I don't mind this route anymore. I used my outlook for anything important like banking, iTunes, and others and @me for friends mad family. I went this route due to iCloud lacking 2 step verification (maybe coming soon), so anything financial or important is protected my @outlook 2 step verification.

????? iCloud/Apple ID have 2-step verification.

True, but while it's harder for a hacker to change your password on your Apple ID account, but if your password is not that great it iCloud.com can be hacked.
That sort of applies to any type of account or network login. Poor password, poor security.

I've had a .mac address since 2000, when iTools debuted. I'm all Apple at home, but it's a Windows world at work. My girlfriend and I both have iPhones and iPads all running iOS 7, and three Macs between us, all running Mavericks. For me, silent email filtering, both outbound and inbound, concerns me, but as far as I know, nothing critical has ever gone missing (of course, how would I know!?). Gmail is more robust, but I find it better to pick an ecosystem and stick with it, so I've gone iCloud for everything. It's been pretty solid for me. Just to be sure, though, I do weekly backups of contacts, calendars, reminders, notes to Dropbox, and hourly email backups to an external hard drive via Time Machine. I rely on the icloud.com website at work, and I find its features lacking, but it gets the job done.

My wife and I are in the exact same boat. I would prefer to have a "one-stop-shop" for everything (mail, contacts, calendar, cloud storage) but no single option has all of the features I would like. Currently, I run icloud & gmail for email, icloud for contacts/calendaring and OneDrive for cloud storage.

With the introduction of ios8, I was hopeful to be able to switch my cloud storage to icloud as well. However I agree with a lot of the posts in this forum and have been displeased with initial function and capacity of icloud drive. The inability to pull up (a PDF for example) on my iphone that is stored in icloud baffles my mind.

Like you, I use icloud.com while at work. "Features lacking" is being awfully nice, I think they website is terrible. The email interface with icloud.com is..... just mind blowing (emails not grouped by conversation?? really??)

All in all, I am choosing to remain in a holding pattern until the release of OSX yosemite to see if the functionality of icloud drive improves. If not, I plan on switching everything to gmail/google.

I've been trying to decide whether or not to use iCloud email instead of gmail. Currently thinking of moving my apple id over to iCloud email and still keep gmail for everything else. But not 100% sure.

Figured I'd chime in here.

About a year ago, I decided that Google and it's business practices of selling my info to the highest bidder (or gov't) wasn't in my best interests, so I began to switch everything to Apple.

As it's been mentioned before, you CANNOT use your @icloud.com email as your primary ID for whatever reason, so instead I use @live.com for my primary ID. Microsoft has a really great migration tool to get every gmail email over to their servers, which I've done. All of my pictures are taken out of Google's servers and put on OneDrive (iCloud simply doesn't have the free space, currently).

So now, I use iCloud exclusively. It's worked great so far. :apple:

Using Gmail as I want to use my own domain(s). These then forward to my iCloud account to give push email.

Phone and Macs set up to send using Gmail, not iCloud SMTP server. Can't beat the web interface of Gmail IMO.

Would switch to iCloud entirely if I could use my own domain "properly".

I use iCloud mail as it is much more nicer to look. The folders are much cleaner and easier to understand. I chose iCloud mail as I have iPhone and a Mac. I love the built-in Mail app on my Mac, and I like also the native one on my iPhone.

I do also own a Gmail account but I rarely use it.

5GB is enough for me.

I've been back in forth between emails. Started with yahoo then aol. Then Hotmail/outlook. Tried gmail and just do not like the labels. Too chaotic for me. Got an iphone a while back but gave outlook and gmail a try. I am certain I will stick with apple. I got to an age I do not want to dick around and just love the simplicity of icloud and apple. All my other emails forward to hotmail then that forwards to icloud as an extra buffer for spam. iCloud from now on.

Hi,

Although I had used an iPhone in the past and have used an iPad mini for a few years now, I only recently have begun to delve further into the Apple world. A few months ago, I moved to an iPhone again. That said, I have just made the switch this past week to using iCloud email and calendar for my personal use. I last used outlook.com and years prior used gmail. Along the way our email on the web has grown full-featured and into more of a lifestyle than just email. The iCloud email on the web is definitely a more clean and simple interface - I find it quite refreshing now. : )

Try Fastmail. You can use own domain and works awesome with Apple products. Email is push and it syncs perfect. $40 year works great for me.

Ah, I remember this thread.

Anyone else switch to/from iCloud and another push-offering service? I still toy with going to Outlook(.com) for everything, but my minimalist ways like having it all in one place with the same company that makes my Macbook Pro / iPhone / iPad / Apple TV.

I've switched between the big 3 for the last couple months and I'm done playing the game.

I've realized I will likely never own another Android device (while I like certain things, an all Apple system is hard to beat) and I have all Apple devices at this point and everything works so well with iCloud mail.

I hate the web interface, but luckily I don't own any PC or Android devices so I can use Mac Mail and iOS Mail and I'm good.

Outlook.com has great push on iOS, I think it's really good. The web interface is nice. Mac Mail implementation is less than good because it's not EWS so I would use the website. I use it for my Apple ID. But ultimately I just wanted to go iCloud because of Mac Mail and iOS Mail and it working so well.

As far as Google, I've been on and off again over the years but right now I'm off and plan on staying off for the foreseeable future.

I've left Google for everything except YouTube which I use without an account. There is no other YouTube lol.

Search: DuckDuckGo/Bing
Maps: Apple
Storage: iCloud Drive/OneDrive/Dropbox
Chat: Facebook Messenger/Skype
Mail: iCloud/Outlook.com
Photos: iCloud
Calendar: iCloud/Outlook.com

For me, the switch if it would ever happen would be back to Outlook.com.

FYI, Microsoft has started migrating Outlook.com accounts to the Office 365 infrastructure. After an account has been migrated, it's possible to use the full Exchange protocol (rather than just Exchange ActiveSync). Mac Mail should then be able to fully access mail, contacts and calendars. In the meantime, you can of course use IMAP to access at least email via Mac Mail.

Thanks!!

I definitely would switch back when that does occur, I really like Outlook.com.

I love my fastmail account as well. Even without your own domain it's great.

But Fastmail can be used as a simple mail address or only with domain?

It's a very reliable provider or it's better icloud, gmail or other big provider?

As I mentioned I am currently using fastmail and has been flawless. Has native push to iPhone mail app. So far has been just as reliable as other 3. They are headquartered in Australia but have servers in NYC by NY Internet which are top notch servers.

My only question is: a little email provider can be reliable in long term? The big data company are killing the little company :(
