Has anyone tried to contact Google regarding these issues?

Better yet, would it even be worth it?

I'm also just curious - why do people care so much about push email? I mean, I use gmail more than mm even though the latter pushes. It's just not that important to me to get my email *instantly.* For work, Ok (have a bb for that), but messages from my friends and family really don't need my immediate attention. And if they do, they can call or text.
For me, I use mail as the alternative to SMS when I communicate with my friends and family back in Japan. Their SMS system is totally screwed and is not compatible with the one in the rest of the world. Push mail helps me get back to them instantly. (Yes, they expect to mail/text back and forth like table tennis!)

As for GPush, it seems to be working for now. I got mail from their support saying they'd just uploaded new code onto their server that should stabilize the notification issues, and at about the same time, I started getting GPush notifications. I'll keep my finger crossed.

Not trying to start an argument, and I would use push with gmail if it were available, but I'm not sure what the fascination is.
It's very useful for urgent/important messages. I have selective gmail push turned on for family and close friends (and I have manual fetch for everything else). I sometimes get a ton of email, and it's very nice not being interrupted by push for the unimportant stuff. I also have another email account that I tell others to use (only) for urgent messages -- everything sent to that account gets pushed, too. Not only does this help to limit interruptions, but it also lengthens my battery life.

Weird...after I made that last post I got two push notifications...

big brother is watching. lol

i get pushed gmail flawlessly.... i dont get why everyone says they cant...??

i get notif within 30 seconds, once it hits gmail. and i have it set to manual fetch. and this is even in locked mode.

well screw yahoo push.. I give up.

Made an account earlier today and nothing.. just fing retarted! no emails nothing.

Quick question tho, i went in to delete the yahoo account, and i set my gmail back to fetch instead of manual to 15minuts.. Once i came out of the settings screens the phone made a chime like a msg was received or something but there actually wasnt anything, any idea what that could of been?

Apple needs to implement it - not google

they need to add IMAP IDLE (not true push bit it does appear to work like push to the end user)

This is how the palm pre has push gmail, we just need apple to implement IDLE

25$ does not sound worth it for push email in my opinion...

But as far as Gmail push is concerned, I do believe it's up to Apple to implement it, not google. (You can get push gmail to a Blackberry device..)

Actually its up to google. Google could push just like yahoo does. But google has chosen not to implement it. Its in googles court not Apples.

Also I use http://msgpush.com/ Doesn't work exactly how you would expect. But it works great everytime. O and its free.

Yup. Given how Google has already implemented contacts and calendar synchronization via a microsoft exchange interface, they just need to finish it off with the gmail exchange interface (and, while you can enable the gmail exchange interface today, it doesn't work, as mentioned by google support documents).

I imagine that Apple is not likely to implement IMAP IDLE, because (1) the iPhone already has push via the exchange interface, and (2) google is, technically, a competitor (to both the iPhone and MobileMe). However, I'd love to be wrong on this. :D

Exactly and the fact other email services offer push just fine. Like Yahoo, and msgpush.com

you clearly don't understand what push is. please explain if you have manual fetch on, how are you getting any notifications whatsoever without opening the mail app to check?

how is IMAP IDLE different from IMAP. I know google has IMAP for the iphone.

IMAP doesn't necessarily have anything to do with push. IMAP means that your emails are stored on a server, compared with POP where they're stored locally on your machine. When you use IMAP with Google you're accessing your data from the Google server.

IMAP Idle (in a very simple sense) is a technique whereby there is a passive connection maintained between the device and the server, so that when you get an email, you get a nearly instantaneous notification. That being said, maintaining that connection can have the effect of draining the battery, so it's a give and take relationship at best.

I'm using the PUSHMAIL app and it has worked FLAWLESSLY with GMAIL for the last week. I have 6 GMAIL accounts and it hasn't missed a message yet. It notifies you with the email header and the first few lines of text (it doesn't download the entire message to the inbox). Usually the message itself hasn't reached the inbox yet because PUSHMAIL is only uses the notification but as soon as you open that email account the mail is downloaded. Of course true gmail push would be best but this has been my best workaround. It also works with ANY email account where you can forward incoming emails.

I know this is about native push, but right now I'm beta testing an app called PushGmail which actually works quite well. Notifications are received within seconds after sending. No details from the developer on when a final release will be available or what the price point will be, but I can tell you that when it is available it will be extremely reliable.

Pushmail 2.99 in the app store. Enough said

Application notifications does not make push email. Until there is native push email for gmail on the iPhone, there isn't real support for push gmail. I don't care to receive popups on my phone. I want my email delivered immediately into the mail app. The Pushmail app does not do that.

That app is a bucket of fail. I installed it, and was stumped as to why I recieved no emails, for a few hours this morning. I thought it was just a slow day, but I fired up the mail app to be sure, and low and behold - 18 unread emails just sitting in the inbox!

it works perfectly for me...

Everyone wants that but it doesn't exist (yet). The best alternative right now is the PUSHMAIL app. Besides, as soon as you open your inbox after being notified by PUSHMAIL the mail is downloaded so it's pretty quick. Also the iPhone native mail app gives no "mail waiting" indication even when it finally does support gmail push ... at least this app gives you visual notification.

You should remember Gmail push app out there is not a true push. It is a wanna be at best big time when compared to Blackberry push.

I have on my blackberry Gmails app which sorta pushes it to my phone but lets compare it to my Gmail put though the BIS servers. Same phone.

Sent the email from a yahoo account to gmail. With in seconds my phone dings to tell me that I have a new email on the push apps. The gmail app 10 min later still has not notifid me I have a new email..

Apple and even yahoo push does not match the speed of blackberrys push.

Since copy and paste and MMS this is basically the last thing that iPhone users are complaining about. :p Haha

Come on Apple! We know your cloud can handle our IDLE for Gmail! :(

Maybe Google will get Google Sync up for Gmail as well

For those that don't know, it's an Active Sync server for your Google Calendar and Google Contacts so they can get Pushed to your phone. If Google switches the email over to this as well we'll have it.

Personally... I don't even care that much about push gmail. I have my push Ymail and I tell people that if they need me fast send it there (I don't have SMS). Also I have gmail forward anything with "Urgent" to my Ymail so I don't miss anything important. Other than that... My Contacts and Calendar I have switched to Fetch. If I'm at my laptop updating a contact or event... I'm probably not going to need to double check it in less than 15 min. I think I can remember what I just did for at least that long :p

For those mentioning it, GPush has worked fine for a while now. Still though, I really want actual Push from GMail.
