Hmm...do you have an example of where this is not allowed to be said? Pretty much every one of your Watch posts is critical but I'm not aware of them being censored in any way. And no we don't all agree that it's "huge, bulky and gigantic". The people that seem to be saying that the most have never seen the watch in person. Some of us choose to reserve judgment until we've actually seen it hands on. ;)

The same thing could be said of the first-generation iPhone and iPad. But if nobody buys something because they're waiting for a better version that better version may never come. You need early adopters and beta testers to improve the product and make it better for everyone.

Have you met this small company called Microsoft? They release lots of improved sequels to products that didn't sell in their first generations. Always have.

Except Apple is not Microsoft. People expect things they release to be successful from day one. I guarantee you, as silly as it is, there will be iPhone and iPad like expectations with Watch from day one. And if there is any indication sales are soft the product will be branded a failure and Apple DOOMED.

Personally - it depends highly on the price. I have a Pebble and love it, but I don't have all that much invested in it (given the resale value, it'll probably cost me $80 for the entire time I'll own it).

At $349, the first gen Apple watch is an okay prospect. It'll cost you $349 - and you'll probably be able to sell it for $250 when the next model is released. If rumours are true, then the high end ones are going to be a completely unrealistic purchase. $5000 for an untested watch, which may or may not have issues which will be probably be fixed in the second revision a year later is way too high.

If I were Apple, I'd release the cheap one first. Collect bug reports, and release an updated version - with the more expensive gold one - maybe 9-12 months later.

If they go that route, they'll never sell a bunch for $5000. They'll take the mass sell and fix later approach.

I have said this before. :)

Apple can, if they wish just market the Gold watch, heck make it a Platinum one, virtually totally as an advertising piece if they wanted to.

I don't think they will do this as it's not Apple's way, and they are showing them on their web site as if they are aimed at normal current Apple customers.

But they could do.

A few high end celebs wearing the gold one as the money is simply not an issue, and they get that feeling of being special, as general people won't have the gold model. On TV it will be noticed "Oh you have a gold Apple watch" Hence more media focus and attention for Apple.

Again, I don't think this is Apple's way, as I feel it would backfire to the mass buyers who feel they are the lower class who can't be expected to afford one.

At the moment, I still think Apple want to sell the Gold models to normal customers who want to pay more, but not put it unreachable.

Also, as I have said before, if it was Apple's intention to make the gold models very very exclusive, I don't think they would be so much mixed into the general consumers website as if it's just a little option.

I've been thinking for ages $1000 to $1500 for the gold, and after some case calculations and gold prices, if the case is as thick as I think it is, then I'd place the price at the $1500, depending on the Gold in the strap, we could tack on a bit more, but still, we'd be in the $1500 to $2000 bracket, and that COULD be looked upon as a fair price for the materials still.

Unless the case if thicker than I think, then I'd currently suggest over $2000 and you are into 'Pricing over and above value for fashion/profit' reasons.

Also, I could suggest, once you passed this range, you really are stepping outside the zone of many buyers, even ones with money who may then feel, best to wait for the next model before committing.

I could be wrong, but that's where I am today thoughts wise.

Yep

Getting a first generation "anything" is probably not the most wise choice.
But, oh so much fun being one of the first kids on the block with a new toy :D

Very good points, I will keep this in mind. Still don't know if I will be able to resist the urge to get one as soon as it's out though. :p

I actually currently use a Pebble watch and absolutely love it. I typically charge it everyday anyways so having to charge an Apple Watch daily is not a problem to me at all. I use my Pebble with iSmoothRun and run at least an hour or more and get tens or hundreds of notifications a day, so I'm usually around 50-60% battery by the end of the day. I could probably get away with going another day, but I don't want to risk running out of battery. How many people currently wear their watch while they sleep? I, for one, do not, so charging while I sleep is not a problem. I will be preordering an Apple Watch the second they are available for presale and won't regret it one bit.

I wouldn't say it's unwise. There's a tradeoff in that you take a small risk of problems, but you also gain a year or two of early access. Seems fair to me!

If history shows, getting first gen hardware from Apple is almost always a big mistake as the second generation version is usually a huge improvement

First main issue, daily charging for a watch? LOL. This is going to be BY FAR the biggest complaint and apple will spend the most time fixing it

Second, the thing looks huge and bulky. Looks gigantic and we know apple just will make this thinner and thinner which it needs to be

Third, apps, I'm going to let developers play with this thing for an year before I buy it because right now all the apps look like cheap useless gimmicks at this point
Getting second gen hardware from Apple is almost always a big mistake as the third generation is usually a huge improvement
Getting third gen hardware from Apple is almost always a big mistake as the fourth generation is usually a huge improvement
Getting a fourth gen hardware from Apple is almost always a big mistake as the fifth generation is.......

Plus people are gonna buy it cuz it's from Apple. It doesn't matter if it's a rock or a watch. The branding is strong with this one.

I actually went out and bought a pebble yesterday to hopefully curb my appetite for the first gen Apple watch.

I don't think it's hating on apple to expect a lot of issues with the first apple watch. It's just a reality of any new product and their growing pains. I'm excited to see the new watch and hopefully I can wait a year for the improved version.

I also bought one yesterday for the same reason. How are you liking it? I love mine, but I wish it had the ability for pre set quick responses. Also, I'm wondering how much battery the Apple watch will drain now that I've used a pebble.

I actually returned it a week later. It was nice, but i was still pulling my phone out to reply to messages and what not. It was great for game updates, weather and email. I always reply to texts so it didn't save me any time there. I started using the pedometer function too but didn't like how the app had to stay open all the time. If. Loses it by accident it would restart my steps. The battery life was good too.

I am just going to wait for the apple watch. I may not even like that lol. Love my gshock though.
