Going on a Cruise with my MBP

Here is my list so far:

MacBook Pro
Power Adapter
iPod
iPod Connector
Headphones
Camera
Card Reader
Case
Remote
OSX discs just incase

Have you ever been on a cruise?

When on earth are you going to find time to use your computer?

I never take mine because I don't have the time nor want to use it, I need the break from it.

I have large cards for my camera so storage of pictures is not an issue.

Also, with a MBP it would cause more stress then its worth.

I wouldn't bring anything except the MacBook Pro and security lock The rest of the stuff could be easily stolen if it's not in your sight. Not to mention most of those items are small too. You should keep the MacBook Pro with you all the time.

Like other posters have said, be careful with your stuff. I'd definitely bring one of those locking cables, as well as set up some software to track down your MBP just in case it goes missing. I've always brought a laptop on my vacations, and you just have to be careful with where you leave it. Do cruises have internet nowadays? I haven't been on one in almost 10 years.

I wouldn't bring anything except for the camera and the iPod. The point of a cruise is to get away from things for a while to relax, and bringing the computer might not allow you to enjoy the cruise.

Yes cruise ships now have wirless access. Expensive And what kind of software can track it down.

I would just bring a security lock, and make sure your homeowners policy covers stolen computers out of the States.

I so understand this question!!! Anybody that asks why take your MB on a cruise is a little unclear of the concept of being a Mac addict.
I took my MBP on 3 cruises. Wireless was $$$$$ and rarely used. But there was something very relaxing about staring at the ocean, or going to the martini bar and typing away.
You won't be able to sit with it outside, though. It's too hot and sunny. A flash drive is useful if you need to backup, and yes, I hid the MBP in my room.
Along with the flash drive, maybe USB or Firewire cables.

Bring your iPod so you can listen to music while relaxing by the pool, camera so you can take pictures, all the accessories you need for that.

If you really feel the need to bring the MBP, bring it, the power cord, and a security lock. You definitely don't need the OS X disks lol.

The only reason I would take my macbook on a cruise, is to watch DVD's on the long commute you might have to and from the boat.
I took a Western Carribean cruise out of Tampa (communting from Seattle) and it was a good 20 hours each way, once all said and done. Once I got on the boat, I locked it in the safe, and didnt see it again, until the cruise was done. Ok....i take that back. I did check from time to time, to make sure it was still in there.

Oh, and leave the OSX disks behind. The thought of reloading an OS, while on a cruise is just....wrong.

Why not take it? I've been on plenty of cruises and I've had no trouble keeping my stuff safe. Besides, It's a notebook it's kind-of intended for travel.

I took my PB to Cancun. There was a safe in the room that it fit in nicely, and left plenty of room for our other stuff - passports, iPod, etc. I downloaded my pictures each day, chatted with my daughter each night, and kept up with you guys. I also played music in the room, as low-quality as it is...

Perhaps for the original poster, he needs a MBP to get a gf?

I also don't see the point, why the trouble? It is not like you will end up using that computer for more than 15 minutes to check a few emails during the entire cruise. Might as well just set an auto responder and enjoy the break, rather than worrying about it getting stolen and stuff.

Be very careful, the safes in most hotels/ships will fit a laptop, but not a widescreen laptop like the mbp. Do not leave it out, people wonder around all day and the doors are generally left or propped open during cleaning. At least in a hotel there are less people wondering around, but on a cruise ship...

I will not be bringing mine on the cruise, even though I did last year (pc laptop that could fit) Just got one of those things that lest me download from my camera to my ipod, so I can take lots o pics.

I don't think that bringing your OS X discs with you is that "over board". If you bring your laptop with you I'm sure you intend to use it. If for some reason you have a crash or something and need to do a clean install to get back up and running then the disc's sure will come in handy.

As far as security goes I'd get one of the security locks and try to place the computer in somewhat hidden place.

I'd bring a surge protector with you as there is no telling how clean of power the boat provides. I use the Tripp-Lite Traveler 100Bt. Its small and made to be portable.

I brought my PowerBook along on our cruise to Alaska, and was glad I did. I downloaded pictures from the digital camera nearly every day so we could sit and watch a slideshow most evenings.

Internet access on board cruise ships is expensive and frustratingly slow, to the point of being completely ineffective.
