First off, vista has been around since 06, has apple really gone from 5% to 10% in just three years or was it part of a continuing trend?

Second, jobs is back in june, how that is a year without him ill never know.

I'm pretty sure that yes, the market share has doubled in that three years. Apple went from the 6th computer company around 4-5 years ago to being the 4th biggest one now.

And the rumor is that Jobs will be stepping down permanently due to his health. Time will tell.

I just think that it's funny that since Vista was released Apple has doubled their market share of the PC market from 5% to 10%.

The point is that despite all of the "problems" with Macs being overpriced, not as upgradeable, etc, they have still managed to sell very well.

The biggest challenge that Apple will be facing over the next year is the lack of his Jobsness at the helm and the fact that in a poor economy they are probably going to be selling far fewer machines.

P.S.

I'm in the market for a Mac, but I agree with some of the previous sentiments. It would be really nice if Apple would build something vaguely resembling a desktop that didn't sell for over $2000 and had upgradeable video, etc.

When you said it, you made it sound like Vista is the reason Apple's marketshare has grown. And as NT1440 stated, there are several incorrect statements in your post.

Where the hell are you getting your rumors?!
Surely not macrumors.com

Vista very well might be the reason for Apple's dramatically increasing Market share.

And no, I'm not making it up, here's their market share in 2006 (about 2%)

And here's their market share from just a month ago, nearly 10%

As far as the Jobs rumor goes, that's all I'm hearing from corporate contacts, that many assume he will need to leave for his health for longer than the current sabbatical.

And you believe Windows Vista is the reason for Apple marketshare increasing?

WAIT!! I FEEL SO DUMB NOW. I that is a good thing. Wouldn't it be a positive thing that Vista pissed people off so much that it got the to switch to Mac.

Microsoft holds the PC world ransom
and
Mac computers hold OSX ransom

pick your poison is my thought here....

I have worked with DOS, OS/2 and Windows for well..more years than I would like to count. When Vista came out I opted after reviewing it (for company business needs) to jump ship and go to Apple at home.

I will never buy any Microsoft operating systems and am quite happy about it for all the right reasons and perhaps for some of the loathing for Gates with his long history of yore, destroying competition that provided superior product.

As for Apple, OSX isn't perfect but certainly leaps and bounds ahead of XP and Vista. I am speaking strictly as an operating system and less about bells and whistles added that are not really part of an OS.

Hardware - I wont disagree with anyone that Apple plays some strange games where technology and pricing is concerned. What I do find where my money goes is to are systems that do their job, and far superior support than Dell or any other maker of PCs. The latter is a premium that typical users are faced with and pro users rarely require but nice that its there. As for iMacs, performance is to be expected and it is delivered in a sleek package. For hard core use, Mac Pro is splendid and thus, I have both and use them accordingly.

I cannot call myself a fan of Mac hardware as I too have my frustrations at times. The new Mac Mini probably sits on the top of my list for its price/performance ratio. However, for a typical user it is probably the premiere small footprint computer with a consistent usable OS. Dell and others may make fancier small units, but they are stuck with Vista which wastes the offering. Linux would be a better choice on those systems but alas, Linux is not ready for prime time for a typical computer user (though Ubuntu and a couple of other distros come close).

In short, one does pay a premium for Mac computers but they get decent support, excellent OS and a community which is akin to OS/2 - extremely supportive of each other.

That is my peanut thrown in the gallery.
