Some would call me my love for Apple obsessive, but even I would recommend for people to do the sensible thing and be prepared. Its not like you are going to be carrying around an extra 25 pounds.

if you need to bring your osx discs with you on a cruise in case of a crash then you're doing too much on that computer. it's called a vacation, so if you're just going to run your computer for work, then you might as well send me the tickets to the cruise.

I honestly can't see the need for OSX discs?? If you are going to prepare for the eventuality of a complete crash that wipes the OS, what else are you gonna have to prepare for? A spare laptop incase the MBP one dies? A spare power adaptor in case your main one dies as well? A mouse in case the trackpad stops working? Another keyboard incase one of your keys pops off?

I'd say don't take the OSX discs at all; I wouldn't take the laptop either and just go and enjoy the holiday.

If you really needed extra storage for photos, get one of those portable drive enclosures that has flash card slots that let you copy everything off them onto the drive, and sort out the photos off that drive when you get home.

theres a difference in your statements though.

Taking OSX with you is EASY to take, EASY to prepare for and FREE(because they come with the compuer)

A spare laptop is HARD to take, HARD to prepare for and COSTLY.

Why carry a spare tire in your car? Tires don't break that often

Why carry an emergency first aid kit around in a car? Unless your like EMS, theres no dire need to.

Why have a spare key to your house? Not like your constantly forgetting them.

Why have copies of important documents? Not like your constantly losing them?

By all means bring the Laptop, it will come in handy, but I too don't see the need for the OS Discs??? I've never *HAD* to re-install either of my Macs, I've done it because I wanted to, or there was one or 2 little things that were messed up and I couldn't figure out how to fix them :). It's not like windows where the whole OS just dies randomly and you HAVE to re-install, If your Mac can't make it a few weeks without a re-install I think it's time to call AppleCare :).

So, by your logic, I am going to take out the Spare Tire in my car because I never need it and it just weighs me down.

I just want someone to provide a good reason why they don't carry their disks and what the big deal is, other then there confidence in the OS.

Right, I am not saying he is going to need them, but what I am saying is that people should be carrying them around just like a spare tire.

Its ok, one day one someones computer will break and I will get a PM that I was right or one that says they wished they listened to me lol.
