You can use also QuickTime in macOS High Sierra to encode videos in H.265. Just check the „use HEVC“ button during export.

But it‘s very very slow in comparrison to Handbrake. A 5GB file takes more than 20 hours on a 2016 i7 Macbook Pro to encode.

I'm wanting to use Handbrake to convert my mkv movies to h.265 in order to use on my 10.5 iPad Pro. Handbrake has several options of which I'm using "H.265 MKV 1080p30" and changing container to MP4 and video framerate to the appropriate setting (mostly 23.976).

1. Will iOS 11 be able to playback current h.265 encoded files from Handbrake or should I wait?
2. When will h.265 playback become available on iOS 11 beta? Or is it a "later this year" feature?

I tried adding an h.265 movie to my iPad via iTunes on my Mac mini and iTunes stated the movie was not copied because it could not be played on the iPad.
or you could use nplayer to directly play BR rip mkvs on your idevice. That's how I do it.

Or just use infuse to playback instead of the Appel built in app. Then your worries go away.

This mostly only works because Infuse would use AVFoundation to playback the H.265 stream. And since the bug/issue is in the container, yeah, it would work. But that still doesn't really address the underlying bug/issue. I think it's fair to ask Apple what they can do here, especially since the new OS is still in beta, and this is a new feature. These sort of discoveries is kinda what beta is for.
