Jailbreak,unlock, O2 PAYG SIM

Will cost you £19.58 .Will include 600 mins talktime (UK any network) , 600 txts if bought in store ,1200 if bought online.And would include Unlimited wifi OR web.


As for wifi , in McDonalds, as far as I know even if you dont have the wifi bolton you can still use it, you just have to log on every time.In London you will find free wifi hotspots everywhere.Personally I would go with unlimited web bolt on .

Was your iPhone MAC address not one of the selected, for use with the Unlimited cloud usage?

And, in theory so and so will tell you that 1Mb will let you see 100 pages or something however in the real world data usage is all relative. It really depends on what you want to do. :)
 
If I were to jailbreak my phone, where would i get this chip? I'm in New York.
 
I travel to Europe quite often. Here's what I do...

Purchase 50GB Data plan for $59.95.
Turn Data Roaming OFF.
Turn Push OFF
Set mail to MANUAL check.
Reset usage settings to zero, and monitor data usage when enabling roaming to use the data service.
Make sure to turn data roaming OFF after you use the internet.
WiFi is ALWAYS a good friend. :)

Doing this, I've always been safe, and not charged any extra.
 
I jailbroke my 3G for use in Asia over a two month period and it was awesome. I changed SIM cards in every country and everything worked flawlessly. Having GPS + DATA (e.g. Google Maps) was extremely helpful.

If you want to use YOUR phone overseas, just jailbreak. It's a simple process and won't hurt anything. When you get back home you can always restore and erase any previous jailbreak -- it really is a win/win situation.
 
Daremo, you make the most sense so far. Sixty bucks is not too much to enhance a week's vacation. Heck that's two pints over there. :)

He'd definately be able to pick up a PAYG sim at either Gatwick or Heathrow.
 
I tested all five uk networks on an iphone in London. The best network for data speed and coverage is three. £5 for 2gb a month.

As far as costs of things, i find the UK and Ireland are a little more pricey than France and Italy, the only other European countries I've been to.
Enough so to merit a weak attempt at humor. :eek:
Still when you are traveling everything seems expensive unless you're going from New York to Arizona.

The airport, huh? That gets my wife involved. She's going to want to get the heck out of there and into a rental. I would like to pay to have the thing shipped here so as to be ready to go. I contacted one seller and they were not helpful.

As long as Im going into a phone store, can i rent an iphone for a week? It would have to be cheaper than the ATT data plan of $59 which is limited and doesnt cover calls.
The jailbreak thing looks iffy for me. Right off the bat i see a guy using red snow complain that they can no longer use any USB devices on his Mac, let alone the iphone. I've had a lot experience with Macs but when the word "directory" comes up my eyes roll back.
 
I bought a new iPhone a while ago and was forced, by O2, to buy a SIM card (for £10) that I didn't need. It has £10 of credit, obviously, and unlimited data for a year (I think).

If you PM the address of your hotel in England, I'll post it there and it'll be waiting for you when you arrive.

Just an idea. Maybe you can do a little research to see whether it will work...

Wow. Thanks for offer but "we" decided jailbreak is not an option and will go with the ATT $59 data plan instead.

You don't need wifi or cellular to get GPS coordinates. You won't get Google maps, but just wait 10 or so minutes under an open sky for the GPS to find the satellites, and the Compass app will show you your Lat/Lon coordinates.
 
We've been back a couple of weeks and i thought I'd post a followup.
was going to wait for my bill but that will take a while.
According to ATT website, I used 32.74 of the 50MB data plan i paid $59 for while roaming England. We went from London to Cornwall and back. I think a lot of that usage came from carelessly charging the phone in car while roamign was not turned off.
The iPhone was sort of indispensible since as I said we met up with my niece in London. the tube service turned out to be just as reliable as in NYC, meaning service disruptions altered our plans a few times but with the iphones (she had her father's, which she was now using on a UK plan).
Plus there was the US Open, and Yankee and Jet scores we had to keep track of.
The trip was lovely and the iphone played a big part in that. THanks to all for helping. :)
 
I use my iPhone in Germany and Austria and just use wifi and SMS. texting is pretty cheap check the rates it's a good way to keep in contact with and cheaper than voice.
 
Thanks for the follow-up. Glad to know your roaming worked out OK.

I also used international roaming for the first time a few weeks ago. But on O2 in continental Europe, it was £3/MB. I used about 700kb for two days where I didn't have free wi-fi, and they only charged me £2.
 
Three pounds a MB!!!???

I never really ran into free wi-fi and certainly didnt want to spend vacation looking for it. Even in airport, when i got a lot of wi-fi nibbles, they all eventually asked for passwords.

By the way, cornwall was great. We went to Tintangel, St. Ives and Penzance. My wife used to live over there and we sort of followed the vacations she took as a kid. Plus she did all the driving. I do the driving over here.

£3/MB yes it is a lot - but worth it if you just have to get a few emails over a few days. You can buy a plan as well before going abroad, that would make it cheaper, and worthwhile for longer trips.

Glad you enjoyed Cornwall, September was also great here weather-wise.
 
buy a cheap prepaid phone when in England. Assuming they have that over there. I have an unlocked phone (not iPhone) that I use when travelling overseas. I simply purchase a sim card over there and slap it in.

Yep, you can buy a bog standard motorola or nokia with £10 credit for £20 in the likes of Carphone warehouse. They have shops everywhere. At the end you have a workable phone and you can flog it on ebay for a £10 and you've not lost anything.

Seriously though switch off data roaming and use wifi.
 
Jumping on the "can you help me with this" train...

I'm going to London & Paris, 5 days each. I'd really like to have a number before I leave NY. Can I buy an o2 SIM from EBay, add the data bolt on and then add the 10MB data roaming bolt on for the Paris portion? ? Can I do that with this or this?
