Presumably I could toggle one monitor to its DisplayPort input during boot to select OSX or Windows, and then toggle back to DVI input. Should be okay, right?

I have Dell U2410. Nice thing about DP is that when the display isn't in DP mode, there is nothing detected on DP. This is opposite of DVI, where even if you are using VGA or the Dislpay is powered down, the EDID from DVI still goes to card and it "thinks" DVI is on.

BTW, I want to point out that the man who made using GTX5xx cards possible, Netkas, now has a "Donation" button.

It would be nice if everyone using one of these "non supported" cards took a moment to thank him.

yeah saw that earlier today.
I totally agree with you. I'm personally gonna do it, and recommend to all who have used some of his hacks to do the same.
Some way to show him our gratitude.

Thanks MacVidCards for that extra info re DisplayPort --- seems sensible, in that I guess the OS won't try and put windows on that display as it knows there is no monitor there.

For Netkas: absolut! A donation is an easy way to show our appreciation. Will do when I am up and running with a GTX5xx!

so with 10.6.8 there is now no need for a helper card... interesting.. i might have a go at this myself see if i can get a gtx 480 going...

so just generally in steps...

1. update to 10.6.8
2. install mac 4xxx quardo driver
3. install ATY_Init (then mod as Toumak said "*snip*Then add the card's device ID to /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAGF100Hal.kext/Contents/Info.plist :
0x108610de&0xffe0ffff
Replace 1086 with the ID of your card :*"

so id use the gtx 480 ID there.

4 fix permissions
5 reboot...

and that should be it?? sounds doable...

any reason why 10.6.8 has done away with helper cards??

GTX 570 cuda support?

i want to use a CUDA GPU for Adobe Premiere Pro mercury engine

Does the GTX 570/580 supports CUDA with Lion 10.7.2?
Can I use the cuda driver Quadro 4000 for mac?

hmmm

thanks for help - TiMovie

The GTX5xx cards can be made to work in 10.7 and later but require ATY_Init, a "helper" card and adding the device id to the NVDANF100HAL kext.

If you want OpenCl that is a separate hack.

The GTX580 is not a good choice due to it's need of an 8 pin power supply while Macs have only 6 pin.

You mentioned that there is a separate procedure for Hacks as opposed to the one that is meant for Macs (found here):

Do you know where I would find the solution for the Hackintosh that I have? Thanks...

You are far better off to just get a 6870 as suggested. Any orangutan can get decent results with a 6870 so they are a far better choice for 99.9% of the people reading this.

I couldn't agree with you more. Using the 6870 2GB GPU that I have works right out the box - no issues. But since I want to use GPU for Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, then I need to try something to make my 580 GTX (3GB RAM) work somehow...

I have a brand new 480 GTX (1.5GB RAM) GPU, but that too doesn't want to work as the screen goes black right after the Apple logo and spinning wheel boot screen...

Boot the 480 into Windows and do some graphic intensive stuff. (Crysis, Deus Ex, etc)

If it is solid and stable you for sure have a driver problem.

InsanelyMac might be a good place to look for help with Hack in that case.

Thanks, but I'm already a moderator for that site. I think you're right about the driver thing; that's what it is... I've tried every place and still nothing... The crazy thing is the 480 on 10.7.2 on my Hack was working just fine. I just don't get it... I mean using the 6870 is great but using the 480 or 580 GTX GPUs are better for rendering vids on Premiere Pro. Here' s a great article that shows the bennies:

Here's another one:

And there was another link that showed a better test result than the one above, just can't find it now. Oh well, you get the point... Thanks again for the help...
