So I turn off face detection in cameras and all apps
I do as well, even though I shoot my family and friends. I find many times the face detection locks on a face that alters the focus more then I may want.

I've been using Lyn for a few weeks now to manage my files. It seems to work good if it's not trying to browse more than about 100 photos. I have some folders with over 1500 photos and that makes Lyn bog down. It's quit on me several times now. Of course I send crash reports to the developer, but I don't know that I want to rely too much on this app.

My library has over 110,000 images. No problem to use Lr or Photo RAW Browser to view the images. Lr can slow down it it thinks it needs to build big previews for the images.

I was referring to the app "Lyn". Lr and ON1 Photo browse fine, if a little laggy sometimes.

I brutally trash all but a small fraction of my photos. My library is therefore small and does not require the automation of faces, etc.

Still experimenting with a workflow using Finder to organize photos, making folders, dragging photos into them and then being able to send them off to some of the fine editing programs people have touted here. If someone has a link to a system or has one themselves to share, thanks in advance.

Why Apple? Why'd you do it? I just want Aperture. It's still working great for me ... for the time being.

So what is the most Aperture-like DAM? LR? I'd prefer something that has legs. That won't be viciously terminated after getting very comfortable using it.

Quite.

Absolutely not Lightroom. That's the most un-Apple like application I've had the displeasure to rent.

Probably Capture One, but it really isn't a good DAM for large libraries. More suited to studio professionals. CP1 seem uninterested in serving our requirements any time soon.

On1 Raw, possibly in a year or so. Currently limited DAM and many missing features.

Luminar, possibly in a year or so as DAM being developed.

Affinity Photo, possibly in a couple of years and DAM being developed, but not high priority.

Conclusion - stay with Aperture for now. I didn't and have regretted in ever since. The move between applications is a right pain particularly when each fails to live up to expectations.

Well, despite the cost of Photo Mechanic, I downloaded a trial version and used it for about a week. It's VERY fast. It generated previews for large volume folders in a matter of moments. Everything is slick and smooth.
So, after a week of using it, I decided to spend the $150. I think it's over priced for what it is, but the speed advantages make it very appealing.

I've now got a workflow setup - Photo Mechanic for DAM, Capture One Pro using Sessions for photo edits, and Luminar, Affinity Photo, and ON1 Photo 10 for stylizing. I thought it would be overly cumbersome to use more than two apps, but it's not that awkward for me.
