Yeah, thought that was funny. I guess maybe potential project(s) for each letter, then...?

: shrug :
I'm sure it's not rigid. I'm sure it's somewhat freeform. I think the idea to strengthen Google's core brands under the Google banner and diversify the rest of the company into newer brands.

I doubt it. There ae a lot of companies with Alphabet in their name. Unless BMW can prove that Google's products compete with theirs, and that people would be confused, they have no case. And I doubt people are going to be thinking about going to BMW for what Google provides.

What happens when they both start making driver less cars?! ;)

Yeah must admit I thought it was a spoof too .... but nope - they're calling themselves Alphabet ? I mean all their money and the best new name they could pick was Alphabet ?? Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at the creative board on that one..

Creative board / focus meeting.

"So like we have to change our name. We want something dynamic and visionary. Suggestions?"

"Does it have to be a real world or use real letters?"

"Yes - something from the Alphabet would be better than €#$%@$#!"

"So how about Alphabet?"

"Genius ...."
I guess, alpha and beta? Combined to form alphabet?

Just a move that a single big company will do when they grow into many different directions. It makes me think of what car manufacturers do. i.e. Toyota >Lexus>Subaru etc.
