Geekbench results - iMac Quad Core w/ i7

Interesting that your 10.6.2 build # is different than the build # I have on my Mac Pro. Is that normal?
 
Yes, I also noticed the different build number. It's the same on all the quad cores. Looks like 10.6.2 build 10c540 (that we all have) doesn't have full i5/i7 support yet. The quad cores shipped with custom version of mac os.

That usually happens on new hardware.

A recent example is the 09 Mac Pro which shipped with a custom build of 10.5.6. In that case it was just drivers that where not included in the original release. 10.5.7 got everyone back on the same build.
 
Nice! Can't barely wait for my i7 to arive! :D Altho, I live in Sweden, don't think us here aren't prioritised by Apple :p
My Macbook scored about 2.2-2.3k in geekbench :p A 4 times faster computer, with an awsome screen... I get wood just thinking about it :)

Could you possibly do us Mac Pro users a favor? We are trying to ascertain whether the i5/i7 iMacs have a power management issue which is affecting Mac Pros. Since the processor architecture is similar, there is a chance that it could exist on the iMac as well. Having said that, it looks like the i5 can be confirmed to not have this problem.

If your willing to help out, if you could please do the following and report back.

1) Download and install iStat Menus so you can monitor CPU Temp.

http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatmenus/

2) Close all programs except iTunes.
3) Play audio in iTunes for at least 10 mins.
4) After 10 mins of ONLY playing audio in iTunes, check the CPU temp.

Your temp should be at or near it's idle temp (30C +/-)

If your temp is closer to 50C, then that would be an indication that the Mac Pro power management bug is also affecting i7 iMacs.

I'm trying :'( But it's soooo hard to wait for this awsome machine... not that it's nothing wrong with my macbook (altho, I would like to upgrade from my 2gb of ram to 4). But after have been sitting behind this awsome laptop for a year, when I sold my pc, which is 13", I can't stop thinking how great the world would be when I finally get my big 27" computer :D Quite a big change to jump from 13" to 27" :)
I walked to a apple-reseller (MacSupport) in Lund (sweden) and couldn't take my eyes of it how beauty it was!! So jealous of you guys that got yours! :'(

Most excellent. How's your ram holding up? Are you getting close to capacity while running a lot of resource-oriented programs?

If so I wonder and indulge myself at the thought of how fast one of these i7 iMacs could be with 8 gigs of 1067 mhz memory.

I also wonder if they can accept 1333 mhz memory.


I also really can't wait to see iFixit's teardown of an i7 iMac.

Sadly, I cannot give you any more results today as my iMac and I have parted ways. I just left for work. :( Oh, the agony!!!
 
Anyone with the i7 and the 64bit version of Geekbench mind posting your results as well?

Just ran GeekBench for my i7 that got here a couple hours ago. The 32 bit version as 64 bit is not free...

Summary score is 8427

Im kinda new to this geekbench stuff but from looking at other threads these number are pretty amazing. I have an extra 4gb RAM sitting on my desk waiting for my i7. Im not even turning that sucker on until I pop the RAM in. I cant wait for this machine!

Anyway, for reference, what is a dream machine geekbench score? Like 10k+?

Why not run it with 4gb first on Geekbench, then install the 8gb and run Geekbench to see the increase in performance? Would be interesting and useful information. ;)
 
Would it be possible for some one to give a real world performance example. For instance, what framerate could we expect encoding a DVD to ipod touch format whilst using the computer for general internet browsing or using iphoto etc....

I appreciate that all those lucky people to have one delivered are being bombarded with questions but this may help create a link between benchmark scores and real world expectations.

Not a bad idea at all. I think Im going to be so excited to fire it up I might forget about the RAM anyway!
 
Some interesting things I have noticed on the prelim i7 Geekbench scores:

i5 w/ 4gb= 6496 (https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/8799531/) Just for comparison with the i7

i7 w/ 4gb= 8156 (https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/8802831/)
i7 w/ 4gb= 8352 (http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/183285)
i7 w/ 8gb= 8427 (https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/8803839/)

Any reason for the variability? I was expecting the i7 w/ 8gb to be faster than just ~75 points from the 4gb version. Unless that 8352 score for the 4gb test is not correct?
 
I'm also a bit confused by the geekbench test scores as well.

I wasn't really considering the i7 since I thought it was probably overkill and, from what I understood of the discussions before these benchtests, not all that big of a performance boost from the i5 (except the 8 virtual core bit, which didn't appeal to me since I don't run lots of programs at the same time).

However it now seems like nearly a nearly 30% boost (~6500 score for i5 to 8300 for i7). I have to admit I'm a noob at these benchmark scores myself. Will this translate to, say, 30% better performance running games? :confused:

Not sure I am doing this correctly:

6500/8300= .78 (22% decrease for the i5 compared to the i7)

or another way

8300-6500/6500 = .276 (28% increase for the i7 compared to the i5). Did I do that correctly?
