The Google Drive v47 for m1 is finally here!

Since I was using v46 beta and it automatically updated to v47. A security warning loop came out this morning. After a bit of workaround, I have found this method works for me.

Please following the troubleshooting section in the below page and google drive will run properly again.

Thanks for your post. This installation has been a total headache.
First, I can't update to v47. I think it happened once automatically but I had to reinstall many times and now I'm back to V46.
Any tips on forcing the update to v47???
Also, I've tried everything (i.e uninstall, reinstall, deleting library folder DriveFS, clicking the 2 boxes in the recovery mode reduced security box...), included the latest support provided on your link, for users stuck in reboot loops.
Since I've done the latter, I get a pop up when opening Drive, but I don't see the "allow" button in the security settings (just like before going into reduced security mode). I only see it if I uninstall and reinstall all. But if I do that, I'm back to square one and into the reboot loop.
Also, I've noticed that when I do get the "allow" button and reboot, I have a first "half way through" boot (loading bar does NOT go all the way) and a second one that seems normal. Not sure how this is useful but at least this post in now explicit.
I'm up to date on chrome and running on an m1 11.2.3.

Any support would be super appreciated. I'm not a dev, I can only handle simple geek stuff ;)

Tons of thanks to whoever will help me FINALLY have drive desktop running. I'm loosing soooo much time everyday using the online drive.

Cheers!

I didn’t do any reinstallation, mine automatically updated to v47 and keep popping up the allow the security settings. After a few times of security setting loop, I tried the troubleshooting in the link and it works properly now.

I got headache yesterday trying this and somehow did not want to work.

I settled with using the app called Mountain Duck - which apart from silly name - has the best functions of all cloud sync apps, supports all big cloud providers - and it works in 2 min. On mapping Google Drive - it even gives access to shared files and folders...

I did try a software called O drive too, but Mountain duck is better. But I have a problem with mountain duck, it keeps saving different versions of my working file(psd), it said it can’t save the original file and saved a backup version. There are like 3-4 backup files everytime I open a file directly from mountain duck.

I have to cross check the files and delete the duplicates every time and that’s annoys me, then I switched back to google drive.

Thanks. I am still in disbelief that Google made it this hard to install.
I still dont understand this need for the extensions - they could just map it and make it easy.
For the first time - I am actually considering switching to iCloud.

Yes, I got stuck in a warning loop also. So full removed v46 and all extensions. Installed v47... I have had a problem with application hang ups that seem to be file access related that occurred using v46 AND v47. Have since removed and reverted back to Backup & Sync app... Now things stable again. I now use https://cloudmounter.net/ which works well. Very disappointed with Google over this.

It’s good to know there are many google drive alternatives that works with the m1.

But still, hoping google could fix this issue soon.

Indeed - there is tons of options but they are all ridiculously priced.
You cant get one of them below 35 USD.....

I had the same idea after giving up on getting Google Drive to work on my new M1 MBA. But the upload speed was so horrific I had to abandon that idea after a few hours. It is basically unable to upload my 250GB of work file in any sort of reasonable timeframe.

Instead I took out a Dropbox Plus account and all my files were uploaded in a day. And Dropbox is working perfectly fine on my MBA.

What are you talking about? Dropbox, iCloud, Microsoft 365 with OneDrive, pCloud, IceWarp etc. don't cost $35 a month. You can get 2TB of storage from most providers for around $10 a month. Personally I recommend Dropbox as it has worked great for me on both Windows and macOS.

I use Workspace for my work email, so it would be convenient if Google could hurry up and update Google Drive for Apple Silicon. Otherwise I'll just downgrade my Standard account to a Starter one and stick with Dropbox for my cloud storage.

I meant different desktop clients for google drive. Due to my company’s limitations, I could only use google drive. So it makes me no choice...

I think they're just testing the implementation since 46.0, because there's no way the final version launches with the current requirements (especially rebooting into recovery mode for a permission).

If I recall correctly, users were using this method back in November too; seems like Workspaces teams just formalized it and made it more stable.
Unfortunately, since they still haven't progressed beyond that stage, chances are this will be the only working method for a while. Not a fan...

It's also irritating considering that Dropbox and OneDrive have been working swimmingly since the M1 launch.
CyberDuck, CloundMounter, and ODrive (preferred and closest to the old File Steam by far — spotlight indexing!) were decent workarounds for me, but I've settled on micromanaging (Drive) Backup and Sync for the moment.

I was unclear.
Point of my rant is not a price of the storage.
I am in disbelief that both Google Drive and OneDrive apps are still far from working optimaly on M1 Macs - and while there are 3rd party apps, the prices of those apps are still ridiculously high, and many of them ask for subscription model.
I never used iCloud - but I am close to start, as price of storage is compatible to the others, and I dont have to pay for the iCloud app per se.

How did you remove the extensions? I keep getting extension warnings every time I boot, and drive never works. I'd like to try reinstalling it.

You need to boot into recovery mode and take away the "Reduced Security and Allow user management of kernel extensions" that you set when installing it. Then you can remove it.

See: https://support.google.com/a/users/...p&visit_id=637547190747411629-4283899635&rd=1 (section on Troubleshooting)

If you have a problem with kernel extension approval restart loops, perform the following steps:
  1. From the Finder menu bar, select Go > Go to Folder…
  2. Type /Library/Extensions then click Go.
  3. In the Finder window that opens, delete the package called dfsfuse.kext. Enter your administrator password if requested.
  4. Open Terminal.
  5. Run the following command:
    sudo kmutil clear-staging
  6. Shutdown the computer.
  7. Restart it in recovery mode by holding down the power button until Loading startup options appears.
  8. Click Options and then Continue.
  9. Click Utilities
    and then
    Terminal.
  10. Run kmutil trigger-panic-medic --volume-root /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD
Replace Macintosh\ HD with the name of your local drive if it’s not the same.
  11. Confirm that the output from this command indicates that kernel extensions have been removed.
  12. Proceed with Step 3, including rebooting.

Note: This will unload all third-party kernel extensions, not just the one for Google Drive. You will need to re-approve each of them as they are used.

I gave up and am doing a demo of Cloudmounter. It's working well so far but only a 14-day trial. I'm hoping there is a fix before the trial runs out. If not I will buy Cloudmounter.

Strongsync and Mountain Duck are my other two prefered options.
First one is M1 app, while the second one is half open-source (they have free version) and works very reliable...

I am liking Striongsync, but it too has its moments.

Why is Google taking so long to do this conversion? This is so typical of them with anything but search products— put it out there, get people invested in it, and then lose interest in it.

I have just find out that, every folder’s in google drive containing a “:” (e.g. 12:12:00) could not be shown in google drive desktop m1. It won’t happen in my intel Mac….

After I’ve changed the folder name by removing all “:” in google drive web version, it will then show up in my m1 Mac again.

Thank you!

I've also just found that any folders that have a space (" ") at the end of their name in the web version don't sync. As soon as you change it the folder appears.

Yes, space in the end, colon and slash also won’t sync…. So annoying!

I have reported this issue to google and hope that they could fix this issue in the next build.
