For me it just intermittently works and doesn't work without any adjustment. Yesterday didn't work for 30 minutes, but then worked for the rest of the day.

Following solved the problem for me on iOS 7.1 and iOS 8.1:

Activate "Settings / Privacy / Location Services / System Services / Compass Calibration"

Yup, seems like that was covered earlier.

Thank you so much! This was the solution for me. I already went nuts because of the missing heading arrow.

Click the compass in the upper right hand corner of the map.

That will toggle it from always showing due north, or showing the direction of your vehicle.

If that doesn't work, ensure location services are permitted for the app in settings.
Simple answer. Worked perfectly. Unlike the rest of the people answering this question in this thread, You obviously know what you are talking about. Keep up the good work

When driving I usualy have my iPhone on with Google Maps open even if I am not using it to show directions to go from point A to point B. While driving the app shows a blue dot (my iPhone location) and as the car moves the dot moves but NOT in the direction the car is moving. If am heading south and making a right turn to head west, with the orientation pointing North, makes it look like am turning left. BTW, pressing the small arrow on the botton left of the screen does not change the orientation of the map.

Hope you got your prob solved..going through same prob.. any help..

If clicking on the compass icon isn't working and your map stays with North up top you'll have to go into the settings within Google maps.

Click the 3 lines at the top left to open the menu and then click settings at the bottom, scroll down to "navigation settings" and then underneath "map display" you will find a toggle option that reads "keep map north"

If nobody's answers have solved your problem in this thread I believe that mine might work.
