That may well happen, but for people who want to use Google Voice now, $3 is a pittance to have a better interface to use it. With the animosity that is growing daily between Google and Apple, it could be months before Google releases a native app. Or they could decide to keep it for Android only.

Skype works pretty good on my iPhone. The only thing I don't like about skype via iPhone is that skype puts a heavy drain on the battery.

Yeah, Skype works great for me too, but I use Google Voice for other purposes - primarily for free voicemail to email and transcription.

I really want to use Google Voice on my iPhone, but for now Skype will do. I too have the problems with the Skype app affecting battery life, but at least it can make phone calls directly. Hopefully Google's official GV app will be approved soon, and it will be able to place direct calls, too.

Yes skype is a total battery killer.

Do any of these google voice apps use data instead of minutes? If they use minutes, there's not much point of using it to dial numbers since you could use at&t minutes for domestic and skype minutes for international.

Someone please educate me a bit.

I'm in the "google wants to control my mind" "tin-foil hat" club when it comes to the big G.

I created a gmail account after reading about the free google voice calling inside its mail client. I've read their privacy policy and know what they are collecting and why. I've only used it to call my phone a few times when I misplaced in my house.

I'd like to lower my minute plan on att and use something like GV or skype.

My questions: Should I remove the tin foil hat and just sell out to google? Should I jump on board with skype? What about MMS and SMS in regards to either of these services?

Thanks in advance.

-Google Voice uses your minutes, unless you make calls from the desktop browser, then its free. Skype is a VoIP, so it uses data, not minutes (so this option depends on your data plan cap).

-Google Voice and Skype both offer free SMS, but I don't think they provide MMS (I'm not 100% sure on that)

-It's time to remove the hat, but not because of just Google, just because.

Great info. The only benefit of GV, for me, would be transcribed voice-mail.

I've been on sprint for years and am one of the few who have no complaints. I've had as good of an experience one can have with a cell phone carrier after going through some hell with cingular and nextel many moons ago. I've had an iphone 1g I've been using for some home automation stuff and fell in love with the product and app store.

Hard to give up great service, cheap plans and unlimited data (especially when I believe we will see a CDMA iphone sometime in the next 2 years) but my wife's phone broke and I figured, what the hell.

Not sure why I'm sharing all that but there you go.

I have tin-foil hat spares if you're interested... ... ;)

More likely you'll see a Verizon compatible LTE phone before a CDMA phone. That way, Apple doesn't have to do anything, just wait it out until everybody adopts the same tech.

The only difference between the government and Google is that Google is pretty up front about collecting all of your data and using it for commercial gain (money from advertisers and marketers)

The government collects just as much data as google, but they collect it in the name of national security and use it against anyone they consider a problem. Unfortunately, if you're a problem to someone with deep enough pockets or connections, then they can often compel govt agencies to act.

You either have to live off the grid, or not upset anyone important if you want your collected data to avoid scrutiny (at least in this country).

Yes GV uses your cell minutes, the only way to avoid this is to add your GV # as one of your 5 numbers on your A list and then set your GV caller ID setting to "show my google voice #"

Gv mobile plus is a great app now with the new update working great on my iPad too. So much faster than googles web interface. Great app wish I would have got it for free but worth it for 3 bucks
