acupuncture and TCM to be the way of the future. My nephew, who I mentioned to you, his Martial Arts master is both a traditional chinese medicine specialist and a western doctor. He's been training Jon in all these areas for years.

Leaving the size of your mouth apart, I think you've got your head screwed (on right) in this regard.

hmmmm... I can't imagine where you'd see me around. Maybe a martial arts class? I've been in and out of various kung fu and wushu classes my whole life.

That's awesome. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to an acupuncturist and learning a bit about the theory behind it and how it ties into the science of the body before I went to China. I don't know if I've talked about it, but I won a scholarship trip to China through Kalamazoo College in Michigan between my Junior and Senior year of high school. Before going to China, we went to Kalamazo and learned about Chinese culture, calligraphy, medicinal practices, language, etc.

Program information:

This is a demanding course of learning. Students will study one aspect of Asia, to be determined by the course instructor each year. Topics may include the people, art, language, culture, history, religion, or literature of the region. Students will study about Asia with Kalamazoo College faculty, staff, and students. The course begins on campus and continues with two weeks in East or Southeast Asia.

Who is eligible:

We invite high school students who are currently sophomores and juniors to apply for the program. No experience abroad is necessary. The Freeman Foundation grant covers all room, board, and travel expenses on-campus and in Asia, with the exception of a $500 participation fee, travel costs to and from Kalamazoo College, and incidental expenses as noted in the program description.

That was from the website.

Anyways, I went to China, and I learned more about life, culture, and this silly little world that we live in in 3 weeks than I learned all year long in high school.

BTW- isn't there a way to use your F keys without using the Function key? My iBook's F9 and F10 control Expose without it, so I can't imagine you can't get that on your PB.

Talk about a delayed response, but:

yeah, here is a way to reverse the keys and have the hardware function of the f-keys only work when you hold the function key and the software functions (including expose) work with no key pressed. I don't know if that sentence made any sense.

But then I'd have to press the function key to increase the volume etc, which would drive me just as nuts as having to press it for expose. Oh well :(.

No Emo, I hadn't realised you'd been to China. That's freaking awesome. I have somewhere a number of large acupuncture charts that Jon gave me. They are all in Chinese of course. I was planning on having them framed and hanging them as a conversation piece / art. They are quite a prized possession.

Hey, I just noticed, I'd picked up post #3,000. Go guys, go.

Nice :), grats on 3k everyone.

Some of my most valuable possessions are my scroll posters I got in China. They are cheap and not handmade, they are available from just about any street vendor. They are still important to me though, they kind of represent what you see in China, and they are pretty :). I got some authentic Chinese art too, but I gave all of it away .

I think the style of Asian art is my favourite. Apart from the acupuncture charts, I do have an authentic chinese scroll, depicts a chinese fable. Now that the family's all back from Thailand, I'll be out there tomorrow to see what they've brought me back. I'd asked for Thai art, so we shall see. The next printer I buy will have to have an extensive panoramic feature, then I'll be able to replicate some of my earlier works in that format. Huh, oh yeah but vertically.

Well, Guys, as I've been at my computer desk for 12 hours straight (and that's the only thing 'straight') I should sign off for a while, and Emerson, it's gone 2am for you. Shouldn't you be abed?

Arrgghh, you've made me sooooo jealous, I've turned that unattractive shade of green again. At least I can honestly say, I can't imagine a guy who would get more from a china trip than you Buddy.

Love the scrolls em, especially the calligraphic one. I've always found chinese calligraphy to be very beautiful and expressive.

I was quite into Arabic calligraphy when i was younger and was actually quite good at it. Also very expressive and beautiful. I should really get the reed pens out and get back into practice. :)

I use Expose far more often than I change the volume...
I worked out a good level for general sound and left it there. I occasionally change it via the screen using my trackpad and icon... and via VLC which is the app I u se alot - I use shortcut keys... Apple + Up or Down arrows increase and decrease volume in VLC.

music (iTunes) is via AirTunes -> Airport Express to my home theatre system so I use that remote... but expose I use heaps!

Go the expose option!

There was actually a thread on this and the consensus was to use the hot corners feature. I have the bottom left corner for all windows, and the bottom right corner for app windows.

Good morning cutie. :) So- it seems the keyboards are different betteen the iBook and the PB. My volume is controlled with the F4 and F5 keys. Wonder why they did that?

Morning! Volume is f4 and f5 for me too :).

If I switched to software before hardware then I'd have to press fn to increase the volume, and if I put hardware before software I'd have to press fn to do the 'all windows' and 'application windows' expose thingy. It's one or the other, and I'd rather have volume controls.

But I think I got it all sorted out. I use the screen corners for expose now, which works fine. :)

OK-now I'm really confused. Currently, my F4 and F5 control the volume AND my F9 F10 and F11 control expose. This is on the same setting. I don't use the function key for either.

Cause my f9 and f10 control the brightness of my keyboard illumination, which isn't available for iBooks, so those keys don't have hardware functions on your computer.

Ugh, I accidently fell asleep last night, so my schedule is still normal. That means I might get tired at Splash tonight :( and I'll definitely be sleepy in class on Friday. If it's anything like it's been the past couple weeks I'm going to leave within an hour anyways, though (from Splash, not class :p).

Emerson, Are you using external speakers with your new Powerbook? If you are you could get the Griffin 'PowerMate' and control the volume that way. If you're taking to watching your dvd (Crouching Tiger) while in your bed, You'd be able to twiddle your knob to your heart's content.

Sure, if you like winter in October. :) I'm in Oslo and it's not that bad here, this low temp and snowfall is only temporary. It should be back at 15 degrees C by this weekend. dubbz, who is in Alta, Norway has been reporting snow for several weeks now.

Nah, I don't have a PowerMate, or a Mate for that matter, so I have no knobs to twiddle.

Yep, nothing like a quick bang !!! Ah well, you'll find that the Powerbook speakers to be lacking and go to external speakers and a PowerMate before too long. That's when having your knob external too, will be de rigueur. Just keep your rooms at an acceptable temperature for your creature comforts. That's not the 'creature' externals, the're just butt ugly.
