I just added a bunch of gmail addresses and found one that worked. My main account is also one from way back in the beta stages, but that wasn't the one that triggered the dark mode. it was a more recent one. Didn't need to create a new one.

Got it to work. Followed the instructions from here: https://www.idropnews.com/how-to/st...t-heres-how-you-can-try-and-enable-it/127831/

Numerous users have reported success with switching accounts and getting dark mode enabled, and we’ve tested this ourselves and it works — again, provided you have access to an account that has already been enabled for dark mode. The trick is to make sure that the “dark mode” account is the only one enabled on your device when launching the app.

  1. Open the Gmail app on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap on your picture in the top-right corner to bring up your list of accounts.
  3. Tap Manage accounts on this device.
  4. Switch off all of your accounts except for one.
  5. Tap Done.
  6. Force-quit the Gmail app.
  7. Wait about five seconds to make sure the app is fully closed.
  8. Enable Dark Mode on your iPhone or iPad if it’s not already.
  9. Launch the Gmail app.
If the selected account has been enabled for Gmail’s new dark mode, the app should launch in dark mode. If not, repeat the above steps with a different account selected. If dark mode hasn’t yet been enabled for any of your accounts, and you’re desperate to have it, some users have also reported success getting it by setting up a new Gmail account.

It worked!!! Can’t believe it. My main account is from the very early beta days, no joy. I logged in with my dads much later account and BOOM! I’m staggered, been moaning about this for aaaaaages lol.

Had to do the process on every one of my devices (1x iPhone, 2x iPad).

Had it for a while.

But dont understand the Gmail app hubbub. It's a TERRIBLE app really eve if it does a few gmail features like sent later.

Lets say you have filters on to auto archive certain messages. You have a few gmail accounts. You cant just go to "all mail" (archive) and find it in the full ist for all accounts. You have to know what account it was sent to and switch to that account. The only unified mailbox is the inbox.

Or you sent an email you want to go back and look at. But cant remember what account you sent it from. Well good luck if you have a few accounts and have to change through every account and the sent box to find it.

I just cant understand the hype over the app. It feels like email from 2010 the way its set up; maybe earlier. I think Apple Mail has even always had unified boxes for inbox, sent, all mail, and deleted. This is like a web app of the Gmail site at best (and half the features).

There is no hype imo. It’s a very poor app, doesn’t even support long established iOS features (split view, or even slide over).

Unfortunately, for Gmail accounts specifically, all the alternatives - I’ve tried most of them - are generally garbage. Either unreliable (not sent issues, attachment issues, messages not arriving in timely fashion etc) or serious question marks over how they are funded.

I don’t consider Gmail as private or particularly secure, I just use it mostly for inconsequential frippery, not work.

Coincidently, I got the dark mode enabled today, with the last update (it seems like). Yey!

I just opened the app and was surprised to see that I have it now as well. I think we already determined that it doesn’t seem to matter which version of the app you’re on since people seem to be getting the feature at different times, but below is the version I’m on if anyone is curious.

Yea checked for update again and force killed and all the usual jazz, and still no setting for dark mode. I don't understand the BS with it taking so long just for a color theme????

Keep it just for searching since Outlook is trash for searching, but would never use it full time again due to this garbage of taking effing years just to get a color theme!!
