Why not have her SMS your email address instead of your phone number? It'll count as a MMS from her account but you'll save on the incoming text charge.

Though Twitter is a good idea too, but it sounds like she either likes her texting interface from her G1 (I'm assuming it's her's, and you have the iPhone?) otherwise your original plan of her emailing you would have worked out better.

Yes, have her text your email. I did this with my previous girlfriend and now have trained my new one to do the same.

If you have gmail set up to push though you don't have the excuse that I would use "Sorry I didn't text you back right away, my email checks every 15 minutes!"

In case it hasn't already been mentioned amongst the myriad of "get a new gf" comments.

Go get the textPlus app and you will be fine.

Figured I would toss that out there to help. If it has been mentioned, apologies.

Since you both have internet smartphones, just use e-mail. I did this with my ex-girlfriend and do it with my best friend all the time.

textplus app... free, unlimited texting... you just have to send her the first text so she knows where to text you and VOILA!

but dude... she's texting you WAY too much!

That is coming form some one who never tried to understand budgeting. It is not the big cost that kill you but all the little nickel and dime crap like the $5 extra a month that add up and add up fast.

You're still missing my overall point. Generally, the people who buy iPhones aren't going to be worried about an extra $5 a month. Now, sure that means a minority of people are going to be worrying about every charge and the other minority are the type that can jet off to where ever they want in the world and rack up huge charges and not think twice about it.

But any how, thanks for assuming so much about my budgeting skills, I guess thats why I'm able to get by on ~$500 a semester up here in Fairfax. Sounds like you should join the ranks of the Economics Professors here at GMU...

You pay $5 for one drink at Starbucks?

Oh no. I hardly ever go to Starbucks. I usually make hot chocolate at home. I can't stand coffee but perhaps I should stop by after class one day and check the prices again. :p

No you still miss my point.

As for you argument on getting by $500 a semester also proves my point even better. You think people who have an eye phone would not miss $5 a month (or in this post case adds up to $15 a month).
It seems like very little over all but that little extra stuff adds up fast. For example when I was working my monthly cost I would say were a little under $2000 a month. $5 or even $15 a month out of that seems pretty little doesn't it. Well I started going though my bills and I noticed something. I had quite a few extra $5-20 a month little extra cost in there. Little things like eating out 2-3 times a week for lunch. It was a little of little things that translated into a lot of extra change.

You think that oh they will not noticed but those not noticed things do add up really fast and if some one see an easy way to save $10 a month and not notice it I would say go for it.

No, I'm not missing your point. I understand your point that the little things one might overlook add up overtime. My argument is that, generally, people who own iPhones aren't worried about those little things/ costs.

Anyways, agree to disagree...?

I care about little costs and I have a iPhone 3GS.

I was just about to buy a eMac, but now I have to wait a month because my headphones chose now to break. It's only £34.99, but it's really annoyed me, and I care about it.

So your entire point you are making is if you are paying that much for an iPhone you should over look the extra $5 a month cost to go to the unlimited texting.

That is were your argument is flawed and where many people saying go unlimited is flawed. They refuse to pay attention to the nickel and diming crap.

it is sad, people wonder why so many are buried in debt and live paycheck to paycheck and why I quote of yours is a prime example of why so many are burried in debt and live pay check to pay check. They nickel and dime themselves to death.

Look what you should do. The Twitter idea is perfect but there is a way you can convince her even more to use it. Have her make a Twitter account or make one for her, whatever. Then, on your Twitter account follow her account and also subscribe to receive the SMS updates from her as well. Then in front of her have her update her Twitter and show her your phone when you get the text message.

After she sees it's basically the same thing, when your back at home unsubscribe from getting the SMS alerts from her account and your all set.

That way you are using no text messages even though she thinks you are and if you want you can get emails from her updates or check it manually. What do you think? :)

You are one sneaky bastard.

there is an app called TEXT free unlimited..its 6$ ..you can text anyone anytime for free and the replys come back to the app(which has push notifications)

easy fix.. works very well ..i have it

Beejive is the bomb. My wife texts too much and switching her to Beejive (at least for our conversations) saved a lot of overages. And it's actually better than texting. Definitely check this out.

I don't think Twitter is the answer. Go ahead and try, but something tells me she won't be satisfied with an indirect (and potentially public) way of communicating with you.

Also good luck ignoring her Tweets, IMs, whatever. She's going to quiz you on some of them when she gets home, like any woman would. You'll get caught in no time.

Twitter is indeed not the way to go for this purpose, plus the 140 character limit would get annoying.

I really don't see the problem with e-mail, it's just as convenient as text but it's free. The only slight downside is you might get the messages a little later if you don't have push enabled.

So your solution for him not having to spend so much in texts is for her to get an iPhone, getting herself into a 2-year contract, when she might even be on a contract for the G1? Smart...

Oops, I guess I should have put some sort of indication that I was not serious and being sarcastic. Some people aren't quite equiped with the latest and greatest sarcasm goggles.

So the girlfriend is really the only reason I need 1500 texts per month. And believe me, she maxes the hell out of them. She has the Google G1. I am looking for a good app with push notifications that works on both phones and acts like the standard text messaging app on the iPhone. That way she can text me through that and I can lower my texting plan.

Any suggestions? I know there are others out there who have experienced my situation.

The problem is you don't want to spend an extra $10 on your girlfriend? Just looking at my bill from last month, I sent and received a total of about 2500 texts, so while I feel your pain I will tell you to suck it up and get the unlimited texting plan. If your GF is not worth a few extra bucks a month than you may want to look into finding a more independent woman.
