I had both devices but sold the iPad recently. Having two machines didn't make sense for me...for web surfing and reading, iPad is great. It's also great for editing photos on the fly and playing iPhone/iPod games on a big screen. It's great to consume content but weak at creating them which my MBA 13 is great at.

I agree that is serves different purposes...if you need both and afford it, having two makes sense and great but if you need only one that serves both purposes, it was the MBA for me.

But I do sometimes miss the instant instant application usage the iPad offerred such as news, games, photo editing, etc...If I wanted something I just had to touch an app, instead of various clicks...but I guess this is where the Mac Store comes in...and Lion in the near future.

Anyways...I'm loving my MBA and loved (?) my iPad...

I'm seriously considering trading my iPad for an 11" MBA.

Reasons: I really hate the iPad virtual keyboard, no flash

Concerns: The iPad never gets hot or even warm. What about the MBA? The iPad battery life is fantastic. What does the 11" MBA really get?

Questions: I'm thinking of getting the lowest spec MBA but I could be persuaded to increase the RAM to 4GB. Will this significantly increase performance? Will it affect the heat? Will it affect battery life? Is it true that the iPad's screen is better?

You have the right concerns. The reason I got the Air is because I couldn’t get certain projects done on the iPad that I need to do—e.g., extended pieces of writing, clipboard management, and real multitasking. (I also got it because damn it’s a sexy machine. I like working on it.)

However, the low CPU (?) on my bottomline 11” Air does make it run hot sometimes—fan comes on—when I‘m downloading lots of videos. It’s not overheating, but when I uploaded a YouTube video today using ScreenFlow, the fan was on the entire time. I guess that’s natural.

But anyway, I still don’t want to get rid of my iPad because it’s nothing better for reading documents and ebooks, which what I mainly do with it. I really cut down on purchasing apps for the iPad because honestly I use less than a third of the apps downloaded on my iPad.

I think what you will like also about the Air is how responsive it is. Quick startup and no dang beach ball—so far for me anyway.

And finally, if you do decide to hang onto the iPad, you can use it as a second screen for the Air (Air Display app.)

I think you made the right decision. I haven't bought an ipad because I can't seem to find a reason to have one. I have my iPhone while on the go and also my MBA thats pretty portable as well.

Download coolbook if you haven't already. Should help with heat and extend battery life under load. Worked great for me.

Once I saw app store was coming to OSX I returned the iPad and went with a new AIR...the ipad was cool but having an iphone 4 I felt like the ipad was just an oversized version of iphone. I would have kept it but couldn't afford both so one had to go!
I just don't think you can go wrong with MacBook Air. Its such a complete laptop for its size, its always going to be useful.
