Just in case anyone is interested, GV Connect is in the app store now and GV Mobile+ is expected tomorrow according to the developer. I can finally stop using the buggy GV Mobile from Cydia. :D

I'll be snatching them all up as soon as they're out. Not letting these slip.

Which one? Both. I'll probably just get the GV Mobile+. I'll bet we will see a lot more now, maybe even one from Google

GV Mobile+ will be free for the first week or two, then it will go up to $2.99
Nope, it's $2.99 right out-of-the-gate (but I bought it anyway):

Will there be an app like we can get on our desk tops that is similar to skype?

I have a skype subscription where I can make and receive unlimited USA calls.

GV has this but can only access it on my desk top.

You make no sense.

Hmmmmm yeah, NO! That didn't happen.

9to5mac's original article said that it would be free for the first 12hrs (http://www.9to5mac.com/26340/google-voice-gv-mobile-app-submitted-to-app-store), but today they posted a new article that says that the app will be free, sometime next week for a brief period of time
Sean Kovac’s “GV Mobile +” – arguably the best non-official Google Voice app – has just hit the App Store. For the first week it’s on sale for $2.99 but there will be one free night. Kovacs will announce when that night occurs and we’ll be sure to post on that when the time comes.

I think he/she is referring to Skype being a stand-alone application and to use Google Voice you must be logged in to your gmail account from a browser.

both on a desktop, but he/she would like a stand-alone Google Voice application

I'm guessing, unlike the browser version, these can initiate calls. Does anyone know if you were to use this on an iPod touch if it would actually make the call or would it just initiate the call on my cell phone like it does now on the desktop version?

Yes sort of.

When I go to my gmail account on
my desk top and can access 'call phone' and can make free USA calls and also receive.

When I go to my gmail account on my iPhone can't access that option.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a stand alone but would be nice but to be able to access 'call phone' on my iPhone would be satisfactory for now.

Marc

Hmm, nice way to p*ss off your early adopters.

Oh, well. If google resurrects their GV app, it'll likely be free, which will kill Sean's.

+ 1 + 1 = 2, agree on both points.

Hope this gets added by google officially.

Maybe, but why? You still need an internet connection for both, and the HTML5 GV webapp is pretty good.

Maybe he's asking for a VOIP app that calls out from the iPhone, using the GV-like interface, just like you can from a desktop browser? If so, I imagine that the protocols/API are probably undocumented (for now?), and so any such app would probably have to come from google.

(It would be interesting to know if google's GV app developer(s) are still working for google and, if so, if they are available to again work on the google app ...)

It's a bit of a pain, but you can use the iPhone to tell GV to call your iPhone and connect you to another number. It is free for calls within the US.

My guess is that, if a google app is released, it'll be after the end of year, when they'll start charging for calls.

I just re-read his post, and I do think he means VoIP.

Yes sorry by not being more specific.

I just tried google voice. It dials an access number first which means you are using AT&T minutes.

I use skype alot to make USA calls. I have an unlimited USA skype subscription that costs $15/year and can make and receive over 3G and wifi.

Marc

does anybody know a possible way to call strictly from google voice?

im in germany now and already have a GV number, and the "make a call" feature in GMail works great, but the voice.google.com makes me call my home in america first.

is there a way to make calls like from GMail but on the iPhone?

mpossoff, are you talking about this

I can access that but I'm referring to something different. What that does is dial an access number which means it uses AT&T minute usage.

I'm referring to what can be accessed via gmail 'call phone' where one can make free unlimited USA calls and receive.

+1 ... wondering the same thing.

how does one make calls strictly from google from the iphone, without using real talk minutes.

Why should we spend $2.99 on GV Mobile+ when the same revisions in Apple's App Store policies that allowed this once-banned app back into the store should also allow Google's official app (which was free before Apple banned it) back in as well?

I think I'll just wait to see if Google's free app is made available again.

It's easy to understand the confusion, as Google has done a poor job of marketing these products, but Google Voice is NOT the same thing, or in any way related to the Call Phones feature from Gmail. Google Voice currently must place a regular call to the Google servers before connecting your call, or call you back on a regular phone (say if dialing from an iPod Touch). It CANNOT make the call directly at this time.

That may well happen, but for people who want to use Google Voice now, $3 is a pittance to have a better interface to use it. With the animosity that is growing daily between Google and Apple, it could be months before Google releases a native app. Or they could decide to keep it for Android only.
