In a house...duh!
I'm actually having more than my fair share of crashes on my first generation iPad since 5.0 and 5.01. Annoying, but I'm never doing anything vital at the time so I just figure it will get fixed in a future update.

Seems like fewer since 5.01 but they still occur.

Safari on my original iPad worked perfectly for over 4 weeks thru 5.0 and 5.0.1. Then suddenly it started crashing. After trying several things, I tried going to Safari Bookmarks>History>Clear History. After doing this, Safari stopped crashing. Worked for me, may work for you. Suggest you close Safari afterwards and do a restart.

I'm not sure if this worked because I had too much history or if there was corruption, but after clearing the history it has not crashed again.

Getting SUPER tired of it. I've reported it to Apple, I don't know what else to do. Crashes almost every time I use it.

Ironically, Safari crashed on my iPad 1 as I read this thread!

Safari crashes frequently now under iOS 5. I suspect that it now runs out of memory more frequently because the OS takes more memory to start with, but that's only a guess.

Annoying but not disastrous yet. Maybe iPad 3 will have 4GB memory!

I'm getting Safari crashes often, usually when it's playing an embedded video. It'll play for a few seconds, then it'll crash to the home screen.

File reports at Apple.com

There is no reliable fix for this. I had the same problem with my iPad 1 and after wiping, restoring, playing with settings etc, it still did it. It was rock solid before tabbed browsing in iOS 5

I bought an iPad 2 last week. Restored my iPad 1 to it, it's totally stable. Something in Safari in iOS 5 doesn't like iPad 1 hardware - that's my guess.

I reported it. The more people that actually report it, instead of posting on forums about it, the more likely Apple will see the issue and get it resolved.

Same problem on my iPad 1.

The iPad error reporting system claims it is due to low memory.

I use the task switcher to kill any programs I am not using since I hate the tab reloading curse that follows, so it is rather surprising to me that safari now has memory problems with almost nothing loaded.

Safari has become the memory hog that is the curse of iOS like IE was the curse of windows?

Can't wait for next April... Hopefully apple will finally give us 1GB of RAM.

Yep same thing here.. I actually came here to rant about my crashes. It has gotten out of hand and making the use of safari a hit or miss.. Mine crashes everyday on multiple sites. Like everyone elase never had any crashes before iOS 5.

Where does one find the iPad Error reporting System??

Settings...general...diagnostics and usage (all the way at the bottom of the general menu)... Diagnostics and usage data.

I know it is there, yet I still have to hunt for it every time.

Provides a list of the files generated every time a fault occurs. 90% of mine are low memory crashes where it lists mobile safari as the process consuming the largest memory, and that it was "jettisoned".

I am starting to think that it isn't Just that safari is a memory hog, but that iOS5 has a memory leak. Last crash, I killed every process, and I still only had about 3 mb of memory free, and the used memory was like 84MB. Reset the ipad, loaded safari, and my used memory jumped up to 150 MB, with 80mb of memory free. Or maybe it is that I still don't get the Apple memory terminology. Wired vs unwired? Active vs inactive? Free? Huh?

I remember the good old days before "multitasking" was added to the ipad... The os was much snappier then. Now it just feels bloated and cumbrrsome. Guess that is the price of using 30 month old hardware.

Looking forward to ipad3 and 1024mb...

Apple has determined there are memory leaks and is working to fix them in the next update.

Try Opera. Its in the App store.

I am unsure if it uses the internal webkit API, though.

Mine crashes so often it almost pains me to press a link or scroll, knowing it will cause it to crash! My iPad was so great when I got it...but now its basically useless because of all the crashes.

I have put up with it for a while now on my iPad1. A few days ago I deleted Safari History and also Cookies and Data. It has not crashed since although I must admit I have not pushed it as far as I might have in the past.

I stated back in post #4 of this thread that clearing Safari history stopped mine from crashing. Glad to hear it has worked for someone else.
