I think most of the design based publications have gone downhill over the last several years, the biggest slide being Grafik magazine. It was condemned to the slippery slope once a decision was made to sex-up Graphics International.

I get a bunch:
Communication Arts
HOW
PRINT
STEP inside design
Layers
Photoshop User
Design Graphics
CREATE (localized design magazine...though they have it in other areas)
Lurzers Int'l Archive
At the newsstand I buy Computer Arts most months, and also Photoshop Creative. From time to time I'll buy CMYK but...eh...I really don't find it that much of a "must have"
I find something of value in each but if I had to choose just 2...it would probably be Communication Arts and PRINT. The PRINT annuals (just got mine in the mail yesterday) are don't miss issues. Expensive. But worth it.
I don't look to HOW for great design examples, but it does have some good information on the business of design.
