Good bye ipad hello gorgeous (aka 13 MBA)

I gave the iPad a try. I truly tried to like it but I hit it's boundaries every time I used it. Great toy, bad tool.

Got $550 for the iPad on Craigslist, then sold my 2009 white MB for a awesome $700. Took my winnings, and ordered a 13 MBA.

I am smitten. This thing flies! I am surprised how fast his thing moves for such a puny processor. What a screen, what a design. Love it.

I see myself keeping this machine for years just like my original Macbook Pro.

Any one else ditch the ipad for MBA? If your on the fence better sell now before they announce the new one.

Heck I "ditched" my iPad for a MBP! Sure a not as light and no touch screen but the power difference is worth it. I know what you mean by boundries though, somethings you flat out couldn't do and if you could you had to find some app for 99cents or go through a bunch of hoops.

I agree just traded mine in as well as my imac for it 13 mba ultimate should be getting wednesday or thursday. I think for me the combination mba and iphone is perfect too many limitations with ipad. could not justify both imac and mba so just went ahead and traded both.

I had an iPad, and as you said, I kept running into boundaries even though i really tried to like it. Got myself an 11" MBA which is perfect. Has the power of a desktop-OS, but is light in form factor like the iPad.

Here's another one who moved from an iPad to an MBA. I got the 11 incher. Like the poster above, I just running into too many limitations with the iPad. Plus a lot of what I did on my iPad I could already do on my iPhone. I've still got the iPad, but the MBA stays with me most of the time. The iPad doesn't really leave the house.

Yeah I just sold my iPad on ebay for about $740. Hopefully I'll order mine in about a week or two. cant wait!!

I completely concur. All of the people who talk on this forum about ditching their iPad for a MBA were trying to get notebook-like productivity out of a media consumption device. As far as media consumption goes, iPad is the winner.

If you can only afford one device, then it would be a stupid choice to go with the iPad. Those who love their iPads are not the ones using it as a notebook replacement.

If my iPad were a notebook replacement, it would be the worst notebook I ever used.

I'm not bashing the iPad. But for me it felt like 65% of a computer most of the time. I needed 85%. I think that incrementally it will get fast enough, and smart enough to reconsider one. For now it is just an overgrown touch.

The ipad is great at doing what it does. Right now I need something that I can produce on, and wow is the air great for on the run. It feels like there is nothing in my bag just like the with ipad. But it runs Office, and allows me to charge my phone from it's larger battery.

Couldn't be happier.

If I could justify having a 27" imac, iphone 4, Air, and an iPad I would but that seemed a bit much. It's not the money. I try to live a simple life and having all that overlap is a bit gluttonous IMO.

More power to people who are happy with their ipad 1s. If I had children, or was a gamer then I would have kept it for sure.

I disagree with that statement. Perhaps for you it was a toy, but for me, I found it indispensable as a tool. It allows me to get a lot of work done without the need of lugging a laptop around, or take notes with pen and paper, only to have no categorization of my notes, making any searching impossible.

I see a lot of people in Shenzhen with iPads and I ask them how they like them. They all say they love them. It is a very hot item in China. I like a keyboard and a way to protect the screen but I also own an iPad. Maybe they will make touch screens for MacBook Air then we will have the best of both worlds.

come on..fess up.......you secretly wish you could have kept both since they serve two purposes.

main thing is your happy...the air is great machine but so is the iPad...just wasn't your type of machine.

Flash would be of course nice to have, but for me more important is nothaving to refresh pages all the time as I return to them. I know that the limiting factor is the iPad's memory and that the new model won't have this issue as often as the current one has. I am also temptet by the Macbook Air but I don't want to sell my iPad. The only problem is that the Macbook Air would really be a luxury item for me as I don't really need it. I can see using it a lot when at home (where I also have a Mac Pro and an iPad), but I wouldn't take it with me when at work, because I have a windows laptop from my company which I have to use (I am an MS Consultant). Having the iPad with me all the time satisfies all of my needs. Having said that I am really tempted by the great design of the Macbook Air.

yeah I know but I got it as a gift. Thought I could work around it but I used it less and less so I sold it. I just think it's ridiculous that it didn't have it in the first place. My phone is more capable for god sakes.

I wouldn't take it with me when at work, because I have a windows laptop from my company which I have to use (I am an MS Consultant).

I too am required to haul around my company provided laptop. I am going to experiment with a vnc solution where it looks like I am logging in with the company laptop but am really telecommuting from the air. I have a 4g clearspot so I could always log in.

I also have enough sway with the IT guys that I could probably get a VPN set up if I did a boot camp partition.

We are going on a 3 city trip next month, and being able to leave the 7 lb monster at home would be a relief to my shoulder.

I took a few trips with the ipad. and the battery was amazing. However I couldn't imagine ever getting any work done on it. Looking forward to just having one lightweight device to commute/travel with.

She said it seems like the ipad should have come before the iphone. It doesn't innovate in any way it's just a larger version of a existing product. Usually Apple shirks things in this case they just gave a iphone a thyroid problem, and called it done.

You will need to pry the iphone from my cold dead hand, but the ipad needs a bit more time in the oven.

I totally agree. With the 1st gen iPad, there is both an overlap with some of the tasks we perform on Macs, and a barrier we hit with some projects, where an app is more useful (due to form factor and features) on one than the other.

As it stands now, I really do use the iPad as a giant iPod Touch, and it comes in handy for travel. Of course, early adopters like me know we're guinea pigs to a certain extent, and Apple always does a great job at noting how people use the devices, and almost always addresses needs and issues in future gens.

I keep wavering on eBaying my iPad and getting an Air, but I'll probably keep it because, as C64 says, its capabilities are different than a Mac, and within those parameters, I do get a lot of use from it.
