Here is my problem that I'm hoping everyone can help me with. I currently have verizon service which I love and a blackberry which is ok. I always wanted to get an iPhone but I didn't want to switch to ATT. I was given a free iphone 3G yesterday and now I'm wondering if its worth trying it out because I can go month to month on att. My main worries are they are coming out with a new iphone soon and it might be on verizon. So my questions are....
1) should I switch and use this iphone anyway knowing a new one is coming out soon and it might be on verizon.
2) should I sell it and wait?
3) just use it as an ipod with wifi

Any other ideas would be helpful as well.

Thanks.

I'm not going to do that but thanks. Just wanted to know if I should try it out on att or wait on verizon? I know verizon might get it in June this year or Jan next year so is it worth it?

thanks

There is no telling if or when Verizon will get the iPhone. I say try it out on at&t and see if you like it.

Thanks everyone.

It would just be very annoying if verizon got it and I wanted to switch back in June.. Big hassle

I'm in NYC so I am aware service is "ok" but I don't talk much. I text a lot and use it for email/apps.

ALSO, another question would be... Should I sell it and wait for new iphone in June or should I sell it and get 3GS. It was a 3G

thanks...

Easy answer here... suspend your Verizon account. I think you can do this.

Sign up month to month with AT&T after finding out from the coverage map what kind of service you can expect. If it shows good on the map, then this is an easy decision. SWITCH.

Now if they come out with a new iPhone for Verizon, you reactivate your account with them and cancel the AT&T account and sell the old iPhone on Ebay and earn enough to make your new iPHone free with subsidization. Surely you could get a couple hundred for the old iPhone.

Alternate scenario... No new iPhone for Verizon, well then... sign up with AT&T month to month anyway now using the free iPhone. Then when new iPHone comes out this summer, you sign the deal with AT&T allowing you the upgrade to the new iPHone with subsidization. You pay for that $200 with the money you make in selling off the current free on eBay. Surely again you could sell that for enough to pay for a new iPhone with contract.

Lastly, if for some reason the AT&T coverage ends up sucking in your area, then you simply go back to Verizon this summer and never look back. In any scenario, you have nothing to lose.

If I suspend my account and just go month to month on Att I cant bring my number over which is key. Or can I?

Most seem to think that a Verizon deal, if it EVER happens, isn't going to happen until LTE is complete in 2012.

Yes. Unlock it, and sell it on ebay or craigslist. You could/will get over 350 for it. You can then decided if/when a new iPhone comes out to switch to AT&T

Since the iPhone will never be going to verizon. I'd check how the 3ag coverage is in the areas you are usually in. If the coverage is good, I would honestly switch to AT&T definitely for the iPhone. I switched from verizon to AT&T just for the 3G a few weeks after the actual release date.
Also with AT&T you will have 30 days to makes decision if you don't like what you're experiencing then just cancel with AT&T.

I dont think the iphone will come to verizon after the revision.

Is there 3G service where you live?

Also you should consider waiting for the new iphone then switch to AT & T since you have a perfectly capable phone now and dont seem to be in a rush for a new one. Use the 3g now as an ipod then sell it a week or two before WWDC. Then get the iphone.

Thats what I would do.

Just go to ATT. It's all about whether it works for you or not. I personally love ATT, others swear it off. Just try it out and see what happens. If it doesn't work just return it. There's no universal answer.

Why are you so reluctant to unlock it? It is the perfect solution to get everything you want.

You get an iPhone now, keep the same number, stay with verizon, pay the same amount, have the freedom to swap between the BB and the iPhone whenever, and if a new iPhone comes out on verizon, you can upgrade to it and continue doing what you're doing now.

EDIT: muh badd CDMA... didn't know that.

A GSM phone won't work on a CDMA network. IOW, an iPhone can't be made to work on Verizon.

AT&T (and the iPhone) use GSM. Verizon is CDMA.

They are not compatible.

I have the exact same situation as NYU, except I have T-Mobile. The 3G I have has the 3.1.3 firmware and as far as I know by looking into the hacks section extensively, there is no way for me to unlock it, period.

Also, I thought that AT&T and Apple changed the rules which does not allow you to pay month to month with the iPhone. Basically, if I go into a AT&T store and try do this they will require I sign up for a 2-year contract. Am I completely wrong on this?
