Gesture Typing is genius

I just got Android 4.2 on my Nexus 7 (I bought it to test Android) and "Gesture Typing" is so good, good ...
Why don't we have the same kind of innovation for the iPad - I am thinking about selling my iPad 4 for a Nexus 10?
What are the reasons for staying with Apple?

For staying with Apple on the iPad it's all about the Apps and integration with Apple's systems.

Gesture typing works fantastic on my N4 and N7 but I couldn't see it being much more useful on the larger 10" tablets (I've yet to try it so I'm only assuming here).

I don't know if the gesture typing alone is enough for me to want to switch platforms myself.

That's not Google innovation...that's Google ripping off of the really old Swype keyboard.

I almost never agree with you but in this case, it seems like it's true. I wonder how the creators of Swype felt about this new addition.

Notification Center is similar to Android's notification shade, but different...

It's a rip-off man. I'm not saying that's bad, cuz Swype is cool, but it's not a "Google innovation." Little of Android 4.2 is innovative.

Exactly. The main reason I stay with an iPad....integration with Apple TV, control my air port extreme, and the apps are better IMO. An android phone is great, but if you are invested into apple an iPad is a must

Well, I see what you are saying. The difference is with gesture typing, the predicted word shows in real time while you swyping, while the word show after you finish swyping with swype.

I'm just wondering if Swype has any patents over this. Cuz this is so blatant it's almost asking for a lawsuit. It's not the first time they've been ripped off though. Eh, if Google can get away with it then I'm sure users will enjoy it.

Yeah, it's great for the users. It kind of reminds me of how Microsoft started to bundle IE with Windows.

I think by allowing the auto complete follow your finger instead of only showing up after you finish swiping is the key to what makes this so great. I tried it at t mobile and loved it.

I agree, I am a Swype convert but this seems to take it up a notch. Since having it on this phone I have had no desire to install Swype at all.

Only because you know apple would call themselves the inventor of it. Have you read their press release of apple maps? They hailed it as new and innovating. They used those two words. Or when they called the iPhone 5 the worlds thinnest device. Or when they say the iPad can be used one handed (used, not just held one handed. Ive himself is the one that says it in the video).

I've always said, something about apples keynotes and presentations always feel disingenuous. Like they trying so hard to impress you. I can still hear Tim cooks "this is just jaw dropping!!" line. Whereas if you look at the fellas at google, something about them feels more humbling. There is humility there. They admit their missteps and speak of android as only one third done. There's still more to do, etc. It's a stark difference to the way apple presents.

And Ultimately, there's no excuse not to improve their keyboard. Frankly it's a pain typing on my iPad this day and age. The missed keys and the silly auto corrections are dreadful. Lack of suggestion bar, lack of control over the dictionary, lack of different input methods all make the experience harder than it needs to be.

I tend to not care about the language each company uses to sell their product, but I will agree that Apple is often hyperbolic. Their apology for Maps and revision of its description on their website was refreshing, though. And some of it is defensible (iPhone 5 could be argued as thinnest, you can use Mini one-handed). Google employees may be more realistic, but they don't have the same enthusiasm, and often they sound like pompous brats to me. So neither is very good, in my opinion.

But yes, I would enjoy some keyboard improvements in iOS. I think it's competent and responsive, but I would like more options e.g. Swype or Swiftkey.

You can't be serious.

Wow, you guys are nitpickers. I'm saying you CAN use it one-handed, not that it would be easy, comfortable, ergonomic, or even really practical, but you can.

It's mostly Matias Duarte, and some of the speakers at the conferences.
