I use it. It allows me to sync my iPhone contacts with my gmail contacts, and my iPhone calendar with my Google calendar. I have had no trouble with it - everything syncs quickly and reliably. The best part is that it's free.
I tried it... found it too cumbersome... went with mobile me.

Ive tried it, but ive got X2 contacts of everyone now for some reason?
I love MobileMe, you get the server space that Google doesn't offer. But I do sync my work calendar on Google Calendar. I have that on my iPhone, my Macbook, and my Dell laptop. Works like a champ.

I tried mobileme for 6 months when it first came out, it was awful. Apple need to provide me with a very good reason why I'd pay them £60 a year.

Yep, works great. I will admit, getting your contacts entered correctly into google contacts is a chore, but once it's done it's genius.

Me too. I gave MobileMe a shot with their trial and there just wasn't enough benefit for me to justify shelling out $100 a year when Google provides the same stuff for free.
Upgrading from the 3G to the 3GS was a breeze thanks to Google Sync:
I upgraded my 3G to the new 3GS yesterday after work. As soon as I got home I plugged the new phone into the computer. After a 2 minute restore from iTunes my Google account info was synced to the new phone. Within seconds after that I had all my contacts and calendars back up and running on the new phone. It was completely seamless.
Google sync is great for google calendar, but sucky for contacts. If you go to m.google.com/sync in your iPhone, you can configure which calendars to use -- very nice. Unfortunately, google sync doesn't support contacts well: you basically have a single "all contacts" group, and there doesn't currently seem to be any support for contact groups. On the minus side, google contacts is, IMO, almost fascist in its insistence that a given email address can only exist on one contact; you can't have multiple contacts with the same email address. This can be a real pain when trying to move existing contacts to google.
MobileMe is decent for contacts, but sucky for calendars. Multiple contact groups are supported, but the calendar features leave a bit to be desired. For example, the web interface appears to be significantly slower than google calendar, and support for repeating appointments is very primitive (try entering something that repeats every 2 days, every 2 weeks, or every third Friday of the month -- you can't, although the iPhone is happy to support it via google calendar). A slightly redeeming feature is that MobileMe will synchronize contacts (and multiple contact groups) to Outlook.

I tried it out and i have to say it was a bit cumbersome to set up mostly due to Microsoft ActiveSync restrictions...all your contact numbers have to be Home or Mobile and nothing else and there's no support for labelling addresses 'address' as far as i can tell, it has to be home or work. Also no support for syncing contact photos in Apple's address book
Once you meet that restricted format it works well and its free.
However, i just backed up my calender and contacts to google for that just in case scenario but still rely on local syncing

I use it too and it was easy to set up, free and it works. The only thing I would caution you about is that it will erase all of your contacts and calendar information if you have any on the phone when you do the setup. I am on a PC and don't have other great mac programs so this works great for and me and you can't beat the price.

When you connect your phone in iTunes, click on your phone, and it's under the Information tab. That is if you followed the directions that Google gives you, otherwise this shouldn't be happening, really.
I tried it but found some issues with contacts that had multiple phone numbers. Not all the numbers synced. Other than that, free is good. But I too chose MobileMe. That is not without ITS own little quirks, but I like push email....
Go to settings>mail, contacts & calender and either turn of the functionality or delete the account altogether

Agreed... Though I have both, MobileMe and Google Sync. Right now I am only using my MobileMe until it expires in January. It is not feasible to pay all that money for the ONE feature that I would need it for; that being Find My iPhone.
It's nice that MobileMe also syncs everything to your Mac, however if you are indeed a Mac user and want to sync Google contacts and calendar there is a program called Spanning Sync which does have a cost of $65 (after a 15 day trial)... ONE TIME as opposed to the yearly MobileMe...

You probably merged your contacts instead of replacing, and that's why you have 2x everything now. Merge is a great option if you've been keeping separate contact lists, but if you were previously syncing with a usb cable you'd want to replace.
It's more cumbersome because I want everything to sync to my mac, also. And that requires lots of extra steps.
Also, I hate google's contact implementation. There are lots of little quirks, but most frustrating is that everyone I email becomes a contact. Why would I want that??
But google doesn't provide the same stuff. No push email, no idisk, no find my iphone or remote wipe.
Find my iphone and remote wipe are what finally pushed me to mobile me, but yes, I can see how if that's ALL you use, it might not be worth it (on the other hand, if you use the feature even once it's paid for itself for several years).
I will say, mobile me is far from perfect. Its main downfall is the horrible slowness of the web interface (at times). I actually still use gmail as my primary personal email because it's just so much faster on the web. Also, I don't get why mobile me can't deal with the "birthdays" calender (tho that's an easy work around).
I've been using Nuevasync for a while now and found no reason to change to Google Sync.
