Well I got a Rev. B mail order today (128G SSD model)...it's plagued w/the downward sloping horizontal lines. Rather than try to bring it to the Apple store and deal w/having to get a repair or convince them there is a problem, I've decided to simply return it. I'd really like to upgrade to the Rev B w/SSD, but don't want to play roulette hoping to get a model w/out lines.

Would the best bet be to go to an Apple store, pay a premium for buying there and just return it on the spot if there are lines?

From where did you buy it and what screen model did you get?

Thanks

I've already packed it up back up so I can't tell you the screen model, but based on the serial number it was made on the 4th week of 2009. Moving my head up and down produced a noticeable flicker and it seemed that "enlarging" the resolution to 800x600 made the lines more pronounced.

I'm either going to bite the bullet and pay at the Apple store or just wait it out, my Rev. A is treating me well enough.

I am so sorry this happened to you. That is a bummer when you anxiously awaiting something and it arrives and it's not what you hoped.

That said.

I would probably go to a Mac store and be clear about my intentions. That you want to purchase an MBA, but you will do an "in-store" inspection for lines.

They would probably let you open ONE.

I'm going to wait until my CC refund gets posted and then see if I still want to pay a premium to purchase from an Apple store rather than Amazon or somewhere and save the cost on taxes. I'm already going to be out $50 or so w/shipping and insurance.

It is nuts to pay a premium for a machine (basically any Apple) and have problems that not even crappy Dells I've received from work seem to suffer from.

I would NOT accept anything but perfection. You paid for a model that Apple sells to many without lines... so, go to the Apple Store and demand a replacement model new out of box on the spot. Don't accept them wanting to swap your display. Get a whole computer that is in perfect condition.

Lastly, if you bought on Amazon, I don't know if Apple will help you with a new swap??? But then just return it to Amazon and wait to get what you expect.

It wasn't worth the headache, given what so many people on here have experienced at the Apple stores. I'd rather just cut my losses at $50 or so on shipping and insurance rather than add additional headaches by taking the defective machine to multiple Apple stores and trying to convince some smug "genius" that there's a problem w/my display.

The problem I have is that I shouldn't have to pay full retail + taxes just to get a machine that works properly. I've been ordering products off Newegg, Amazon and others at a discount for years without issue. Between work and personal laptops I've probably owned 8 in the last 10 years with no issues at all.

A new SSD MBA can be had for around $2350 shipped from reputable online stores...why should I have to pay $2499+tax just to get one that works? I think this has left a bad taste in my mouth with Apple. I expect to pay a premium for Apple, but to pay a premium on top of that premium to ensure a non-defective model? No thanks.

If it helps, I have lines and you do get used to them. Not saying that makes it Ok, but just the MBA Rev.B has lots of other things to enjoy and the lines don't stop that.

But, I will upgrade to Rev.C if it is line free :D

That sucks that you got the lines. I refuse to mail order a rev B due to that issue. Really don't feel like playing the lottery when paying that much. If you go to a store just make it clear to the manager or whoever is selling it to you that you will open it right there and will demand a refund without the restocking fee if you get one with lines.

I took my recently purchased revB (second try) to the Apple store and the genius said that those are normal when he compared my screen to their MBA which they use for their appointments. They both looked exactly the same except one thing (their machine is revA :D). This proves my theory that even revA machines had lines but the lines vary.

At the end, it sucks, but we either live with it or reject it for the mean time.

Doh, you got another rev B with lines too? It's annoying this hasn't been fixed by now.

I got to see another refurb A recently. Both didn't have lines at all, so I've been lucky with them. I've seen some nasty ones at Best Buy though, so even the rev As are hit or miss.

The lines weren't anything I could get used to, they looked exactly like the ones on a display model I saw at Best Buy. At points on the screen they'd intersect and create these weird patterns that were highly visible on white backgrounds. I'll give it a few days and think about whether or not I want to pay a few hundred dollars extra to buy one at an Apple store.

I find it funny how Apple claim lines are a “characteristic” of the display, while at the same time selling machines without any lines. We are way past the time Apple should have publicly admitted the facts: this is a fault and seems to affect a decent number of machines.

Good on you for returning it. The more machines Apple get back, the more they are likely to admit and fix the problem.

I too found the lines (whilst subtle) very noticeable, distracting and quite frankly unacceptable.

Yea...it was a bummer because that 128G SSD drive was sweeeeet. Much nicer than the constantly noisy 80G in my rev A. But...a noisy HD I can live with, a horrible display that I have to work on while on the road is not something I can accept. I don't *need* a Rev B right now, so I think I'll wait it out awhile, see if Apple sorts this out.

The Apple store won't take it back unless I pay the 10% restocking fee. I am getting two more tomorrow (Friday the 13th) to test my luck on such day!

Well, one is coming from Amazon and the other from eBay, I do not know what my options would be regarding the one from eBay since there is NO way to return it, however, Amazon charges 15% restocking fee.

Now, these would make 4 revB machines, one returned and 3 on hand. I will only keep one and I will for sure might have to stick to one faulty one since the lines are there no matter what!!!

