Apparently you didn't read the posts.

You have to request to use the service on Google Voice dot com.

Then Google will have to allow you. I have had my request in for a week or so.

Edit: Got my approval in just under a week. All set up with GV Mobile.

Got this from another site

A couple key things worth noting for those that have not ever used Google Voice:

- Voice calls DO count against your carrier minutes
- Outgoing text messages are free, but if you don’t turn off the setting to forward SMS messages to your regular cell number (Settings->Phones->Edit->Uncheck “Receive SMS on this phone”), incoming text messages will count against your plan since they are forwarded to the stock Messages app by Google Voice. The downside to doing this is you will have no way of knowing you received a text since neither Google Voice nor GV Mobile make use of Push. With SMS forwarding off, you have to manually check for messages using GV Mobile or the GV web app. However, you can use Growl in combination with Prowl to take care of this, and send you Push notifications when a text is received. Works great. Highly recommended.

Just thought it important to point out the subtleties of these features, especially the (partially) free SMS, since most articles you read fail to mention it’s not completely free (incoming and outgoing).

Just to clarify…

With SMS forwarding off and Growl + Prowl setup properly, you do get 100% completely free texting (incoming and outgoing) with Push notifications. Goodbye texting plan!

If you have this app with and active google voice and a sipphone you can make unlimited free phone calls on top of all those other features. I'd say that is why this is a big deal to apple and us.

i got it working with GV, gizmo5, and the siphon app from cydia. in wifi area, it does let me make calls thats shows my google number as the caller id. however, i looked at gizmo's site and it said free calls thru GV is limited to 20 minutes. still sweet. however, i can't get it to work over 3G even though siphon supposedly works over 3G.

I believe Gizmo hascompletely free in coming calls which is why it works perfectly with GV being that Google voice has to call your Gizmo number to initiate and out going call.

And is no one really concerned with a privacy issue with an unofficial app having full access to your gmail????

I understand why one might want the call forwarding, but why would anyone want GV Mobile when the iPhone can already handle most of these features with its built in software?

I'm sure everyone will find different uses for it.. but here is what's most useful for ME.

- I have a child in grade school, summer camp, etc. I can give out my Google Voice number (a single number). Regardless if I'm at work, at home, in my car (onstar phone #) or on my iPhone, this single GV number can ring all my phones when called. The school/camp will ALWAYS be able to reach me.. not having to dial multiple numbers.

-I can setup groups (i.e. family, friends, high priority) and choose how my calls come in when someone from those groups call (which intergrates with my iPhone/Google contacts). I can set it up to bypass the call screening for any of those groups or to only ring certain phones, during specific times.. say after 9pm, send a call from the family group straight to Voicemail or if a call comes in from my "family" group ring my phones. Very customizable.

- I setup a "business" group. Anyone who calls that is a member of that group it only rings my cell phone and work phone, during 8am to 6pm M-F.. goes to voicemail any other time. :)

- Unknown callers. When a call comes in from an unknown caller or telemarketer, I can force them to the call screening where they have to say their name. So when I pick up the phone I can hear the name first and CHOOSE whether to accept the call or send it to voicemail. I also have the option of recording the call or listen in on the voicemail mesaages they leave.

- switching phones during a call. Sometimes I get a call on my home phone. I;m on my way out the door. With GV I can press a key and have that call automatically switched to my cell number without the caller even knowing and I can leave the house and continue the conversation.

- personalized greetings based on groups. I have a side business. I give clients my GV number and put them in my "clients" group. When they call, I can set a personalized PROFESSIONAL GREETING that they hear. Such as.. "You have reached the offices of ..... blah blah blah)" When a member of the friends group calls the same number they can hear a different greetings, such as "What's up homey.. holla at me later Im busy... blah blah". I can also do this for individuals contacts.

- FREE SMS messaging speaks for itself.

- Transcribe my voicemail. When a caller leavs a voice msg GV transcribes it, sends me a text and an email.

There are many many more features.. this is just a few ways I use it.

you need to request an invite from google at www.google.com/voice

GV Mobile didn't crash for me when I logged in, works like a charm on my 1st gen ipod touch. Now I can text for free with my ipod. I'm hoping the new ipod touch's that are coming out have the microphone and camera I heard about, then I could use GV to call people on my ipod touch without having to buy a microphone, that would be awesome.

Google Voice is awesome and I'm already using it a ton, invites are taking a while to come out now, I'm one of the lucky few who got an invite within a week.

Thank you very much for this thorough explanation. I was trying to think of uses for this app because i just got an invite today.

Do you have to uninstall the first version to install the GV Mobile + version?
They show up as 2 different listings when i search for GV mobile.
Also is GV Mobile + not free anymore? I see an option to purchase not an option to just install?

Thanks!

Unless the new version (Google Voice plus) does something the old version doesn't, I will keep the free version (old one does just what I need when I use it).

GV Mobile+ was never free. The first version will be free though.

Same here, i just got confused because some sites were claiming it was free (maybe it was free for a limited time when it came out?), so I wasn't sure i was looking at the correct app....

SMS works fine here. I am not seeing a difference from the other version.

My wouldn't work on the other verision either. I try to send one but no one receives it. And I never receive them though gv mobile...
