Does nuevasync require the $45 data plan?

Interesting question that I haven't heard before. The answer is that we don't require anything from you other than a compatible device that has a working Internet connection. Now, it may be that in order to avoid high usage charges you should have one kind of data plan over another, but that's between you and your cell carrier. Our service doesn't usually generate much traffic to your phone, but it's a function of what you store (e.g. if you have 2000 events in your calendar, we will go ahead and send them to your phone and that will generate quite a bit of network traffic).

I am in exactly the same boat - I've been trying to do this repeatedly since last night, but I'm struggling to see why NuevaSync is pleasing so many people because I just can not get it to work. I've tried everything people have suggested on forums and I'm now awaiting a response from NuevaSync. Mr Boreham, if you're out there...HELP!:(

Hi, we have had our share of growth problems in recent weeks. However
the service is running at present. We are still working to improve capacity
and reliability for our users. We can now see a reasonably detailed picture
of the reasons why people are not syncing, and have been addressing
each reason in order of priority (based on severity and number of affected
users). At present most users who are not succeeding in syncing are
either having some kind of configuration problem, or are hitting one of a
few peculiar problems we have with Google's API. We have implemented
several new features to address the configuration problems (for example
our web site can now test your configuration and display what we think
you need to have for settings in your phone). Today we are fixing what we
believe to be the last of the Google API problems. So we're heading in a
positive direction. We also have a much bigger server being delivered tomorrow.
We project that we will need that in a week or two if the
user numbers keep growing at the current rate.

We also recently posted a FAQ page here : http://www.nuevasync.com/faq.html

when signing up for this service I noticed that it used Microsoft exchange servers. For some reason I thought that you had to have the $45 data plan vs. the $30 data plan (U.S. At&t) to use microsoft exchange servers. I could be totally wrong here and I hope I am cause I started using it anyway. I like the over the air sync for my google calender.

Hi, it's not my role (or area of expertise) to interpret ATT's plan rules,
but based on the text on their web site they want the extra $15 if
you use the phone to send and receive data for business purposes
(the wording talks about corporate e-mail, intranet sites and so on).
Nowhere does it mention Exchange. And besides, we don't use
Exchange servers anyway.

So my best guess is that you do owe ATT the extra $15 if you use
our service for business use, but not if you don't (yes I know this
makes no sense and how could they possibly know the difference, but that's
probably why I'm not working for a phone company).

Plaxo

Give http://plaxo.com a quick look. Its free...

I use it to sync my work (Windows MS Outlook) contacts and calendar to my home Macs, but it can be used to sync with many different services.

For reference, my setup seems a little different than yours, but it works well with both Macs/PCs and Google:

Plaxo syncs contacts and work calendar from my work machine running Windows/Outlook to "main" Mac's iCal/Contacts at home.

Plaxo syncs contacts with all Mac's at home.

Spanning Sync ($25/year) syncs all home mac calendars using Google Calendar.

End result is work PC, all Mac's, and Google calendar are all sync'd. I could use Plaxo for everything, but I wanted my work-home sync setup with different rules than how my home machines were sync'd.

This service must be incredibly popular because I can't access the signup page at all - it keeps timing out on me.

I'm hopeful based on the thread posts that this will solve my iPhone Calendar to Google Cal syncing desires! :-D

---

UPdate - ok I successfully got an account set up and turned on access to my GCal. However, on my iPhone I keep getting a message saying the Exchange verification failed (this is after I passed the initial verification and have entered www.nuevasync.com as my server). As far as I can tell on the NuevaSync end, my account is set up correctly and I've checked for obvious typos etc in my iPhone exchange setup. Has anyone had this issue and if so, is it simply due to load/timeout? How do I test/force a sync? (I've tried the forced sync troubleshooting help on the nuevasync site and it didn't seem to fix the problem). Help! Thanks! :-D

Hi here. Unfortunately we had another server melt this evening, but we were able to deploy a new and much bigger machine in its place within 2 hours.

Regarding the question as to why you're not syncing, we have been
working on this problem in general (particularly bad for iPhone users
because Apple wanted to make the software so beautiful that it can't
ever report errors to the user). We are working on a solution to this
in general (you'll be able to check on our web site for sync status,
errors etc) but in the meantime you can e-mail us at support@nuevasync.com
and we can check on the server and figure out any problems.

Ive found what every ones looking for! NuevaSync.com
They have a free service(no app needs to be on the iPhone) that grabs your google calender and syncs it using MS exchange! Push works too!! you can sync down your main google calender and any google calender you have write access too. This is a god sent and works really well. I also added another calender to google cal for my work and have it syncing with outlook (my work uses oracle connector so I use a plug-in called ogg sync that syncs my work stuff with google cal)

Also syncs with google contacts (Back up your contacts first. It can blow away all your current contacts!)

read more about nuevaSync here:
http://beaugiles.net/blog/2008/07/u...leme-alternative-with-push-contacts-calendar/

Now its time to return my un opened MobileMe!

+1 Works Great!

