I'll spare you the story of how I came to want a mac, how I waited months for the new releases, and how sit here shocked now that the new models are very unimpressive. All I have to say is goodbye mac. I came here knowing my premium amount of money going into your pockets would get me a premium system, now all I see is an overpriced downgrade with wimpy graphics, and an already outdated CPU.

I'll be ordering a Dell XPS 435, and though I'm sure Apple will not miss the $1,800 with their name on it, its the only stand I can take against this botched update...

Is anyone else giving up on getting an iMac?

It's a laptop for your desk. That's how it has been for years. I don't know why you thought otherwise...

Sorry to see you go, though.

It just amazes me as well that people really think apple is going to suddenly make super high end computers across the board.

I understand that it uses laptop components, and uses them well, however, the last remake of the iMac was impressive and forward thinking for its time, this one is disappointing and lackluster, and thats just not good enough for me.:(

What exactly are you going to use it for that a core 2 duo cannot handle?

I'm a freelance photographer, and the core 2 duo can handle my work, it has (I used to own the 2.8ghz model) in the past. But when I could get an i7 system with 6gb of ram and a 750 gb hd, and a (lower quality) 24" screen for $1,500 or a core 2 duo with lower specs in everything but the screen for $1,800 it just doesnt seem worth it, I don't think the sleek design is worth $300 more.

Goodbye, you wont be missed :)

Hey, i made a huge impact in the whole five months i was here.... I'm even a regular! That must mean I'll be missed :D

The Dell is nice, but I'm not sure what it is you're using your system for that the iMac can't handle. My 15 month old 24" is wall-mounted, silent, does everything I throw at it, and is as unobtrusive as something with a 24" screen could be.

Of course, I don't game. But to compare a full-body desktop with a separate monitor to a one-piece wall-mountable unit isn't a fair comparison. The iMac has maybe 1/4 to 1/3 the total volume of the Dell plus monitor.

Ah, well at least you have some actually reasoning for it instead of being against "the principles of it".

Sad to see you go.:)

Maybe not... but OSX is ;)

Oh spare me you Dell shill. If you wanted value then the previous generation iMacs go a nice price cut today. But I don't think you are a Mac aficionado anyway because once you go Mac you don't want to go back. I'd rather use a 8 year old Mac than a brand new Dell... especially with Vista.

I do a fair amount of photoshop work and even the mac mini i have with 2.5Gb ram is fine.

Even though snow leopard is coming ... software like finalcut and photoshop won't take a major advantage of it for at least one revision (cs5 anyone?)

I'm still torn right now .... i want an iMac and the PC builder in me knows what's achievable with £1600 these days (me and a work mate are always spec'ing and re-spec'ing machines) but i can't bring myself to use Windows much longer .... i bought macmini 9 months ago and i've loved it ... its doing my head in looking at the new macs :)

i agree that osx for me has always been the reason to be here

i'm a photog as well, and my imac 2.0 coreduo white worked just fine even with photoshop cs through rosetta

at this point i've upgrade to a macpro 8 core (about 6 months old now)

couldn't you possibly pick up a second hand mac pro quad core for around that same price (as the xps) and then not have to deal with Dell or Microsoft?

just a thought

i wish you luck back out in the blue screen wilderness

(not to mention all the snubbing from snobs in the creative arts who will think you're a madman for working photoshop through windows)

:)

Hmmmmmm..... not necessarily! :D But we all have to buy what meets our needs and wants. Apple doesn't build computers to satisfy everyone. No one does. Hope you find what you're looking for!

I hate to say it but Apple doesn't want you OP, a freelancer that needs horsepower who can't afford the Mac Pro, they want average users who don't tax the processor ( IM, email. internet, home movies, garagebands, basic office stuff) or professional users buying the Pro line. Sadly you kind of slip through the target demographic crack right into the hands of Dell.

When windows7 comes out, I'll be right there with you OP on my HP touchsmart:D

Some Anarchist you are... whatever happened to 'All Property is Theft'?

Surely you should be kicking in the Apple Store windows and stealing the damn things.

Kids...

I can see where the OP is coming from.

For me the operating system is the main thing I'm after at this point which led to me setting up a hackintosh after I sold my macbook in hopes of something better coming out. Since all else failed at least I got a lot for my macbook.

I'm not saying goodbye mac but I can see how one can come to that conclusion.

r I sold my macbook in hopes of something better coming out.

This behavior is amazingly common on these forums and I CANNOT for the life of me figure out why?

Why would anyone deprive themselves of a computer in the hopes that the next one will be somehow revolutionary?

With Mac, you are going to pay a premium for design and the OS. If you've used a Mac and you still think you'd be content with Windows. So long, enjoy fighting your computer.

I can only guess it's because they don't use their computer for anything critical. If you only play games and surf the web, you can do without one. If, however, you make money with your computer, there's no way you'd sell one until the replacement is up and running, fully configured. Some view a computer as a tool; some view it as a toy.

Well that makes sense, but then again I've seen a number of posts here with people in your second scenario, who then are outraged that they didnt get a huge improvement.

I just can't understand the logic in being outraged at something that happens 90% of the time.

Do you remember that Dell hardware is crap?
Apple hardware is one of the beset rated.
If you're going to get a PC at least get something like HP or Sony.

Did you forget one of the main differences?
THE OPERATING SYSTEM. To run OS X Leopard/Snow Leopard smoothly you don't need 6GB ram.
And if you're into photo editing I don't see why not a Mac.
