I wonder why people were thinking that. Could it be because a "leak" came out of Apple it could be priced at $1000? Then when it's announced that it'll be half that (but not really), we're supposed to be blown away by it?

Come on people. You're being toyed with.

That said, I think it's a cool gadget, and will probably buy one, but not because the price sounds too good to be true. It's because I like toys and I can afford it.

Hindsight is 20/20 eh? Your entire comment is based on the fact you think you knew what the device would be and what it could be priced at.

Easy to act like you knew what it would be now, I admitted I thought $699 was a likely price point, still wrong but I don't pretend to know what the "Apple tablet" was going to be or the price as you suggest.

Personally, I think that IF we see any change in pricing it will either be announced before the launch or it will be very aggressive educational pricing.

Did those articles only mentioned parts cost or include manufacturing costs. What other overhead did they include in their basis for stating that apple is realizing 42 profit margins. Does that include the R&D funds being expended to create the device?

Most of the time, many of these types of articles are incomplete at best, misleading at worst. They fail to take into account apple's need to account for overhead through out the entire pipeline, i.e., paying for parts, manufacturing, marketing, salesmen salaries, etc.

I seriously doubt that apple is having such a huge profit margin at least without any proof of documentations to back up that claim.

The 40%+ margin is something that Apple achieves at a corporate level. It would be surprising then if they wanted one of their product lines to generate less than that. With an initial product launch they may be willing to stimulate the interest (potentially) through an impact on margin, but eventually they would want the product line to contribute in a meaningful way to their corporate margin target.

so why don't all of us just wait and then Apple will lower the price because the amount of sales will be low. Together all of us can still be early adopters but save a few bucks as well.

Good idea :D

To the gadget geeks/freaks that love all things Apple and all kinds of gadgets. Price really doesn't matter. Its not about price, it's about owning something first. People don't camp out for 5 or 6 nights on the sidewalk and then suddenly a month later thin OMG I should have waited! Sorry you cannot afford one at the current prices but no one is going to wait so you can save money.

I dont' know what Apple's "ideal" sales figures are, but nothing any analysts says will convince those who plan on buying the device to wait 60, 90 or 120 days to save 100 bucks. If you would have followed Apple over the past 10 years you would see how they price their product, iPad is no different. They will "stimulate" sales by lowering a price or adding features. iPhone is a perfect example of that, and if I recall in 2007 when they dropped the price 200 bucks after 30 days, they also issued credits back to the early adopters that paid the higher price.

Either way the early adopters won't lose out. If it's slow at $499 and they goto $399 after 30 days they will issue rebates just like on the original iPhone.

I claim the first paragraph only. The rest wasn't mine . . . hence the quotes ;)

The price doesn't matter to me at all.

I've determined I don't want the 3g service and need atleast 32, most likely 64gb of memory. I have the cash for both, so may get both to play with.

The price is acceptable to me as is. They could drop it, they could raise it, they could do anything, I don't care. The here and now has the prices as outlined, and I'm good with that.

I was expecting a $1000 device based on Iphone OS, so anything less than that is a bonus.

I'll probably get the 64 gig for me and a 32 for my wife. That way at night I can keep my MBP in my backpack.

I think the report of the price softening was to ease investor worries if the iPad is not a success.

That being said, I have a strong suspicion that a 128 gb iPad might be released around back to school or the holidays with a $100-150 drop i price for the 16 gb model.

Also look for subsidized 3G models from ATT ($200-300 off).

You make a valid point :apple:

You make a valid point :apple:

Not really. The ATT data rates are quite cheap, no room to subsidize. If you want to pay more for your data, sure you can then get a subsidy, but it would be a false economy. You would probably then pay about $240 more in data charges over 2 years to save $150 and you would be locked in. That is how "subsidies" work.

I don't think you will see a real (as opposed to potential student deals) price drop for a year, you might save $100 next year. I will likely get mine as soon as I can get my hands on one, you are free to wait.

I have no problem paying full price to start using one right away as opposed to sitting on the sidelines waiting up to a year to save a $100.

Yes, thats if they start off slow. If they start off fast they might bring the price up a bit:rolleyes:

Were you being sarcastic? If not it's highly unlikely that Apple would raise the price . . . perhaps come out with another model that costs more, maybe but raise the price of an existing product . . . . no :p

No no, I wasn't being sarcastic, though if it is a success Apple might do more with it, ya'no?

What will you achieve getting a 32 gb and 64gb iPad?

And we might get double digit percent returns on our home values every quarter, too...

I'm not chancing it and getting mine from the get-go.
