I'm only buying cars that are CarPlay compatible. Why would I want to drive something that barely works with my iPhone?
Becasue there are things in a vehicle that are HUGELY more important than CarPlay perhaps?
Maybe a safety option is on the list that could save the life of a loved one?

Let us see how long it takes to jailbreak this "incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services" because no one is looking for subs in their car ...

I guess I don't really understand why car manufacturers are interested in mucking around this part of the car experience rather than leaving it to more experienced companies to do it. Maybe they see this as encroaching on their domain?
Easy enough. The creeps at GMC want part of the action mining users' personal data like Google does. After a Suburban and two Yukon XLs I am now done with GMC.

I can't imagine myself buying any current GM car but not having CarPlay is not so bad. My current car did not have it but Sony sells a CarPlay radio for $299. Swap out the old FM radio CD player and now have CarPlay and a backup camera.

Check out Best Buy and the like, retrofitting Apple CarPlay is not expensive.

Why à manufacturer like GM wants to stop CarPlay is beyond me…here in Europe GM is not very famous but in U.S it is huge I think , and since a large part of Americans own an iPhone this is against all logic
The do not want to stop CarPlay, they want part of the corrupt action as corrupt Google corruptly scrapes users' personal data.

It's all always about money. Period.
I think it is weird GM would completely drop CarPlay and Android Auto support. Sure, make your own in-house option. Have it enabled as the default. But leave CarPlay and Android Auto capability intact. If they were confident in their solution, they would go that route. But clearly there aren't - which his why they are completely dropping CarPlay and Android Auto support and forcing GM buyers into their solution. Seems lame.
Yes it is about money and yes it is lame. Google makes $billions scraping our personal data and GM will share in collecting and selling everything about drivers and their vehicles. Huge opportunity for corrupt theft of personal data.

Nonsense. The creeps at GM that will be sharing users' personal data with Google for $$ might claim that, but it would be pure BS.

The answer is in collecting data about drivers and how they drive. Clearly Apple don't allow this or even facilitate it through CarPlay and GM wants a way around it. So their new Infotainment System is gonna be a cloaked tracking box, basically.
Yup. But far more than simply selling users' GPS location data. All of users' data will go through the Infotainment System. GMC should call it their User Data Resell System.

Sadly, I have seen people go down the road of just buying into new subscription services and micro-payments for things that used to be free. Younger people are used to it and it gets worse and worse. I'm old and I will resist it. I hope others do too.

The motivation behind what GM is doing is money. Time will tell, but I doubt they will add anything better to the user exerience.
Yes! I'm waiting for the time I have to send a PayPal payment to roll my windows down!

I love using CarPlay in my car, but basically I need it for Waze, FlitsMeister, Apple Music and occasionally to call someone.
If a car-maker has these built in and does it well, I am okay with it.
So an internal "live maps app" (including traffic and speed-traps) with Apple Music (or Spotify) and a bluetooth connection with iPhone, is okay for me.
So you're willing to pay for something you already pay for? This is double dipping. You have a cellphone you pay for your subscriptions you have a cell plan. You should not be paying again for the right to use what you have. You also should not have your person information sold for something you are spending 20K plus on.
It's understandable that car companies don't want to giver space in their own product to companies like Apple or Google but, oh boy, do they face an uphill battle at the current state of affairs.

If only they wouldn't see their cars UI as a way to get another rent they would have some chance.
Car compaines aren't software companies. Say it again. Not Software companies. You already pay the software company Apple/Streaming Provider/Cell Providers. The car is a car. That's the market they chose. My car will interface with my phone in a convient fashion. If you don't want to offer that someone else will.

I use Amazon Music via CarPlay daily for my long commute. I make phone calls via Carplay/Siri. I do not pay extra to do these things. These things are Hands Free. You sit there and talk about safety but you want people fumbling around with bluetooth and a mount to put the phone near the steering wheel that's likely going to fall while driving. All to do something that can be built into the car.

The problem was already solved. People aren't going to pay for things they already pay for unless they are stupid. People will continue to use what they already have on their phone. This is just going to reduce safety and move backwards. All so GM/Telsa/Whoever else can harvest data to make them undeserved money and double dip charge for things people already pay for once again undeserved profit.

Any of these companies could have their own infotainment system and tether to your phone to use the Cell Plan you already pay for. Tesla could let you log into the subscriptions you already have. They are doing this for one reason money. There is no logical reason to do this. There is no customer benefit. It's pure greed. They are looking at what people are willing to pay for and making you pay again. They are getting kickbacks not including every streaming service and not letting you use subscriptions you already have.

Do not support this behavior.

Does anyone know how much it costs auto manufactures to add CarPlay to a vehicle? Do they pay a license fee per car or something?

Nice of GM to make a move that doesn't benefit their customers 😅

How many years until they're forced to reverse this decision, with their tail between their legs?

Too true. Electronics is always the first thing to fail on cars.☹️ My newest car is a 2013 Odyssey; everything works perfectly, except the electrical systems. The power door sometimes doesn't want to open and I have to manually open it.😩 My 1999 Tacoma--power nut'in'--has "no issues."😊 Tacomas have well earned reputation, IMO.😎 Well the crappy radio doesn't work, but then I don't use the radio so "no issues."
Tacomas and 4 Runners, especially the older gen ones are great trucks . There is a reason they hold their value.

I drive an early 2000's SUV, and I'll keep it until there are no longer parts to repair it. The visibility out all windows is exception compared to modern cars, and I can actually do the repairs myself...
I had a 1998 Grand Cherokee. The one with the bullet proof straight 6. Unfortunately it went underwater in a hurricane. I miss that truck. I mainly used it as a surf vehicle but if not for that hurricane Im positive I'd still have it.

A buddy of mine had a few, his dad liked to work on them, and said even after 250k the engines were always running smooth as long as you did proper oil maintenance.

Perhaps you're right. I wish car manufacturers like GM would just focus on improving the core "mission" of a vehicle -- driveability, reliability, etc.

Why can’t GM adopt that? It’s probably a cost associated with it and they probably don’t want to pay some licensing fee or something in that area.
Apple doesn't charge car manufacturers fees, though that doesn't mean car manufacturers necessarily get it for free. It might require additional components in some cases, I imagine.

GM is not chasing reduced costs here but recurring revenue. For me at least, it's going to backfire. I haven't bought a GM lately, but the majority of my cars over my life have been GM. And I won't buy another.

(CarPlay is funded through iPhone sales.)

Spy on customers and...

Uh-huh. Sounds suspiciously like they want seat heater subscription, A/C subscriptions(?), power windows subscriptions(?).😒

Never gonna buy another GM vehicle.😤 There goes my dream of owning a new cherry red Stingray.😭
You'll just have to buy an old cherry red Stingray (or Sting Ray, if it's a C2).

I’m just thinking of future rental cars from Chevrolet. My last rental was a Subaru SUV that had CarPlay. It made navigating Hawaii a lot easier than having to find a suction cup mount to hold my phone. They really are banking on people using their ecosystem.
