Hey Guys-
I am waiting for the new MBP with Merom to come out (aren't we all?) and I was wondering which type of screen I should get. Could some people comment on the differences to help me with my choice?
Thanks

Glossy screens have been reported many times to have lots of glare when under bright lighting, but the glossyness makes colors stand out more and seem brighter. I personally would prefer the matte though since I'm one of those people who would really get bothered by constant glare on a laptop, and by one that will be almost unbearibly glary when used outdoor on a sunny day

The matte screens look worse than the glossy ones, but are more reflective. The matte screens scatter the light so it doesn't reflect very well, but in turn also scrambles the light coming from the screen. Glossy is just the light with no filtering.

Glossy, does not show "true" color. So for example, if your working on a graphic or editing a photo, the color on the screen, wont be the same color as if you were to print it.

Glossy gets a lot of glare with light and stuff, makeing some things harder to see. If your not useing it for graphics/photos/video editing and you will be useing it in darker areas a glossy screen is nice. However In general I would reccomend Matte.

I too am waiting for Merom MacBook Pro, sucks eh?

Pretty much.

I'd go with the matte. Even Apple advertises it as "glossy or antiglare" which to me implies that the glossy has glare. (people will argue that it doesn't. LIES!) Dunno how they even sell the glossy screens.

It's easier get a more accurate color from a matte screen than a glossy screen.

Is anybody really going off the colors on a laptop monitor anyway? I mean really... there are some many factors that change the color that you see on the screen and what is printed out. You need a high grade printer and a calibrated monitor in order to know for sure. Is anyone really going off the color on their mbp screen?

glossy should be blow off the face of the earth. the ONLY reason, I am not buying a macbook now, is because of that damned screen. I need a macbook, but if it has that glossy screen, I would rather use a pencil and paper.

If you would have searched the forums there are like 5 bazillion threads on this but since you didnt heres my opinion. I have a MB and from experience I can say I personally like the glossy screen a lot better. Its much sharper, has better colors and doesnt look as cheap to me. But thats my opinion. I would suggest going to an apple store and comparing side by side. The glare isnt nearly as bad as some other glossy screens I have used on different pc's. Also for those of you who have never used a new mac with a glossy screen , dont try to give advice if you dont know what your talking about.

Like I said, and the person above me said...

The color on matte is FAR more acurate then Glossy.

Glossy adds saturation and contrast. Matte will pretty much show true color.

umm some people on here are just a little ridiculous.

the glossy screen is very nice. i have the latest macbook. HONESTLY, it is a really good feature and it is very nice to look at. you can't REALLY tell its there noramally, but it makes images on the screen look VERY nice.

what you should do is go to the closest apple store and SEE FOR YOURSELF.

don't let people make choices for you, make your own choises from what you've experienced!

x2.

HOWEVER, if your going to be doing graphic/photo work DO NOT get a glossy screen, DO NOT! If your not going to be doing graphic and photo work, then go by how you like the screens.

AHAHAH Im sorry but that made me laugh. I'm not a big fan of the glossy screens. I was working on my aunt's windows laptop but my desk is right by the window so light is always shining in -- I could not see a damn thing cuz of the glare.

Sounds good, thanks for the advice.
I don't really care about color accuracy, any photo editing is done on my desktop with a calibrated monitor. Looks like I will be heading out to the apple store to check it out. The only reason I asked here was to see how they compared in real world (IE outside) scenarios.

You are being sarcastic right?

Otherwise:rolleyes: . Some people are too much.

I use my MBP in from of my bedroom window all the time. I have a glossy screen, and it's great. I've NEVER noticed any glare and the only time I've noticed the reflection was when my MBP was off and had a black screen.

If you're doing graphic/photo work to any degree of seriousness, you're not going to be working off a 13" screen anyhow. So really, you'd be hooking it up to an external monitor that will be calibrated much better and thus, the MB's screen shouldn't really come into play at all.

I´ve seen the MacBook & both MBP´s with glossy screens and hated the reflection, especially the 17" :p I wouldn´t get the glossy screen even if I didn´t use it for graphics, editing, etc.

If you read the title.. it says MACBOOK PRO, so it's 15 or 17 inch... I mean, either way, graphics should not be done on laptops, but what ever the case is, hes asking for MBP, so IF someone happens to use a MBP for graphics Matte is the way to go...

If memory serves me correctly... MacBooks are all Glossy,
