Update on this:

I have a 2017 model with the same issue. The marks are apparent underneath BOTH speakers.

I've gone back and forth on it, but I decided I'm just gonna live with it. It's only noticeable in certain lighting conditions and I can't 'feel' any difference when running my fingers across it. However, it is disappointing that there's a 16 page thread on the internet about this issue, which is prevalent in the 2016 models, and Apple hasn't remedied this for the 2017 models. It must be part of a step in the anodization process as others have alluded to.

How did you get a 2017 model? Through Apple or you ended up buying one?

No I just bought one online when they released the other day. Just received it yesterday.

My "update on this" was to indicate that this is also prevalent in 2017 models

If you decide to keep it you should thoroughly document the issue with Apple in case something might be amiss with the anodizing. Naked aluminum can readily develop corrosion which can spread.

This is very disappointing QC as it is something that only requires decent eyesight and lighting to spot so it is a very easy flaw to be detected before shipping.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing-- I'll run by a store and document it should it worsen down the line.

HI Guys, I have the same issue in Germany. I called Apple and they seid they will have a look at what they can do. Its a Silver 15 inch model, the 4th and 5th signs of the Serial is T3. When was it build?

I don't want to change my macbook and get a new, also scratched one.
Are there any people who have an unscratched MBP 15 inch with TB? Im very sad about that, even if it is not that a big problem. But paying over 3000€ for a scratched mpb is not very satisfying

My 2017 space gray 15" MBP has no scratches or blemishes anywhere that I can find. Just looked it over again now to make sure.

But I think this are the first two letters of the serial number. does your serial number also starts with C0, PBG4 Dude ? :)

My serial number starts with C02, and is supposedly production week 21 (May).

I don't mind if the scratches are on the back, but next to the keyboard, a area where you constantly look at, is very very bad. if you think we paid so much money for this... BAD

I have received new Macbook pro 15 (2017) space gray with the same issue little mark under the right speaker... it's barely noticeable until you notice it! So i returned it to Apple for the replacement. I'm very upset that so expensive devices could have little scratches, loose touch-id buttons, keyboard issues....

If it was me, I would return it, because it would drive me nuts that a brand new >3K machined came scratched out of the box. That would piss me off every time I looked at it.

Here we go,my MacBook Pro 2015 had countless repairs and needed to be replaced after a faulty repair. I communicated with Apple I would be in Hong Kong for a specific amount of time and if it was possible to do the exchange there since I would not be coming back to Europe anytime soon.

Apple confirmed, hence I EXTENDED my holidays in Hong Kong, paid more money for hotel and food, only to receive a notice from Apple they can not deliver on time. THANKS!!!

I was told from Apple via Email I could exchange my MacBook until it is Vintage (giving me 7 years from the date of purchase to replace it).

Back in Europe, countless emails and proofing this story which I have in Email etc... I finally got the approved replacement.

FIRST REPLACEMENT WITH GRAPHICS CARD UPGRADE





I was happy unboxing until I saw these scratches on the back ((((((

Answer from Apple "i should have taken off the protection, the device was NOT faulty. SERIOUSLY?

Anyhow they said we send u a new one.

SECOND REPLACEMENT -> JUDGE YOURSELF.







Answer from Apple: We have to investigate this as this is usually not covered by warranty!

Can you guys help me with ur case numbers or apple employees that helped exchange? My first Apple technician is on holiday and Apple is really giving me *****. They need a week to decide etc.... I have been dealing with this crap for 2 months now.

I even paid an upgrade of 120 euros for better graphics for this replacement.

Im so angry at Apple. No more money for them, if this doenst go well.

Sucks. I’d be tempted to escalate the crap out of that issue. Maybe even by sending an email to Tim Cook about it.

On a more serious note ... The picture of Humpty Dunphy sitting down on an arrow answers some lingering childhood questions I had about him sitting on a wall to begin with ... but then opens up a whole new set of questions.

You can't be serious. You actually replace an entire MBP 7 times for minor nicks? To each his own I guess, but my time is too valuable to deal with that stuff. I mean, you are sans MBP for several days every time, right? Do you have a backup laptop? And what about the time it takes to reinstall etc?

I would. I didn’t spend thirty-four hundred dollars for a computer that isn’t perfect. The scratch/indent/notch is a symptom of failed manufacturing. It shouldn’t be there and who knows what other damage could have been caused by whatever failure caused the blemish.

I spent the first half hour after unboxing my new MBP inspecting it closely for any imperfections. If I had found any, I would have boxed it up and brought it back to the store right then.

Would you buy a brand new car with a scratch in it? After all, it’s gonna get scratched, right?

That scratch out of the box implies carelessness in manufacturing.
