How common is stalking with AirTags? There have been so many articles about AirTag stalking, but I never heard of a case of someone who was stalked using an AirTag.
As in all things, a few bad apples. I'm confident that these have been used for some stalking. Because of how they work, they could easily be used that way by anyone wanting to do so. And they are much cheaper than hiring "Eddie and the boys" to "follow 'em" and "stake out where they go at all hours."
A search of news stories will likely find some examples (
1,
2,
3, and that was with only the quickest, quick search). I've seen a few stories that have typically been one spouse tracking another and catching them in lies/cheating.
My guess is a tiny fraction of all trackers in use are used for stalking... like guns or poisons or bombs or knives: a tiny few are used for crime, much larger numbers are not.
Since there is little to no newsworthy stories about intended use, the odd uses get the press... and lead to "solutions" like this. Today in lunch prep, I used 3 sharp knives to prepare the meal. Nobody wrote a story. My use of knives won't make the news. Someone somewhere will stab someone else with one knife and it may make national news. Ban all knives everywhere because they hurting or killing people!!! Knives are no good!
A couple of weeks ago- as it is EVERY year- there were several stories of shark bites from around the world. Exterminate all sharks! Don't go in any water that may have sharks in it! We simply forget all the other days where there are no reported shark bites. Kill all sharks!
Plane crash. Ban all planes. They kill dozens to hundreds of people at a time. But we forget all the days there is no news about planes successfully arriving and all the passengers getting to their destinations just fine. Ban all planes!
