I know Push is not available for the iPhone natively, I know about the apps.

My questions is: Why isn't there push for the iPhone through gmail?

If I am not mistaken, Google provides push for the Android phones. Is Google not providing push to the iPhone to try to sway customers to their handsets? Is there some sort of technological limitation that is preventing them from doing this, even though services like Hotmail (I think) offer it?

I just don't understand why gmail would keep push away from users if they had the ability to provide it.

Honestly, this isn't a rant, I am legitimately trying to learn WHY they don't, not complain about the fact that they don't.

Seems some details of this post needed to be emphasized.

Apple needs to implement it - not google

they need to add IMAP IDLE (not true push bit it does appear to work like push to the end user)

This is how the palm pre has push gmail, we just need apple to implement IDLE

GPush app.
That app is a bucket of fail. I installed it, and was stumped as to why I recieved no emails, for a few hours this morning. I thought it was just a slow day, but I fired up the mail app to be sure, and low and behold - 18 unread emails just sitting in the inbox!

Forward to Yahoo

For now I just created a new yahoo (rocketmail) account. Then forward a copy to it from my gmail and roadrunner accounts.

the subject is Gmail push - not mobileme/push in general
Sorry, when I see: "I know Push is not available for the iPhone natively" instead of "I know Push is not available for Gmail and services other than MobileMe on the iPhone natively", I just want to make sure folks do not get confused. :)

My native push works fine for my exchange account...

see what i did there?

If you guys want TRUE push email for Gmail and/or AOL, try nuevasync.com. Its 25.00 a year but I think its worth it. Im using it for AOL and my mail gets pushed in 5 secs. They offer a 3 day trial so you can test it yourself.

25$ does not sound worth it for push email in my opinion...

But as far as Gmail push is concerned, I do believe it's up to Apple to implement it, not google. (You can get push gmail to a Blackberry device..)

The Yahoo solution isn't viable as I carefully label my email and practice the zero inbox method. Yahoo doesn't recognize my folders/labels.

A native Gmail push-enabled app would be all I need to move the stock Mail app to the back page for me.

That's all I want - a native Gmail app, from Google, that's push enabled.

Try restarting/respringing the phone.

agreed. I have mobile me, but I don't route gmail through it for this reason.

I'm also just curious - why do people care so much about push email? I mean, I use gmail more than mm even though the latter pushes. It's just not that important to me to get my email *instantly.* For work, Ok (have a bb for that), but messages from my friends and family really don't need my immediate attention. And if they do, they can call or text.

Not trying to start an argument, and I would use push with gmail if it were available, but I'm not sure what the fascination is.

Nuevasync. It's $25 a year and you get push Gmail through an exchange server. The service works perfectly for me with very few limitations and the customer service is phenomenal. I would consider staying with then if google released their own exchange-based solution just because of how responsive and committed they are to any technical issue I might have.
