This is more a rant at CarPlay, but it does not work in gMaps either.

Why in the world can you not pinch to zoom in and out? Shockingly, my stock Navi does it. Why in the world does company that mainstreamed pinch to zoom not have that capability on CarPlay?!

Ummm...it does for Apple Maps...I do it all the time.

I downloaded the updated googlemaps yesterday afternoon and gave it a quick try on the way home from what I have seen so far I like it will do more testing over the next few days. I love Carplay so far no more having to have my phone in a holder stuck to the window.

I don't recall being able to pinch zoom either. I'll have to try it tomorrow

I still can't understand people who have CarPlay (or Android Auto) and mount their phones. To each their own...

I don’t mind the satellite view in Google Maps but other than that I’ve no reason to move away from Apple maps. Works fine where I’ve used it including a 2500 mile trip to France and back including popping through Belgium and Luxembourg.

I use my calendar a lot adding location info to entries so using Apple maps means when I start it up it generally offers the location I need without me having to mess about adding it before I leave. Enough of a reason for me to stick with Apple maps.

No worries, it just shocks me. I wonder if Apple believes it to be a safety issue and has it disabled.

Unlikely, as you can pinch & zoom all you want on an iPhone itself while driving and do search, etc., when even Waze starts barking at you and asking to confirm you are a passenger.

I guess it is more likely Apple’s desire for an absolute perfection with a product that got a lot of (deserved) criticism in the past. So if they cannot (apparently) make sure it pinches & zooms well on every compatible car panel, they just disable it “for a more polished user experience”, lol.

iOS 12 Maps (used in France, mostly) have improved somewhat with a much better live traffic info and alternative route suggestions where possible. The biggest remaining problem for me is the road layout inaccuracies (e.g. actual roundabouts missing with Maps showing a straight road ahead), where Waze and Co show it correctly.

I used Google Maps yesterday and was throughly underwhelmed. The voice levels are too high and it sounds shouty and robotic. You can’t just see the overview of your route (I use that daily for my commute to see upcoming delays); you can see an overview but it automatically goes into turn-by-turn directions when you move.

I really don’t know quite what I expected, but it was definitely more than this.

I’m looking forward to trying Waze, although I haven’t really used it before, and I’m ultimately waiting for Tom Tom to come to CarPlay.

I also assume there is no way to stop Google from knowing everywhere you've gone and every route you took when you use Google maps.

So far, Waze with Apple CarPlay has been quite buggy. The overlay is slightly off centre meaning you can't see the route properly and the travelling icon lags behind the car, as well as being a bit jittery. Hopefully they'll sort it though!

Installed it to try it in the car. Uninstalled it again at the end of the journey. Horrible. On the odd occasion, ever less frequent, I need to use Google for a POI I’ll anonymize the search from DuckDuckGo using !g

I'm not normally a Google maps user - try and stay away from Google apps. But today I tried it in the car as I drove a bunch of errands. I don't like it at all - it is pretty but much more difficult to see streets and use. Also it showed NO POI's other than gas stations - didn't show any stores or the Mall area or landmarks etc. Maybe there is some setting I need to do on my phone to turn on POI but I didn't find anything on CarPlay.
Also there seems to be no integration with other Apple apps such as if I have an appointment on my calendar Apple Maps offers to show me directions - nothing from Google.
Again, I'm not a Google maps expert so maybe I need to change some setting but it was pretty (especially in satellite view )but I need functionality and not beauty so I don't expect to use it regularly

Not showing your appointments is not unheard of. If you had it in Google Calendar, they would be there. I have even thought about finding ways to have my iCloud sync to gCalendar to have that capabilities. But Google has enough information on me and continues to scan my emails...so, how about no.

With regards to the POI, I am unaware of anything that would make that setting change. Have not browsed through the gMaps settings since the CarPlay update to see if there is anything. I also do not like how it is either trailing (like a drone) or North heading. I would prefer it as an aerial following me. But oh well, maybe over time.