More than the lines, the light bleeding (leakage) is killing me since it is TOO much.

The genius was telling me "the lines are a characteristic of the LCDs and that is what the other MB(P)s have LED and that is why they do not have lines." This statement made me think that I was talking to a mechanic NOT a computer tech guy

I do not know what Apple is into, but they surely do not know how to pick their employees. Did they get them from CircuitCity?

I really feel for you man! I just got may apple care through for my revision b bought off ebay! With the Lines!
Their not noticeable most of the time, thats because I make great effort in trying to ignore them or just accept their because these are cheap low contrast displays! But I know I'm lying to myself! I just can't be bothered to have my air ripped in half and getting a new display when their is no guarantee yet, of getting the good display model!

Glad to see you guy's are still talking about it, hope we get some good displays coming though soon!

At least my new apple care covers me until 2012 LOL! By then this will feel like a 12" PowerBook...

Well I've now had to return TWO rev Bs to Apple - both 1.6 HDDs - both 9C90s.

The first (week 5 2009) had the dreaded lines. The second (week 6), as soon as I pressed the power button, gave out a series of weird muffled disk sounds ....phutt...phutt...phutt.... which repeated every 10 seconds and continuous even after startup. Great.

Typically, the second one had a better screen than the first, however the lines still faintly present along with some flicker at angles.

Still tempted to pony up for the 1.86 SSD as I'd read the 9C9A's in them seem to be less prone to lines, but hearing this above, I'm not so sure. Plus I'm irritated beyond belief that I'm having to consider a €500 spec jump just to try and luck out on a satisfactory machine.

Been buying Macs for over 10 years now and this is the first hardware issue I've ever had with Apple. That it's twice in the same model within a week says to me something's rotten in the state of the MBA assembly plant.

And another thing....I'm now seriously tempted to hang on with my current hardware until rev.C (summer?)

All very well Apple saying "within spec" and stonewalling what is clearly a major issue (let's not forget the Apple Sales guy who used the phrase 'hush money' to me), but some of us remember a couple of old G4 PB models which are now referred to by their infamous nicknames; e.g. the Firebook and the NarcolepticBook.

After cooling off over night, I've decided to basically wait it out until a Rev C is available or Apple acknowledges a problem. I'm not going to purchase another Rev B sight unseen as I'm not going to lose any more money on shipping costs, not to mention the headache and disappointment of spending $2200+ on something that is defective. I'll continue to use my Rev. A and keep an eye on the local Craigslist, but otherwise I'll wait it out.

Or you could pick up a HDD Rev.B like I did at an Apple Store- First one perfect screen...
Or you could start yet another thread on how bad the screens are. Microsoft employees (I'm beginning to suspect) start them almost daily here!

So instead of paying $2350 shipped, I should go pay $2499 + 10% tax just for the privilege of getting one that isn't broken? No thanks, I'll stick to computers that are not plagued with horrible screens (fun fact, go google "plagued" and look at the 3rd result). I've seen EEE PCs for $300 with better screens. I'm pretty new to Macs but I'm really amazed at how loyal people are and how ready they are to hand over cash to Apple without a second thought.

If Apple admits the problem or fixes it, I will happily purchase one online. Until then, I'll stick w/my Rev A, it gets the job done.

I feel your pain man. This is NOT good. The odd thing is I have six close friends/colleagues who have all let me use their rev B MBAs extensively to determine whether or not I was going to buy mine. I was an original MBA owner, but that experience was so poor, that it literally took a 180 degree change of Apple's component usage for me to go with the revised MBA. I really did not feel Apple was honest or fair in introducing the original MBA, but that is a different issue. BUT it did make me really uneasy about buying the rev B MBA. It made me uneasy about ever buying a Mac again.

Point being, we all DESERVE a perfect MBA. My six friends ALL have perfect displays. All six use the SSD and all six are amazingly fast (one is a 1.6 GHz). It was reading all of the changed components, plus seeing with my own eyes that the speed and overheating and problems were gone that made me want to buy the revised MBA, but the final component was the displays... the lines... were they on my friends/colleagues displays, NO. Not one of them had lines. Not faint lines. Not lines on white, black, red, blue, or solid green backgrounds. Not any colored lines. Not tiny lines. Not big lines. Not lines that could be seen from 2" 6" 8" 12" 16" 24" 36" 48" or even from across the room. Not lines seen from the keyboard. Not lines seen from above. Not lines seen from a right or left angle. Not lines seen by moving the display back and forth. There were NO LINES.

So, after all of that I bought my MBA. I could NOT be happier with it COMPARED to the original. That being said, the line issue is problematic when all of us MBA owners are using it as a gauge of whether or not we should even attempt to buy a rev B MBA. This is a HUGE problem. I have seen the lines. I know what they look like. They are very faint on some, and obvious at the same time when looking for them.

While for MOST rev B MBAs with lines, it takes the right elements to even see the lines. But when it is so widespread, how can we not look for them? When we are paying $2499 plus tax and software on top, how can we not expect perfection?