I cannot sing nuevasync's praises enough. After some preliminary setup issues (which were due primarily to the sheer popularity of their service), I have my iPhone calendar syncing in real time with my google calendars, all 4 of them. Incredible. And most importantly, free!

The only down side is that because of limitations in Google's calendaring API, I still set up the majority of my appointments in GCal so I can categorize my appointments.

Also nuevasync allows contact syncing but I have not activated that yet because the Google Contacts API does not differentiate between suggested contacts and actual contacts, and I have no desire to pollute my Contacts app with thousands of junk contacts. Nuevasync is aware of the issue and will update their service to exclude the suggested contacts when Google makes it possible to do so. At that point, I will have a great service that controls dynamic updates to my two most important functions.

I haven't seen this mentioned, GoogleCal does have CalDAV support, meaning that iCal can subscribe to the calendars, giving read write access rather than read only when you subscribe to the calendar. If you set iCal to sync every minute, its better than MobileMe calendar sync.

Google has a great document on how to set it up in iCal. Its relatively easy.

Now my iCal, Address Book (has built in google sync), and my iPhones Calendar and Contacts are always in sync with Googles Servers. And without paying a penny thanks to NuevaSync.

I also used the demo of Spanning Sync to do the first sync from my local iCal calendars up to Google, since I wasn't using GoogleCal perviously.

The only problem here is you cannot write to your Google Calendar from your iPhone (via the calendar interface).. since it's a subscribed calendar.

not if you set the calendar to come over the air via NuevaSync. The only flaw is that the iPhone does not get multiple calendars, they all get merged.

The calendars are separated by color. You can pick to view all calendars or view a single one. FWIW I can't use NuevaSync, I already have an Exchange account set up for my job.

Finally decided to try it. Works great.

iPhone cal and google calendar sync perfectly. But now how do I sync ical, gcal, and iPhone cal? I'm seeing duplicates now when I go to iPhone's calendar and look under "all calendars" (one is from mobile me, other one is gcal)

Nuevasync is a godsend for me. I understand there are costs involved and that they will begin charging money for it. (unless they go the advertising route and i begin seeing sponsored local events in my iphone calendar..)

I just hope it doesn't cost too much. Let's face it, internet services are cheap. MobileMe is overpriced in my opinion - $120/year or $10/month is a good portion of the cost of my phone bill, and Apple doesn't have to build any infrastructure like cell towers except for server farms which can each handle millions of users.

It's interesting that Google doesn't already offer push services - it would seem trivial for them to implement something like this. Maybe Google doesn't actually develop their own technology; they just buy up companies whose cash flow is made possible by Google. Perhaps this is Nuevasync's business plan after all, and we don't have to worry about being charged for the service.

Hi again. While the notion of introducing sponsored events into people's
calendars is amusing (think "Eat Wheaties" at 7am), this is not something
we will ever do. Ever. Until people suggested this was our business plan
on various forums, the idea hadn't even occurred to us. Our specialty is
complex software, not thinking up cunning ways to make money (clearly!).

Although I haven't tried this myself, our users report that they can use iCal's CalDAV support to access gcal. Then, simply use Nuevasync in addition for your iPhone (iTunes will believe that your iPhone is syncing with Exchange and consequently not try to double-sync with iCal as well).

Spanning Sync is another way to get you iCal in sync.

Duh! Easier than it looks. Thanks!

I just have to remove the mobile me sync for calendar now and just use the caldav's from google.

Thanks again. :)

true, but NuevaSync's exchange calendar support doesn't appear to bring across separate calendars, but instead merges them all as one. Does your work exchange support multiple different calendars, or is it a limit of exchange?

Just want to add my praise for nuevasync. I've been using googlesync to keep my outlook calendar and google calendar synced, since I could only sync my iphone with outlook.

I have found little reason to even use outlook any longer with benefits of gmail and google calendar and now the wonderful syncing option of nuevasync to get everything to and from my iphone.

I would gladly pay for these services and am surprised that google doesn't already offer the option. Thanks nuevasync for a great service and the price is wonderful!

Duplicate Calendar Postings?

I am using NuevaSync and love it!
However, recently I noticed that my calendar on Google has duplicate postings of all my events! My iphone does not.

I think that when the iphone syncs with the calendar, it does not distinguish the different calendars and thus can't sync with each of them. Thus it syncs all events within the default calendar.

Is there a fix for this?

Thanks!

I am noticing it so far only for specific events that are within my synchronization period for past events. I keep deleting them from my gCal but they keep re-appearing. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for the duplication. And different events are duplicated on the iPhone vs. gCal. Weird.

Apologies in advance if this is a completely uninformed question...why not just interface directly with Google Calender, Google contacts, etc directly through the iPhone Safari browser? The only answer I can think of is that you are limited to working when you have cellular or WiFi service. Any other reasons? Thanks.

Gray67 - Mine are ALL of my events! It's become a bit annoying. I don't like to look busier than I really am! LOL!

dboreham - Safari is sooooo slow compared to having the calendar right at your fingertips! It's simply more productive to have the data already downloaded to a quick app.
