What really impressed me was the voice translator. The Google glass is IMO light years ahead of the competition... Almost feels like the star trek era is here
Kudos to Google for its moonshot thinking. As Larry Page correctly pointed out..incremental improvements are less important than moonshot thinking with 10 or 100 time leaps

why would it be illegal it keeps the driver looking forward instead off the road to look at a standalone gps
Because of the other features. The same way if you were to get pulled over with your phone in hand they could give you a ticket. Anything other than GPS playing in front of the drivers view is illegal. Also, those damn DVD players that hang in the middle should be illegal. It is distracting if I am behind someone with sponge bob playing.
but wait you said the gps was illegal is it or is it not and can you back any of this up with a source saying you cant have this type of glasses on while driving.
this is hands on and eyes on display and does not take the drivers view off the road,if anything the laws would permit this and push this to keep people from looking off the road to there smartphones while driving
bmw has heads on display on the windshield and projects a bunch of stuff on the glass in front of you while you drive
I don't know whether it would be legal or not at this point. But, you want a source for the illegal comment someone made above when earlier in thread you said it's still in testing?
"Distracted driving" is the latest buzzword for the nanny-state regulation-lovers so this is going to only fill that void in their hearts even more.
The video I saw showed the results of the searches etc in the upper right hand corner of the glasses so that would take your eyes off the traffic just like looking down at a standalone GPS would.
I think the video showed the passenger in the car using them, not the driver but I could be mistaken.
Regardless, it's cool technology.

I didn't say GPS is illegal, I said this would be for a driver to use...and I almost promise you it will be. It has the same features as a cell phone...texting, email, watching video. If anything it would be more distracting than a stand alone GPS.

agreed. If it was an add on to glasses it may sell better, but until we are wearing unitards and flying in space I do not see it being widely adopted.
The price is the biggest obstacle I think. I don't intend to buy one for $1500 though.

I wouldn't even see $599 selling that great b.c the way they look. People want something they can use everyday in a professional setting. At least to me it seems like an everyday device to replace a phone.
yeah but these are basically phones with hardware and lte modems and gps etc so im sure carriers will subsidize them with data plans.
I could be wrong tho and these hook up to a android phone and get the gps from there but no real details about the hardware has been leaked.With the 1500 price that's floating around means these are prolly quad core android glasses with full modem and data connectivity
Wearing this and driving would not be illegal. If it was they would have to make heads-up displays illegal (like in the Corvette) or Infrared night vision HUD (like in some Cadillacs). I imagine there would be a driving mode as well, so only Google Voice and GPS would function.
As for this tech, there is no rush. This will take time to get perfect. And its not like anyone else has anything like it. in fact, there is no other company that can to this level and amount of info displayed.

When the car is in motion if anything other than GPS or still images is on screen it is technically breaking the law. For example, if you were to get pulled over and the matrix was playing that would be illegal.
This is the first ive seen of Google glass or even heard of it. If Google said it was $1500 then Apple would charge $2500. Doubt it will cost that much though but who knows.
$1500 is for a very early preview version. I'm pretty sure a retail version would be much more affordable, especially if subsidized by a data plan.
This is not correct. Each State has different laws, but no law specifically covers a personal HUD over one eye. The cars I mentioned have HUDs that display different bits of info on the windscreen, which is not illegal. But Glass also seems to fall under cell phone use, albeit more like a BT earpiece, which is legal to use while driving.
The issue is, will it be a distraction like a movie playing on your stereo is? If so, then I agree it would be illegal. Looks like news laws are gonna have to be written for this new wearable tech.
