Google just enabled Google Voice with support for Gizmo5 (similar to skype). Now using this combo with Siphon (download from Cydia), you can enable free outgoing calls

Steps:
1) Login to your gizmo5 (www . gizmo5 . com) account page (create account if you dont have one)
2) enter your GV username and password
3) Go to your siphon on the iPhone and enter the following:
-Username: your 10+1 digit Gizmo5 number found on your Gizmo account page
-Password: enter your password
-Server: proxy01.sipphone.com
4) Login to Google Voice and add your Gizmo5 number and verify it - pick up the call when you receive it and enter the verification code

Once you have done the above steps, you can launch the Siphon app and start making outgoing calls - the users will see your Google Voice number as caller ID.

Now you can use Backgrounder to keep Siphon running (takes around 8MB of RAM) and also get Free incoming calls.

Just tried it and works like a charm. Only caveat was for incoming calls, you hear the ring when siphon is backgrounded but you need to launch siphon before you can answer the call. a small inconvinience. just add siphon to the dock and it should be just fine.

P.S. if you do not have Google Voice account, request an invite at google . com / voice

I enabled Edge/3G in the settings, but Siphone will not connect over 3G. I keep getting "service unavailable" and then "service timeout. Do I need to play around with the ports?

WiFi works perfectly. I am using AT&T btw.

Anyone get this to work with 3G?

Worked perfectly for me over 3G. there is an option in siphon settings that you need to enable under network settings (otherwise it only works on WiFi)

but like I said in my other post, I have done it yet I still cannot connect over 3G.

If you send a call over GSM does it count against your mins. I would assume not since it's Sip -> Sip

But then part of me wonders how it would be tracked by a telecom provider on their network.

Anyone know or have an idea?

I, like a poster above, am unable to make calls over 3G even with the toggle in the settings switched on. Does it require VoipOver3G installed as well? I'm going to try that as soon as Cydia is working again for me.

Not sure why 3G is not working but works well for me. I am not using VOIPover3G or 3GUnrestrictor.

i also can't connect while on 3G, but it works just fine in wifi...also, the calls are limited to 20 minutes...

not (completely) free

No. Because it is going through Google Voice, you don't have to pay for anything.

Unfortunately, the fineprint seems to indicate that Gizmo is charging for this service.

So if you setup the direct connection on the gizmo5 account, then make a call it will be free for the 1st 3 mins, then cost $0.02/min afterwards.

If you use the Google Voice page to place the call (via ringback) it's completely free.

Well, I just set up my account and linked my GV account to it on the Gizmo page and I've been making calls just fine. I never gave them credit card info either. It's part of their experiemental GV system. It's free calls up to 20 minutes long each. So it's pretty good.

Also, as far as connecting without wifi goes, the slider in Preferences had no effect for me but I just installed VoipOver3G and added com.googlecode.siphon to the .plist file and it works fine now. :D I just wish there was a good alternative to backgrounding the app.

Later I'm going to try having my SIP and Mobile number added to the ring list for GV and then when I get a call from my GV account, just hit ignore on the iPhone and then try to open up Siphon and answer there. Anyone try this yet?

You guys wanna make free calls? Do this.

* Download Skype on your jail broken iPhone
* Pay 2.25$ for 3G Unrestrictor
* Pay 2.95$ for Skype montly unlimited
* Unrestrict Skype, use you adress book to make calls using 3G,Wifi,Edge
* Enjoy :)

i can't get siphon to work on 3g, even after adding it to the list in 3G Unrestrictor. it always says "service unavailable" unless i'm on wifi.

gizmo + google voice is free, $3 monthly charge is not free...its cheap, but not free.

GV Mobile uses your AT&T (or whatever carrier you have) minutes. It makes calls over GSM and not IP

I set GV Mobile to call my Gizmo 747 number, answered Siphon, then it dialed out

how are you doing it?

Same here. I've got it successfully working on wifi and 3g using GV set up to call my gizmo. Now all I need to do is have my contacts sync with Google (maybe google sync???) and have some sort of sms push notification for GV, I'll be set... cancel my att text message plan (since who knows when mms will go live) AND go down to the smallest talk plan they have. Use left over monies to buy diapers for my newborn!

how's your sound quality when talking? I can hear people clearly, but I think there's some kind of delay maybe 2-3 secs.

I can't get txt from tmobile users. I think it's a google voice issue right now. I hope they can come up with some kind of alert for SMS. Alert thru email when I get a txt would be great for now
