I'm surprised a bigger deal hasn't been made of it, but yesterday on his Twitter account Geohot strongly implied that he has already untethered his own iPod Touch 3. If that's true, it would lend credence to his claims to have a solution waiting for the new iPhone.

The tweet in question was in response to another Twitterer calling him out and saying he didn't think George had a clue how to make an untethered jailbreak:

@itethered eh, one of these days I'll post a video of my ipt3 2:00 PM Jan 10th

I was under the impression that he had an untethered solution but he didnt release it because he lost that balloon-hunting contest. LOL
Hopefully the Dev-Team has in all in order but to be honest i believe they are waiting for the next iPhone OS update ( we wouldn't want them revealing their strategy too early)

oh man this is great! my dad is getting an iphone soon and he told me he wants me to jailbreak it for him, but since i told him it would be tethered and i explained what that means to him, he wants me to hold off until its untethered, which appears to be right around the corner =D!

Hacking 101. When you release a hack, the hackie fixes it.

You can almost be certain they are waiting for the next iphone to come out, before they release the exploit.

Hold on, don't get all excited yet. This doesn't mean Geohot is going to actually release an untethered jailbreak. He's made it perfectly clear that he's not intending to. At this point he's so sick of people demanding that he do it that I'd be surprised if he doesn't wait until the 4G is released.

yep from what I have read

on Twitter Geo isn't feeling the love right now and pretty much has a pretty strong hate for all the whiners and complainers he has had. about the tethering and wifi. I wonder how much he got in donations for purplera1n and blackra1n he just never seems happy with anybody. Oh and the balloons WTF! lol

But it must be pointed out that the arrogance and entitlement some of these people express is just unbelieveable.

Especially since they get it all for free.

No wonder he is sick & tired of the whiners.

Every time I hear about Geohot, I think of that stupid Brad Paisley song...

"It turns girls on that I'm mysterious
I tell 'em I don't want nothing serious
'cause even on a slow day I can have a three way
Chat with two women at one time

I'm so much cooler online
So much cooler online

I get home, I kiss my mom
And she fixes me a snack
I head down to my basement bedroom
And fire up my Mac"

I don't know why everyone's so confused about the balloons. Geohot wanted to win the contest so he could buy his friend a Camaro (and get himself on all the late-night talk shows -- did anyone see the guy from MIT on Colbert the other night, btw?). As an incentive to help him out, he offered to create an untethered jailbreak if he won. He didn't win, so he's continuing to sit on his exploit. What's so hard to understand?

Respect to the bro cause he is a smart dude and everything.
But who cares about that dumb balloon competition or what he wanted to buy with the money. What does any of that have to do with hacking the iphone? Help me win the money or ask MIT for an untethered jailbreak? :D
Shows how young he is. Hackers do it for the love of it and not for some dumb balloon thing or money or to be on TV. Thats straight up rediculous.
Shows his maturity level is low. The Dev Team would never even mention anything like that on their blog.
I doubt he has an exploit cause he doesnt seem like the one to hold back but I hope Im wrong.
But again cant really blame him, he's around 20 years old or something?

Why is he immature? He's not obligated to make a jailbreak for anyone. Who says hackers do it "for the love of it"? Maybe he'd rather do it for the money or the fame? hackers aren't one person but many people.. geohot is just one in a million, so to say that he should spend many hours of his free time to make a tool and then release it for free or else being marked as immature is just dumb.
People should understand that it's not his job to make these tools.. Yes he can but that doesn't mean he have to do anything if he doesn't want to.

A while back all he did was to tell people that if they would help him find the balloons he would make a new jailbreak. People didn't uphold their end of the bargain so he didn't either... And now they're whining and bickering at him for not making the tool.. wtf? If you would have just helped him find the dumb balloons he would have help you with the jailbreak people.. you failed him so he's failing you. It's not like he hasn't done enough for the Iphone community already.
besides he's currently working on the PS3 and has stated via his twitter that he's not working on the Iphone anymore. But that doesn't mean he won't resume jailbreaking the new 4G Iphone when it's out.

Edit: I just checked his twitter and it seems like he might build a boot dongle so you could boot your tethered JB iPhone/iTouch on the road if the demand is high enough.. So go vote http://bit.ly/73npLM it's def better than nothing.

The baloon thing is ridiculous because if you read how the MIT team went about it, they were super organized, and used a sophisticated socio-psychological model to recruit, collect and analyze the baloon-finding data. They had a website dedicated to it, and people had to register ahead of time to participate, and the cash reward for finding baloons were distributed out using a simple and easily understood formula that spread out the prize among the contributors. If Geohot thought he had a chance of winning the contest by tweeting around for some helpers, with a loosely formulated reward like an untethered jailbreak that he had no solid proof he could deliver, and that is of interest to only a limited portion of the population (everyone can use a little extra cash, but only some want untethered jailbreak), he grossly underestimated the level of organization and the number of recruitees an effort like this takes. He may be a genius at electronics and computer stuff, but he was a total amateur at sociology and strategic planning.

And yet he had 9 out of 10 when the MIT team submitted their results. Not bad for a rank amateur with none of the requisite sociological understanding.

Wow, I had no idea he'd been so close. If it were me, I'd be proud of such an accomplishment -- after all, he lost to people who had much more exterpise in that field than he did.

Enough of the balloon jibbersh (old news)

Does he have a true untethered jailbreak. Doesn't look like it from this tweet. We shall see.

Geohot's latest tweet with regard to tethered jailbreaks

geohot Do you want a dongle to boot tethered iDevice on the road? If demand is high enough, I may build http://bit.ly/73npLM

Honestly, i cant even be mad at GeoHot.. He has done everything for us for free.. He left the jailbreak scene for a while and let Dev Team handle it and when he saw that the Dev Team wasn't doing what he thought should have been done. He released an exploit of his own..(PurpleRa1n).. GeoHot does what he thinks is best for the community. And i agree that right now wouldnt be a great time to release the updated hack.. Think about it.. When was the last software update?? Months ago. So why release a hack now when their is probably going to be a new software update in the upcoming weeks? They will block your hack and then you have to start over from square one. If GeoHot felt that it was time to release an untethered jailbreak right now. Then he would have done it. Just like he does all the time. Yes, part of the reason is people keep nagging him about it, but when it comes down to it. You and i both know that right now is not a good time..

Yo Geohot, im really happy for you and Imma let you finish, but The Dev Team had the best Jailbreaks of all time. Of all time !

While it would be nice to have an untethered jailbreak, I really don't care one way or the other. And I'm certainly not gonna sweat some kid and boost his massive ego any further.

The thing that gets me is the hypocrisy if this rumor is true...

Wasn't one of the reasons he released purplera1n because dev was holding out for the next iphone release?

Oh yea... http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2009/07/i-make-it-ra1n.html

But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn't how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn't worth waiting because you might have the "last" hole in the iPhone. What last hole...this isn't golf. I'll find a new one next week.

Thaaaaaaaaaats right.

I don't think he's holding out for the next release. I think he's pissed off by the whining and has decided not to work on the iPhone for now.

I understand that I guess... You mentioned waiting until the next release in your first post though.

I think he's being a bit immature anyway if he's holding off because of that. Not like we all "deserve" his work... but how does he go and complain about people complaining and think that he's any better? He's got a bit of an ego problem. He's a smart and generous guy, for sure, but he also wants everyone to know it.

So people tweet at him and complain... So what? Don't read all them! Solution found! I have not used any of his products before anyway. I'll wait for dev team. They are much more professional about the whole thing anyway. When people "demand" jailbreaks from Dev they don't even dignify a response and just keep on working.