At the same time, LIFE IS TOO SHORT to wait for a revision C. The rev B MBA is too good to have to wait for a rev C just for this problem. If you can deal with it, buy from Apple store and keep opening until you get one that is RIGHT without lines. There are MANY of us, probably 95%+ that have no lines or extremely unnoticeable lines. So, the others should expect the same.

Why wait for a rev C, when life is so short? Putting up with a little trouble SUCKS and SHOULD NOT HAVE TO HAPPEN. However, it is happening, but as soon as you get a good one, the experience will be worth it.

When will a rev C MBA even come out? Sure we are hopeful the SL9600 CPU comes out next month, but that doesn't mean Apple will release next month or even the month after. Heck, I think it would be a big mistake, but Apple could use a different chip in the next MBA??? There are ultra low voltage alternatives from the current low voltage. However, the SL9400 is amazing to have a Penryn with SSF and 45 NM and 17V and 6 MB L2 cach is GREAT. A huge step up from the original MBA.

So, an MBA could come out as early as next month. It could be two months. It could be September though. Is it really worth waiting that long to just not have to deal with the hassle now? Life is too short.

Granted the rev C MBA should be amazing, but the rev B is available today and is perfectly capable of being most Mac users primary MAC! It may get better, but it is already so good, and that is why I think Apple may put off an update to the rev C. Sure we all want a 256 GB SSD, but tough to come by in 1.8 right now, I don't know if it exists... I have been looking and found NONE! Sure 4 GB RAM sounds great, but 2 GB RAM is enough and it is the faster RAM. Sure a "Silky Smooth" glass trackpad would be nicer, but the enlarged trackpad on the rev B is already really great. The graphics aren't going to get any nicer (as far as card goes) as the 9400m is incredible and low power using and cool running. And the SL9600 CPU is barely any faster than the 1.86 as current projections are for a 2 GHz with same other specs.

So, a rev C could be a LOONNNGGGG ways off. I don't wish that but I think it just based on all of the current components and the excellence of the rev B MBA.

BUT, you touched on something else, the rev B MBA COULD get a fix from Apple, and an acknowledgment that it has corrected the problem. The deal is, I think even though the lines are exclaimed as fact on these forums, I just don't know what the percentages are? Why is Apple able to come up with other laptop displays that have NO LINES? What is the issue? It's a much nicer display than the MB, so is the better viewing angle and such creating problems on a 13" display? I don't know much about technology compared to the external panel display types like TN and IPS and etc.

Surely based on all we hear and read here on MR, Apple has had a lot of returns of the rev B MBA for the line issue? When can we expect 100% shipping rev B MBAs without lines? WTF?

I feel bad for you. I really hope you can muster up the courage and patience to get yourself the right rev B MBA without lines. Sucks it couldn't happen on first attempt, but I THINK that two attempts nearly has to yield a lineless MBA or a near lineless MBA where you can only see lines via white background and at an angle NOT usually viewed during NORMAL use of an MBA. A lot of people find lines by pushing the display back all the way and looking from the keyboard, but that is NOT affecting NORMAL viewing.

Based on what I believe has to be good odds of a lineless MBA, two in a row SHOULD NOT happen UNLESS it is from the exact same source and the SOURCE is the problem. I am in Arizona, why do I see so many great MBAs here? Why when I go to the Genius bar to get a new iPhone do I talk to a genius that says his Apple store RARELY ever gets rev B MBAs with lines brought back. Could be BS, but I prefer to think there is something going wrong somewhere and this is NOT all MBAs.

I wish you the very best in your quest for the perfect MBA. I have one, and I know many others that have them too. It's something you should be guaranteed with the money you are shelling out.

Godspeed!

GO MBA!

It's simply not worth a $400+ premium to buy one at an Apple store, that's why. There is one poster on here who has had 4 Rev Bs all with lines. The one I received had the exact same pattern as the one at my local Best Buy...the odds in my opinion are pretty good of getting a bad display. They are all made in China, location has nothing to do with it.

Yes, life is short...but it's also too short to use a laptop with a horrible display. I have 4-6 year old Dell laptops in my closet that have been treated like garbage and they still have perfect displays. There is absolutely no way I could've used the display on my Rev B. My job and income are based on my computer. My Rev A works fine and I use it mainly when I travel. I don't NEED a Rev B. I've already lost $50 or so on shipping my first one, I'm not willing to roll the dice hoping another one is line free.

Paying a premium at an Apple store for a model with no lines is like paying a premium to buy a new car that doesn't have dents in it. What if a dealership said a new car is $30,000 or it'll be $35,000 if you want one that isn't dented and scratched? Same concept. I've never paid a premium to buy a computer that works as advertised, why start now? I don't mean to insult anyone, but Apple fans really seem to ignore common sense just to buy something with "Apple" stamped on it.

I'm happy for those out there with a Rev B that doesn't have lines. If the one I received would've been line free, I would've kept it. The SSD drive was great and the extra speed was nice. I have nothing against the MBA at all, the simple fact is I refuse to pay extra to get one that isn't faulty.
