Wasn't really expecting any iPadOS specific features since rumors had it this was going to be a "Snow Leopard" kind of year for Apple... cleaning up bugs and optimizing for speed.

But kudos to @xxFoxtail for finding the persistent menu bar... currently using that now.

App icons look a bit janky on my iPad mini 7 - there's a black outline around the glyphs and there doesn't look to be any aliasing going on. Not as noticeable when you're using default but still there.

Not sure this is intended.

Yeah, and I tested it with my desktop monitor, and now the Control Center works on the desktop monitor when I click it there! So awesome! That was basically my only main complaint with extended display support! 👍🏻

I don't really take advantage of external display as much as I used to before (now that I sold the portable monitor)... but glad Apple resolved that for you.

One thing I noticed in the Files app... text are more smaller than before, I tend to use the columns view along with compact under View Options.

So did they not talk about iPadOS 27 at all today? Not even one of those graphics showing like 10 or so new features? The persistent menu bar seems to be the only new thing known right now and it’s buried in a menu.

I guess there’s all the AI and Siri stuff and some of the iOS things should transfer over like the transparency slider.

Yeah, they did talk about iPadOS 27. But they didn’t follow the conventional pattern of separate sections for each OS, because basically all the new features are cross-platform. They treated everything more like one platform, which I think makes sense as they move towards greater unification. They all share the same wallpaper even now.

But in addition to the Menu Bar thing, they also made some improvements to extended display support. So now, when I click the Control Center button on my desktop monitor, it opens Control Center on the desktop monitor. That is going to be such a nice improvement, that was basically my only nitpick about extended display support before.

There are also new photo editing features in the Photos app.

And my two favorite features so far? The custom Safari Extensions feature, and Describe Shortcut. Those are both going to be extremely useful. As will the auto-tab sorting. But I’ve already created several new shortcuts with the prompt feature, and it works very well! I created a Shortcut that creates a stage in Stage Manager with a four-way Split View of certain apps. This could be very useful for those who have a certain set of apps they often use together. And I’ve created some Safari extensions that will enhance my workflow as well.

And, of course, there’s the new Siri. I am on the waiting list to try it, and I’m super excited to get to test it out. That looks very promising for potentially revolutionizing my workflow.

There are actually a surprising number of new features. And they also seem to have made some major performance gains as well. 👍🏻

It looks like Apple now ties the Pencil's "Shadow" hover effect with the "Tool Preview" (pixel preview) hover effect. It's just not responsive enough to justify keeping the shadow visible if you write quickly.

Am I correct in understanding that the simultaneous audio and video playback is still not available in iPadOS 27?

And someone could test it – it's now available via Files: when an external SSD is connected does the [eject] (safely removing external SSD's) button work?

Its been about 18 hours here since I've upgraded on my M4 Pro. Just checked under settings and it still shows indexing. Just curious if anyone has completed indexing?

M4 Pro here... mine finished indexing, can't really say when it finished though.

If it was available... Apple surely would have featured that in WWDC.

Button doesn't work. However, not sure why this is a big deal... most SSD have a LED indicator displaying any activity among the drive. And nowadays... external storage support is pretty stable for iPadOS compared to when Apple first introduced it.

Still no real simultaneous audio in iPadOS 27 Is a joke. Because of this, my iPad will always remain a glorified media consumption device and nothing very serious otherwise.

iPadOS shares its foundational core with iOS. It is by design. HOWEVER.

The Independent Alarm Volume in OS 27 is the first step. Given that we will now have 3 individual audio source at the same time, it is the beginning of Apple providing a System-Level Audio Mixer.

It will come.

As to simultaneous audio, apparently one of the things in that wall of text they showed for other changes and improvements coming was “web audio no longer interrupts system audio”. So it looks like multiple audio sources is coming. However, I don’t think it’s in the first beta.

I tested external drives, and the eject button doesn’t appear as an option for external drives. That said, at this point, I don’t really think it’s the same that it used to be when macOS first adopted the “eject” option for external drives. Modern drives are far more stable, as is iPadOS and the way it connects to them. It’s designed for users to be able to simply unplug the drive. 👍🏻

Doubt it's coming in iPadOS 27, it would be a big deal... headline feature.

Demoed in the presentation because I believe users will need to understand how to use the feature... stock Android doesn't even have this capability, Samsung has given their users the ability to do it. However, there's steps in order to get it working since it's something not found in settings.

I think Apple should remove the eject button off of iPadOS... that way it would alleviate confusion.

Okay, but they said in that text thing that it was coming in iPadOS 27. I don’t think it’s supposed to be a fully controllable thing necessarily, just it separates web audio from system audio and doesn’t allow web audio to interrupt system audio. So not necessarily quite full simultaneous audio control, but a different approach that has the same end result when it comes to audio from things like websites interrupting music. 👍🏻

I attached a screenshot from the relevant part of the slide. 👍🏻

I know it’s not a feature, but I would have loved if Apple would have gave us multiple docks. Swipe left to each new dock.

With iPadOS, it can put the previous one to sleep so it doesn’t take up too much system RAM/resources. Swipe back and other one goes to sleep.

The auto-show dock is missing and I’m lost without it! Yeah, I know I can swipe up but I liked it before where it just showed up.
You may wish to check settings under multitasking and gestures and see if auto hid and show dock is enabled or disabled. I’ve encountered similar occasionally in this beta as well, and toggling that helped. 👍🏻

To clarify. When I say dock” I mean home screens like MacOS. When you enter expose and you click the (+) icon and you get a whole new dock screen with a new wallpaper.

Focus modes are probably what you’re looking for if I’m understanding correctly? You can set custom focus modes with custom wallpapers, Home Screens with different apps and widgets, etc.

Yeah, I peeped on Jason Snell’s Sixcolors site… but doesn’t specifically say it’s for iPadOS. Noticed they added extra large widgets support on the Today’s view… so far Music, Home, Weather, Calendar and Notes have been included.

I finally figured it out [had to deep search it].

Spaces. With MacOS we can have 16 spaces with their own individual apps windows open.

I've tested it yesterday with a YouTube video played in background with the official YouTube app and it stopped when started a video on Safari so...we'll see in the official release.
