One thing about the pictures that Siracusa has in that article however is that all the pictures are taken at an angle. Any Physicist should be able to tell you that surfaces are more reflective when viewed from an angle, viewed face on the effect of the reflections is likely to be much less obvious.

Thats what a lot of people are saying. So I did a little search to see if I could find head-on photos and found these:

As you can see, while the reflections are not extreme, they are still definitely present.

It's going to depend on the individual whether that is going to be a problem. As someone who can be fairly easily distracted by extraneous movement/sound, I do find such reflections strongly objectionable.

has anyone

Has anyone used this service and can comment on its quality? I really want to do this to my MBP, do you know if this is the same thing that is on the current Macbooks? I wish mine had come with this to start. no chance apple would replace it i guess. When doy do this to the screen, does it void the warenty probably?

Blueflame, check out www.screentekinc.com and their pixelbright upgrade to add a glossy screen.

Estimates are that it runs about $100 US.

I had to buy a laptop PC (my first one ever) last year for work and it has a glossy screen. I use it everywhere; outside, by sunny windows, under strong lighting. The instances where the glare is even noticeable are very rare and can usually be fixed by moving the computer over maybe an inch or repositioning it ever so slightly. It's a laptop. The screen can be repositioned very easily.

Over the past year, I've found myself using the PC more than my iBook to surf the net, watch video clips, etc. because stuff just looks better. This has been very frustrating for me cause I hate Windows.

In order to see a reflection on the glossy you need to have a light source. I like to work in slightly darkened environments. There are anti-glare screen add-ons if necessary. How do you make a matte screen glossy, WD-40 or canola?

This is how I always thought about it:
Office work - Matte.
Graphics, entertainment - Glossy.

It's funny the first screens were glossy, then matte came along, now glossy screens are selling like it's something new.

i still dont know
seems like a big decision for $4k
can i take it back if i dont like the gloss?

yes and no: if it's simply a case of buyer's remorse and the package has been opened, there is a 10% restocking fee. if the package is unopened there is no restocking fee. the return policy's time limit is 14 days. i would go check it out in the store first and then make an informed decision. i have a 15" 2.4GHz glossy screen and i love it - there is only one light source in the room and the only time there is glare on my screen is when looking at the screen off-axis - but how often are you really looking at the screen from any direction but dead-on??

 MacBook Pro 15" 2.4GHz glossy, 4GB RAM, 250GB HD

10% of 4 grand is HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, therefore you should probably figure out what you want for sure before you buy.

BTW I love how someone suggested that if you get a glossy and you don't like the glare you can get an anti glare add on. So now you have a glossy screen with too much glare and some extra thing to add on to make it look like it's matte when you should have just gotten matte to begin with.

When I saw the MBPs at the Apple store, I loved the glossy screens. But I do a lot of work editing photographs and I know that a matte will give me a more accurate portrayal of the actual result.

So, go with my passion (glossy) or with my logic (matte)? (Not a professional photographer...... just serious hobby).

This is probably an obvious question, but why would a "pro" want matte? Less distracting? In the right environment, wouldn't glossy be good?

No. If I edit photos I want them to look like I edited them when I send them to print, not washed out because the Display 'appears' more vibrant...

I prefer the glossy screen, I spent about an hour in the Apple store and although the glare was more noticeable, this was with a large amount of overhead artificial lighting (Southampton, UK).
The picture was of a better quality and really stood out against the MBP's matte-counterpart next to it.
I'll be ordering mine with the glossy screen, and will only be returning should it for some reason not work out at home, but it should do, I have only 1 overhead light and a window perpendicular and behind the laptop.
Unless you live here http://www.loranges.com/peter/pics/mr_convention_06.jpg
You should be alright :D

I just got the mbp 17in glossy and I'm loving it. the screen is so vibrant I'm glad that I chose the glossy screen. I didn't even check it out before I bought it

I had a matte MacBook Pro until a few days ago; the IT department replaced it with a new one that is glossy. I love the glossy screen; it's so vibrant and color-rich, and I don't notice reflections at all, even in my office under fluorescent lights. It seems to be a better quality coating than my MacBook's screen (which my wife now uses), on which I noticed reflections more often.

Opinion: glossy=gimmick, avoid like the plague. the new ledbacklite matte mbps are the best laptop screen on the planet. a gloss screen only gets in the way of designing media accurately. believe me, i have used sony gloss screens since they first came out, and i am so glad that i have a mbp matte now... this is coming from a designer...

That's a pretty ignorant argument. What harm is going to come from someone getting the glossy screen if they prefer the way it looks? If they're a real designer, they'll know what they actually need. If not, what's the harm? I fail to see why people like you get all up in arms. It's not a gimmick. It's just different.
