I've been contemplating buying an iPad but I'm having a hard time justifying why I should. I have an iPhone 4 and a Mac notebook. Seeing as this is the iPad forum I was thinking you guys would have some info on what the iPad has that these don't or in general why it is worth buying?

You should buy one because searching the forums before starting a new thread is better on the iPad.

I was in the same postion. My suggestion is to hang around an Apple store and play with an iPad for a while. As soon as I did I ordered one. My primary purpose was going to be passing time on airplanes (where I spend too much time). It is just perfect for that. Reading is really nice, and can always change to games or other when you want a break.

What surprised me was that at home, when I just want to brouse, check weather, or other pursuits that do not take a lot of typing, I really prefer this to my Macbook Pro. When a lot of typing is involved I do go to the Macbook. (For travel, I have the Apple bluetooth that is great on the iPad).

What went down radically for me was my iPhone use. The larger screen is just so nice for most sites and uses.

There is lots of reasons at apple.com, I dont think there is really a reason to create a thread for this. Just saying.

Great to use with anything you need for school (i.e. calculator, finding random information, getting help, taking notes, ect.). It's even better to use if you need to type a paper and you're at school with no other computers...

Educational purposes and app developing are my two biggest.

Reasons to buy an iPad?

You are the only one who can answer that question. in the end, you are the one spending the money. And you are the one who's going to be using it.

In my case, when the iPad first came out, I told my self I would never buy one it was just a dumb toy and not a real computer, etc.
As time passed and I learned what the iPad can do, I became more interested, and finally ordered mine on June 6. So far, I don't have any regrets, and I really doubt I'll have any in the future.

So, what reason DO YOU have to buy yourself an iPad?

If you decide to buy it, unless you stay home all the time or live in the middle of nowhere, get the one with 3G.
It's better to have it available when needed, than needing it and not having it. And because there's no long-term contract, you can just buy service when needed. Plus, it comes with GPS functionality.
Also, IMO, don't get the iPad Keyboard Dock. Get the Apple Case, and if you must use an external keyboard, get the Bluetooth keyboard instead.

And don't forget to write back!

Don't buy it then. Are you sure that you can even afford it? Think about that first. Don't buy it, so that other people can actually get theirs sooner.

Another example of the age of excess.

I kind of want one, but I do have a macbook pro and an iphone4 - seems kind of indulgent. If I didn't have to get some kind of data plan with AT&T I'd probably go for it...

I'm in a similar boat except I have a *gasp* Windows based laptop! Right now my iphone 4 is pulling most of the duty, but I find myself wishing it had a bigger screen, so I'm starting to get the urge to buy an ipad just for web, netflix, etc...

That totally suks! (PC laptop) :D

but you should consider getting the iPad it is great for doing all those things especially over Wi-Fi around the house....books and movies are great.

You should get one because it helps with picking up chicks.
Well it definitely does not do that, but there are plenty of reasons to buy one. My sense is that most people who buy the Ipad love it; the product is not for everyone. Here are my usages:

What I use the Ipad for but rarely my computers or Iphone (Yes, I know most of these are technically feasible on a computer, but I just never enjoyed using them on my computer for them - and I own an MBA).
- Reading books, magazines, and comics
- Watching movies/TV - both downloaded and Netflix
- Playing games (I'll play quickly on the phone but just to waste time. Almost never on my computer)
- Second computer screen while at home/on the road (there's an app that basically makes the Ipad a second screen).
- Certain apps work better than the equivalent websites - e.g. Epicurious; NPR; BBC; NY Times;
- NBA Gametime - radio for all the games!

For checking e-mails and quick surfing, I grab whatever is most available and that's more often the Ipad than one of my two home laptops. Longer web searches, composing e-mails, documents etc... definitely traditional computer.

With all this mind, I use the Ipad at-least as much as any computer at home and the Ipad allows me to do many things that I just don't enjoy doing on a computer but love doing on the Ipad.

one important reason:

you can join the forum here and know what the hell we are talking about

Next time save yourself from all the smart ass remarks and do a search first.

Your topic has been hashed and re-hashed numerous times in MacRumors.

Okay, this will fulfill my smart ass quota for the week.

"If you're asking for a reason, then you shouldn't get one."

Wow... That felt sooo good.

I'm pretty sure most of you don't mind coming on here answering my thread, and out of all the useless threads ive seen on here(believe me I have seen alot) this one dosent seem that bad, I've already messed around with an iPad and know what it can do I just figured I could get some people with first hand Experience owning an iPad and what the advantages are to having one. So thank you to the people that gave me some decent answers and to the people who's time I wasted by starting a useless thread, I'm sorry. Continue on finding other useless threads to complain about, sorry I wasted your precious time. lol
